I have been on board with cloning since a wise old bird showed me what it was all about almost 30 years ago. Cloning can be both easy as pie, or hard as hell, since several factors are involved and any of them going awry can lead to failure.
I am certain that the environment the clones are in has lots to do with how they respond, but I also am 100% positive that a plant's overall 'clonability' is mostly strain dependent.
I have had strains that just will not clone well, no matter what I do. I have also had strains that clone if you simply place them in dirt...or perlite, or water...it don't matter it will root. And as dependent on stain for the ability to produce root, the speed at which roots appear is also strain related, IMHO.
I have had several keepers that I ended up culling because they just wouldn't clone well, or fast. I feel that the clonability of a plant is one of the most important things to consider when choosing a keepsake.
All that said...
I have found a plant that clones like a mofo! Besides that aspect, the smoke is at current my favorite. So I'm a pleased pup.
MOC Carnival is the strain, an I am liking the hell out of it. (strain whores and addicted searchers you need to stop passing over this one)
Anywho, I wanted to do an additional safety clone of one of my keeper carns, since I am getting ready to flower out the mom.
I rarely will even look at my clones for about 7 days or so as a rule, but I was curious about this one due to being anxious with other things going on.
I took a peek at the bottom of the cup just 62 hours after placing this clone in straight FFOF, and there was a root hanging out about 1 inch long. I know it was from nothing else since the soil came right out of the bag to the cup.
I pulled on the root a bit just to make sure what I saw was what I saw, and it snapped off...but I see another one peeking it's naughty little head out.
I did nothing but prepare the clone, make a hole, and plug it into the dirt.
It wilted a bit at first like they will, and I supported it with a wire wrap.
But right away (just a few hours later) the clone pulled itself up off the support and all leaves looked vigorous. Nothing has wilted or yellowed at all..hell it hasn't had time.
Just for the record, I sketched my method to prepare clones.
I skin a node like a sting bean. Cut the stalk at a steep angle, dust with clone stuff, and plug it to the node above.
I never mist, cover, or do anything different with clones than the rest of the veg/mom cab sees.
This one was a record for me (at least I think it is).
Whats your fastest roots?
