Ok!
I'm VERY HAPPY to announce that I've finally discovered a superior seed starting mix!!! Here's the video showing how great this mix is!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8LtxXxnabU&hd=1
The comparison in the video is with 30% peat moss, 70% vermiculite. Extra air to the roots guys! Extra air!
I've used mostly Rockwool for my seedlings with mediocre, slow results. Jiffy Cubes were awful and promoted over watering and slow growth. Also so heavy that some seeds couldn't 'pierce' out of the top. Then I tried Pro Mix HP which outright burned my seedlings to death. Then the Miracle grow seed mix. Typical slow growth.
This mix is adapted from the vegetable growing community that is geared towards city tap water with chloramines at a ph of around 7. (Remember, most of the vegetable gardening community live in rural areas with well water, rain water, or RO treated water to their home. so you just can't go and do everything exactly as they do it.)
Here is the recipe:
30% Composted Cow Manure (you can use sheep, but cow preferred. Don't use worm castings)
30% Peat Moss
40% Perlite
-Mix ingredients together.
-Add treated water (see below) and mix again.
-You can optionally add Liquid Karma or other snake oil at this point.
-Put in containers and let sit for 2 weeks.
-Make sure soil is always somewhat moist.
-If a fuzz or mold grows on top than that's ok.
-Place seed about 1/2" down from top
-Lightly cover up.
-Keep top area wet at all times until seed pops.
-Seed will explode out with super rapid growth!
IMPORTANT:
De-Chlorinate ANY water that touches the soil using ClorAm-X (order online) or AmQuel. If you are on city tap water you have chloramines in it. Letting water evaporate for 24 hours is outdated grow lore and should not be followed.. Do NOT let chloramine's touch the soil!
