Cost effective alternatives to RO systems.

not fully true, I've been running my RO system @ 1:1 over some time now and my membrane is still in excellent condition, then again I do flush my system and also have low ppms in my tap water.

Membrane life definitely depends on a lot of factors. Starting tds, and removal of chlorine/chloramine prior to the membrane are both important. All membranes should be flushed before and after each use.

I would look at Berkey Water Filters. Gravity fed for emergency situations, but stylish enough for any kitchen. There is no water waste and the filters work very fast. I've upgraded from the Berkey filters to the AquaCera filters.
One could feasibly purchase 4+ filters and make your own plastic housing out of any sized container.
