Help with first grow

Help. My plants are browning and I can't fiure out why. Currently I'm growing in a soilless mix (Peat, Vermiculite, Perlite and Compost). I'm watering every few days as needed and spraying the leaves in between waterings. Cab temp is at 80* F and humidity is at 30%.

I'm growing under 4 CFL's at the moment and I've moved the plants about 12" away for fear that maybe I was burning them when I had them at 6".

Any ideas?

What's your cfl wattage? Not equivalent, but actual wattage.
80 is hotter than most plants should be under. Someone else will have to verify, but you should be around 75?
Are you giving nutrients. Are the leaves getting crispy or just browning. How old are your plants? veg or flower?
I never heard of anyone spraying leaves except with clones. Sounds like a fungus magnet.

With CFL's you should be able to pretty much touch the lights.

CFL's are each 23W. No nutes at all, just compost at the moment. Growing them from seeds. They are now 15 days old. Some are just browning, but 2 are crispy at the ends.

I'm assuming the airflow is ok. Currently have a 50 CFM fan running in a space about 5 cubic feet with enough intake holes to keep the fan from overworking too much.

need to see some pics man, 'browning' can be caused by many things and seeing the plants would allow the experts to see HOW they are browning and maybe then useful suggestions could be made.

...as a CFL grower myself though i can tell you for certain that having your bulbs 12 inchs from your plants is too far away unless you are using high-wattage bulbs, like 65watters and up (actual not equivalent).

personally, i stick with 23's and 26's as they can be found anywhere and they are cheap as hell, very cost effective. ...and they can be hung within a couple inchs of your canopy.

post up some pics man and maybe one of us can help you.

peace, SOG

you're welcome man and i hate to say this but in my opinion you'd be better off starting over as those look bad, and looking that bad while so young means that even if you are able to nurse them back to health, there is a good chance you will see adverse affects later in their lifecycle.

btw, as a guess i'd say you have been over-watering them.

...and don't be discouraged, get some more seeds and start again, EVERY failure is a learning experience if you let it be.

personally, when i first started out i popped 30 seeds and killed them all, ...so i popped 30 more, lol, ...of those 30, 5 survived and 4 were female and i continued to clone and harvest the best of those for almost 2 years!

then i spent some money and invested in some store-bought beans, ...the point is that it is better to learn your chops with free bagseed until you know enough to bring a seed to harvest.

anyway, on the plus side, NOW i can see your pics, lol.

and for real man, don't get discouraged, nothing worth doing is easy.

peace, and stay safe, SOG

Yea, I have to admit, at first I was overwatering them. But I figured I had crossed that hurdle with a few of them. The larger plant was actually fine up until yesterday when I transplanted them from the little cups I used to grow the seedlings.

Never doubted you knew what you were doing. Actually I ued some of your older threads as a start off point when I was building my set-up. So in that sense, thanks twice...lol.

I had already started to germ some new seeds yesterday. I guess on some level I knew these were done for, but I still had some hope I guess. Oh well, what are you gonna do, right? Guess I'l have to keep visiting my dealer for a little while longer...lol

don't worry man, as long as you keep at it it's only a matter of time and you'll get it.

and thanks for the props, i'm glad i was able to help.

and believe me man, even bagseed bud will taste way sweeter than whatever you're paying for now, there is just no bud as sweet as the one you grow for yourself!

before you know it you'll be putting all that cash back in your pocket, lol, ...so don't forget to save some of it for upgrades in lights and fans and such 'cause i promise you, growing weed is HIGHLY addictive! ...and very relaxing too, lol.

peace, and stay safe, SOG

Just by lookn at ur pics id say they were over watered!
And if u were sprayn with water(misting)and then putn
them under the lights,u could have burned them that way!!

The do look over watered. The containers you are using are very deep for such small cuttings, imo. You may want to reduce your pot starting size so that the substrate will more evenly dry out in between waterings, rather then always having moist substrate at the bottom of your container which may ultimately cause additional problems.

edit: looking back at your pictures, I just want to make sure that you properly rooted these cuttings prior. Have these been rooted properly?

These weren't cuttings I've been growing from seed (haven't even made it to the clone stage yet...lol). I started them in much smaller containers. Actually they were yogurt contaners I drilled some holes into for drainage.

the lights are also too close for seadlings. i have 6 plants on 4th node after the cotyleons 6 inches tall under 4 6500k 23w cfls that are over 6 inches away and they are doing great. when they are younger i have them at least a foot away until they get their first true leaves then a little closer. water your plants then let them dry out then water again its called pumping them. the roots look for more water and grow outwards but do not dry them out. youll get it dialed in eventually.

There is no practical reason you should be misting the plants. Do you have drain holes in the bottom on the pots? Plants that small will take a week or two use up all that water!

I would not waqter till pots are completely Dry then id mix silica mix and give them a good non regular fert feed (ie superthrive or silica blast). I would then assure airflow and temps are correct and literally baby them back to life you might turn half lights off till you fix solution
