One of my other favorites from Badass of the Week is the article on Leonard Funk, Congressional Medal of Honor Winner...

http://www.badassoftheweek.com/funk.html

The one on Fridtjof Nansen is awesome too......

Leonard was a 1rst sergeant 82nd airborne...germans he was fighting against were terrific soldiers too & very tough .

My first mentor was a Capt 82nd , 3 tours VN in country ...was up in northern washington st back in 1971, we had some 3000 plants in 3 plots out in near Mt Baker out on Weyhouser lumber land ....unlike this WWII hero who was small but deadly, this Capt was 6ft4in /250lbs , big handlebar mustash & also extremely deadly ...but brilliant & extremely intelligent & super quick minded .

He would smile /grinning & say he was --->" 500lbs of wompin , stompin whale blubber !!

Was just a very young guy back then but loved this man who told me when he & his men went into Saigon even the green berets gave them a wide birth. Sorry op , but this little gurkha would be dispatched in very short order if he ever came up against one of our best . Of course Capt had been trained airborne, ranger , special forces & various other schools & sercret warfare combat studies along his decorated career .

And his favorite quote once he returned from Nam ? Back home was

" different strokes , for different folks"

Don't really see what one thing has to do with the other. That Gurkha is a lion among men.

i think rather than his just being a Gurkha, the moral of the story is dont ever fuck with anybody who just spent 30 years in the fucking military and retired as a CORPORAL!!!! this guy obviously didn't take any shit from anybody, including his own officers! haha i think he would give GI Joe a run for his money any day. a knife is a great equalizer.

He was probably sitting on that train thinking to himself, Shit! i used to be a Master Sergeant three days ago, then that fucking Capt busted me down to nothing and sent me on my way to retire on a corporal's salary! If i ever see that MF again i'm gonna cut his throat and eat his larynx. Just then the train door opens... the rapist wannabee looks remarkedly like the Capt!......the gears start twirlin, the steam starts coming out of his ears..... you know the rest... "a first-class ride on the Pain Train to Severed Arteryville"

First of all, this is not a pissing contest to see who's guys have the bigger nutsacks.......that's just puerile.

Secondly, go do some reading about how totally and completely the Gurkhas are respected by EVERY elite military group in the world......then go read about how many VC's were won by Gurkhas......

Yes, the SEALS, Green Berets and Rangers are badass.......we all know that......but let's not forget the Gurkhas have a warrior tradition that goes back to the 17th century and before.

imho this Bishnu Shrestha fellow is a true alpha male warrior, fighting's in his blood and he's genetically programmed to win each battle with stealth cunning and savvy. one of our 'trained' special forces soldiers wouldn't likely stand a chance in hand to hand combat given equal weaponry.

hahah that's what I was thinking! 30 yrs and a Cpl.... wtf?

In danger, people get exposed and this dude exposed himself as a bad ass of the highest order. Big ups to him & the Gurkha's, never knew about them until now.

Thanks for sharing, Genk.

dont fuck with anyone who's motto is

"better to die than be a coward" -- gurkha soilders

this is a motto actually used by them... and they live and die by it
these guys are known for there fearlessness and are HIGHLY respected
and have been virtually unbeatable when in combat

apparently when signing up you do a mandatory 15 years in the gurkha army... not like our military which is 4.

who said it was ?

Am aware of the valiance of Gurkha & the British using them & other tribal ppls they deemed "martial races" , were warlike & great resilient fighters in battle . They were renowned for their bravery , strength , & tenacity ..and after fighting them to a stalemate ended up using them later as mercenaries .

The list of "bad ass " descriptions of them could go on , they had many battalions that distinguished themselves many times over but will just leave it to what Former Chief of staff of the Indian Army , Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw said :

"If a man says he's not afraid of dying , he's either lying
or he's a gurkha"

Too bad we didn't have a few guys like this on the planes back on 9/11 ?

* Not to get into a pissing match with you at all , but will note that if Capt was on one of those planes , those hijackers would have all been dispatched quickly ...even 4 on 1 with box cutters .

This would guarantee you ....even when he would have been then
in his late 50's or early 60's and there would be still be that grin (fierce) on his face thru that handlebar mustash when each of their necks snapped .

best regards

PS : The philipinos have a similarly shaped knife tho little larger , my father has a collection still he brought back from Leyte when he did part 'of his tour there ....very lethal, played with them often all thru my youth:

not sure if things have changed but its fucked up the British wont allow gurkhas into there country after there done serving. these guys show extraordinary bravery and even die for this country but they get treated like shit. these guys take a lot of pride in what they do too, and are very loyal to british. still get dumped on though. its very wrong.

The Gurkhas in Nam were just as bad ass. All Gurkhas are bad ass.

You don't hear this often but there was a contingent of Koreans in Nam ...the VC were deathly afraid of , and for real good reason cause they were "bad ass" !

Now in India there are the Chinese at their northern borders sniffing around & pakistani "freedom fighters" ( fuck these islamic fanatics , send in the Gurkhas ! ) over in Kashmir ...came very close to an all out conflict up there in Kashmir too . But the world was to be focussed later more by 9/11 during that time of serious tensions between the Pakis & Indians .

And ya , the Brits were real slow to honor the gurkhas as they should have done

want to be a gurkha?

04recruitmenttest.jpg

A recruit takes part in the Doko Race at dawn, on the hillside outside the British Army Camp. This is traditionally the most gruelling part of central selection - a 5km race uphill, carrying 35kgs (about 77 lbs) of stones in a 'doko' basket on the back. This is more arduous than any other selection test in the British army.

"not"
this guy was brave but dont elevate them higher than they are
in the British army there a many more ardious selection tests
that a majority of them would fail.
i have worked with them when numbers were low in our regiment and they were joined in to keep numbers up.

they are very respectfull and have good manners.

Hmm, not exactly. In 2009 they have won the right to stay in Britain after retirement, but those who have joined before 1997 (when Gurkha base was moved from Hong-Kong to Britain) receive lower pension than those who joined after (formers are supposed to retire in Nepal, laters are supposed to retire in Britain, hence the difference in pension)

pakistani "freedom fighters" ( fuck these islamic fanatics , send in the Gurkhas ! )

mixing two different things here, Kashmir insurgency is not about Islamic fanatism (there are, but it's not), it's about independence, period.

came very close to an all out conflict up there in Kashmir too

That's what we've been made to believe... and it worked great !
