I've trained most of my life. Shorin-ryu, Judo,Aikido, Jkd/Filipino Martial Arts,Muay Thai, And BJJ. Not one damn fight. Don't go to rowdy bars, pay attention to your surroundings,be with friends whenever possible. Not too difficult to avoid bad situations.

Fights attract cops and I'd rather avoid both if at all possible.

yeah his knuckles must be FUCKED dude. After a good fight my hands are useless for at least a few weeks. If you're in MULTIPLE fights a night, I'd have to say you're injecting cortisone or something. It's just not possible...unless by "fight" you mean choking someone or kicking them.
I was a bouncer in college...got paid like 7 bucks and hour. After dealing with fat drunks on a couple occassions I realized it wasn't worth it and quit. Plus you have to deal with the crying women who get cut off for being too drunk. Most times they are NOT easy on the eyes, because who would cut off a gorgeous woman? You'd get them more drunk then "give them a ride home." Being a bouncer in the winter sucks balls too. Standing outside for 6 hours in freezing temperatures.

This. I knew a guy that was hell on wheels. The State Police came to take him in and he resisted. They started with mace and it only pissed him off. It took five troopers to take him down, and he still inflicted some damage.

I can tell you that mace has saved me from a mugging.
Scene: Rio, 3A.M., walking the mean streets alone. Thugs come down from the favellas at night in wolfpacks and assault/rob unsuspecting tourists. I always keep alert when walking, turning my head constantly and looking behind me. One night a pack of 3 guys had me in their sights. As they approached, I reached in my pocket and brought out my mace. That's all it took. Seeing the mace in my hand caused them to move on and seek an easier target. Now I am talking heavy duty mace: Tear gas & pepper spray combined, along with UV dye for marking your attacker. The large heavy duty ones have a range of 15 feat, and they make a gel version which is really nasty. It spreads over the attacker's face, and if they try to rub it off, it only gets worse. Works well in windy conditions, unlike spray.
Non lethal & effective, and washes off with soap & water.
I never worry when I carry it.
Google "Mace" and you will find it.
Don't leave home without it.
Strictly for self defense!
Peace.

It is very possible to protect your hands in a fight, if you know how to punch properly you can avoid much of the damage normally associated with a punch. The most important thing to keep in mind with a punch is to make sure you are connecting with your middle knuckle as it is aligned straight into the carpal directly behind it, this ensures you don't break some of the smaller bones in your hand which are angled. You can easily break your pinky and ring finger if punch improperly onto a hard surface (I.E. the skull).

Also I noticed you put quotes around fight when you were referring to chocking or kicking as if you were suggesting that do not qualify as legitimate fighting? When I train and fight I'm looking for the most efficient and effective way to end a fight, in my case that means closing the distance and attempting a submission, generally I'm looking for a blood choke (one which cuts blood flow to the brain) as it is the fastest and most energy efficient way of incapacitating an opponent. You could make the argument that knocking someone out is more effective but in reality knocking someone out is more of a matter of luck unless you are incredibly strong and they don't see it coming.

I'm almost 6'3 and ~185lbs (middleweight), i'm not the strongest guy but I have long limbs which helps my ground game. My strategy is to keep my distance until I can feel out my opponents range then close the distance, if I don't take them down straight away (which I usually do) I'll use the Thai clinch were I could easily stop the fight with knees. Otherwise I will use the body clinch to hip toss to side control, from here the fight is over unless your opponent has any ground fighting training. You can easily snap ones arm or put them to sleep from this position. This strategy is effective against one or two people though any more than that and no amount of training is going to prepare you for that. If you are in a situation when you are heavily out numbered your best defensive strategy is to run. In that case even if you are chased you are tiring them and splitting them up which will give you the advantage if you have good cardio which tends to go hand in hand with training.

Honestly though, no one should be in these situations unless you put yourself in them. If your in an area were you feel unsafe chances are you shouldn't be there in the first place.

I've only been attacked when there has been 5-10 people. Rarely see someone start a fight one on one, people don't like to attack if they think there is a chance they can lose. Had a few people square up to me one on one but then do nothing, think it was more about posturing/looking tough or seeing if I'd hold my nerve.

One thing that I think is important is body language and awareness. If you are walking in a rough place don't carry yourself like a victim, don't show fear. Make eye contact but don't stare people out either. If you can feel a situation is off then avoid it before it gets bad.
