You should go to an electrical supply house and pick up an Ugly manual. It's a good reference for electrical loads and proper technique.
I'll also second the Intermatic timers. Those things are rock solid. Mine have been running for 10 years and keep perfect time. I use the 120v timer to control 250v contactors with 120v coils. That allows me to replace contactors cheaply and easily as the points wear.
