He used a lawyer and it cost him $300 but he really couldn't afford the offense because of insurance so it was money well spent for him.

I feel you on that.

$300 hurts for a bit, but raised insurance premiums will hurt more and for much longer...

Oh, and there's no way in hell I'd risk jail time over a traffic ticket.
