Dominican Landrace

Hello,
I’ll be growing out a landrace from the small island of Dominica in the lesser Antilles.

I got the seeds directly in Dominica from an older gentleman who grew a small plot for himself and to have a bit on hand to sell here and there to other locals.

He gave me bud, and seeds. The bud and the seed are all from the same batch that he had harvested a few months prior. Just by looking at and smelling the buds I could tell this was an older, more traditional Caribbean domesticate or “landrace” super stringy, loose sativa type buds with a beautiful minty, herbal, peppery smell. Effects were energetic but not racy. Uplifting but not trippy. To be honest its the most wonderful effects I’ve had from weed in a long time.

I’ll be growing these seeds out in organic soil. I “smuggled” back only 10 seeds. I have planted 4 seeds, all have popped and are a couple weeks from germination and already are proving to me that they are older domesticates but time will tell. Pictured here is some of the bud that the seeds came from and a couple shots of the seedlings

All are outside now adjusting well. My hope is that amongst these 4 plants there’s at least one male so I can make more seeds.

The guy who gave me the bud and seeds explained to me that he knew of some people that use modern hybrid seed but that he prefers the old thin leaf stuff and thus that’s all he grows. He lives in a very small village that’s sort of out of the way from most places so I suppose that could be why all of the other smokers/growers I met there seem to only have this type of “sativa”

The bud I got in the capital city however was much different. Very obvious indica sativa hybrids with a candy fruity smell/ more narcotic high. I didn’t even take pictures or save seed from those buds because there wasn’t much special with them.

The plants are coming along great, starting to get taller. They absolutely reek, one of the stinkiest plants I’ve ever seen in veg. It’s got that skunky “classic” weed smell, that thing that everyone instantly recognizes as weed.

Gettin taller, they all have red stems which can be a common trait with Caribbean and Central/South American heirlooms. They all still reek. Skunkiness is still there but it’s now taking on a coffee tone which is what I remember from the plants I saw in person in Dominica. Can’t wait till the buds start coming in to really see what they’ll have in store. Coming up on mid-August so the plants should be showing sex soon, fingers crossed for a male. I’d like to make some seeds with these plants and then use those seeds to do a much much larger open pollination

They all look a bit hungry, i mean you already have some yellow and they are not even flowering or do you want to push them to budding?

I’d like to make some seeds with these plants
So you will need much more nutrients for the seeds soon too.

Hey Mitsuharu, your right they are definitely hungry right now. Its my first time with this particular variety so I wanted to see how they would react getting just water. I’ve had some “landrace” stuff burn on me before from giving em too many nutes. I actually just top dressed them and will now start to feed them my usual stuff I give everything else.

Things are going smoothly, we’re about 2.5 to 3 weeks into flower. All 4 are female unfortunately. I was hoping to make seeds to preserve but I guess all I can do is to just clone each one and maybe keep my favorite indefinitely. The good thing though about having all females is that I’ll have a bunch of good sativa buds to smoke through this winter so I’m excited about that. Gonna be moving them into a little greenhouse soon. Smells are still very much classic skunkiness and coffe but have now added a little bit of lime in the mix

All are about 6.5 ft with the exception of the one that I topped. Stretching I think has stopped but the bud sites are rapidly developing. Time will tell how long they take to finish. One thing to note though is that the bud that these seeds came from was cut probably about 3 or 4 weeks earlier than what most modern growers would deem “ready” that being said I will let them flower out as long as my climate will allow but if weather declines prematurely cutting early might not be the worst case scenario as the buds I smoked from the parent of these plants was amazing

It’s about 5 weeks into flower now. I put up my little greenhouse to try to keep ‘em a little warmer at night but as you can see only 2 of the 4 will fit. The two others that are sharing a pot are both almost 7 feet and will unfortunately have to stay outside.

They’re all expressing themselves differently in flower. The short one in the greenhouse that I topped in veg is very resinous, sticky to the touch. The flowers smell exactly like carrots. The taller one in the greenhouse has a little less resin but has the same carrot smell. With the two tall ones outside, the one with the best/biggest flowers has essentially no resin or any smell except for the skunkiness of the leaves. The other one however has a little resin but with a more woody sandalwood scent

Finally harvested them last month. Obviously they could have gone maybe at least a month more but to be honest I’m very happy with how they turned out. All are dried and have been curing for at least two weeks. All samples except for the one that didn’t have resin have amazing effects. Very sativa stimulating kind of high. The kind of weed you don’t want to smoke if you don’t have anything to do, really good for working or getting into hobbies or projects, clear headed and uplifting with an almost electric type body effects. The carrot smell is still present after been dried and carries through to the taste as well

Do you have plans of popping more of the remaining seeds?
I got two Dominican seedlings going right now, im getting ready to put them outside in May when theyre nice and big and have a good head start on the outdoor season. Im really hoping I can make some seeds this time because for whatever reason she does not want to be cloned, only revegged. And I really don't want to lose the line. Last summers outdoor Dominican has gotten really nice now after having months of curing. The high has smoothed out a bit but is still uplifting and clear. Smells are going more towards tobacco and cedar now after being cured, I like it even better

These buds are from my most recent grow with the Dominica that have been curing since last November. Hopefully this season with luck I will be able to keep them outdoors until November when I’ll have to bring them in to finish up. But also on the horizon I plan on visiting the island again this year and hopefully contacting the same source and others and bring back more seeds direct from Dominica
