That was absolutely horrible and heart wrenching to watch.

What the fuck are these pigs trained for if they can't clear a fucking airway or perform a trac? I had to be certified to do that shit to pass the 11th grade!!

Disgusting. Cops, kids should have to watch how daddy was a do nothing coward who panicked while violating someones civil rights.......

Hope that pig chokes on his pork chop and all the pot heads at the restruant watch his fat ass gasp for air.

I am amazed at the knee-jerk cop hate on this site.

How in the hell is this the cops fault?

Guy starts shoving his female friend around the lot, cops get called. Man decides to swallow plastic and fight the cops. Man begins choking on the plastic bag he forced down his own throat, cops try to save him and call an ambulance. Unfortunately, the Heimlich maneuver is not always successful, and the man dies, choked to death by the plastic he tried to swallow.

The cops here actually acted very professionally, transitioning quickly from a confrontational mode to a rescue mode when they recognized what had happened.

Calling for cops to perform field surgery is ridiculous. They did what they could reasonably be expected to do.

The laws that inspired such fear that this man decided to take such drastic and life-threatening action should be hated and reviled, and fought at every opportunity.

The hate and anger towards the people that stepped forward and tried to stop this man from assaulting his female friend, and then tried to save the man from himself, is completely misdirected.

Wasn't he gay?

And I see your point, I do. But I think the point everyone is trying to make is that if there were no laws against the possession of marijuana, this man would not have felt so inclined to hide it from the police in such a way. People do not have the best coordination when they are scared out of their minds.

But like I said, I see your point. It's just unfortunate that this happened in this way.

I agree that police officers should know how to stop people from choking and be able to clear their airways and/or preform tracheotomies. If a policeman cannot be counted on to SAVE LIVES then what is his/her purpose as a policeman?

Eh, I should have written female friend, not girlfriend I guess. Thanks for pointing it out, edited.

First, they did try to stop him from choking. The Heimlich maneuver is not 100% effective. That's not the fault of the cops.

Second, there's no way to know a trach would help. That depends on where the obstruction is in the airway, and it is a procedure that is extremely dangerous. I seriously doubt a surgeon in that situation would have attempted a trach.

Besides, if anyone could reasonably be expected to perform a trach, why wouldn't it be the ambulance personnel? The medical professionals, the ones actually trained for emergency medical care?

If a doctor were there, would you be attacking him for not doing a trach? Of course not.

And if they had held this guy down, and sliced a hole in his throat, and he still died, the furor would be about 'the pigs sliced his throat'.

It's not reasonable, it's hate, and hate is never reasonable.

I blame the bag manufacturer. Clearly their fault for not childproofing/violent woman beater proofing drug baggies. I demand disclaimers on all bags which may be used to transport narcotics.

I guess you're right, his death is not entirely at the fault of the cops. But, I hope this event serves as a lesson for both marijuana users AND an even greater lesson for those deciding on what should be legal for human consumption. (No pun intended.)

I think it more highlights that idiots should not bash women about in public places while carrying marijuana etc and then be stupid enough to try to swallow those items expecting some cop to fish them out of their festering gullet if you choke.

The fact MJ is illegal only came into effect AFTER the idiot already had the cops on his case for beating a woman in public. MJ, and the fact he is gay have no bearing on this case but have been latched onto by some people as a means to express some anger and hate.

Depends on the case you're trying to make.

If this was just a kid who police suspected was possessing marijuana and they tried to chase him down to question him...the kid believes he will be arrested so out of fear he attempts to swallow the baggie, and then he chokes and dies. Is it the kids fault? Or is the fault on scaremongering? I would personally never attempt to swallow a bag of weed, I'd just dump it somewhere.

If he was beating someone up then that should have been what he was charged for. Unfortunately because of his short-tempered violence and bad decision making he essentially helped take his own life.

But, I still stand by my opinion that the legal system needs to take some responsibility for enabling this kind of fear to flourish.

George--Could you please elaborate on this statement? As a certified EMT I find it fascinating you were required to perform a tracheotomy to pass 11th grade.

Fascinating but a bit hard to swallow...

Damn prohibition. makes people do crazy, and potentially deadly, things...
will not watch the vid, watching people die is not my cup of tea.
I once had to swallow 5gr of hash wrapped in a plastic bag (5 AK-47-bearing Pak narcs were surrounding me & getting closer, no other solution), I just don't know how I managed to gulp the thing and spend quite afew hours pretty worried about the outcome. luckily it didn't get stuck somewhere in the guts, pfewww..

Alas, not well wrapped enough to keep it intact, but wrapped enough for it not to be digested so no effect felt. That would have been a heck of a ride ! I was on my way to Tribal Areas for shooting AK-47, so it's maybe better the thing didn't kicked in eheh...

The police's responsibility is to enforce written law in an impartial manner. They're not politicians, judges, or paramedics. Any cop that attempts a tracheotomy on a struggling person is a lunatic in search of a lawsuit. Just imagine what would happen when that cut or snip is done slightly wrong and somebody slashes an artery or voice box, etc. Nobody in their right mind would ever try it and we shouldn't expect them to.

If we want to avoid these situations, we need to become politically active.

I wasn't saying that a policeman should just attempt to do something that he hasn't been taught how to do. I'm saying that it should be part of his training when becoming a police officer to be taught how to do such things, like tracheotomies, wrapping wounds, resuscitating people, etc., by a professional. They learn how to handle guns and how to take down suspects when the situation is in chaos, yet when one of their suspects starts choking to death they're just like...uhhh, sorry, this wasn't in our job description...then they shove their fingers down the persons' throat, only making things worse.

But maybe that's asking too much. God forbid anyone working in such a field would want to be more intellectually prepared for potential situations of that nature. I don't mean to sound like a hater, but I am a passionate person, and unfortunately my passion sometimes makes me take things personally.

Also, I agree we do need to become politically active. One step of many important steps. But unfortunately, it'll will probably be a good while before we see real changes.
