Why one gets sick of corona and the other gets off with a running nose

Why does one get deathly ill from corona and the other doesn't get much more than a runny nose? Scientists wonder about these kinds of questions. "I think we are at 20 percent of the picture," says professor of immunology Debbie van Baarle.
It remains unpredictable how sick people become when they are infected with the corona virus. But scientists now know more than a year ago. "We have the first ideas, but we don't know the bulk yet", says Debbie van Baarle.

Genetic Factors

Van Baarle is professor of immunology at the UMC Groningen and also works at the RIVM. "We know more and more about what determines how someone will react to corona." It is mainly genetic factors that determine how good your immune response is, says Van Baarle. "In addition, your exposome plays a role, everything you have been exposed to that can affect your health."
And what everyone knows by now: age clearly has an influence. "We know that the virus really affects older people. Immunity decreases as we age."

Overreaction

Overweight and diabetic people are also known to be overrepresented in intensive care. "They show an overreaction to the coronavirus. We think this is due to a chronic activation of their immune system," says Van Baarle.
But there are also cases where the opposite happens and the immune system does not act. This was the case, for example, with twins in Maastricht: two brothers who both got corona and had to be put on a ventilator, one of which eventually died. "It turned out to be a gene defect that prevented them from producing interferons. These are proteins that are important for the immune system."

Biobank

Almost a year ago, the Amsterdam UMC started developing a Biobank that can help answer questions about why some people become so seriously ill from corona. The initiator was neurologist and professor of neurological infectious diseases Diederik van de Beek. "In the Biobank we collect clinical information, such as blood, urine, faeces and all kinds of information from scans and tests in people with suspected corona infection," says Van de Beek. "We have now found a number of areas in the hereditary material that cause some people to become ill and others not."
It has already led to a number of scientific publications. "We have shown that some patients produce antibodies that shut down the immune system. These are really only men, you can also see that on the IC. If you have those antibodies, you have a high chance of ending up on the IC and dead. go to multi-organ failure. "

'Virus keeps showing a different face'

Much can be seen in the genes, but certainly not everything, says Diederik van de Beek. "I think we can explain about 15 percent of the very serious patients from corona."
Debbie van Baarle says that there are always cases that amaze her. "Even though we know the genes, we know exactly what someone has been exposed to and someone is relatively young, the penny can still stand out in one side or the other. I find it most shocking that the virus shows a different face every time."

Meanwhile, Florida's Spring Break festivities have evidently lit the fuse for another explosive increase in virus infections in that state. Donning my conical tin-foil thinking cap for an interlude of mostly sober reflection, a plausible cause-and-effect logical explanation is slowly beginning to materialize, deep within the musty echo-chamber of my largely empty cranium.

Potentially toxic masks distributed in schools and daycares in Quebec

Grey and blue SNN200642 masks should no longer be used, warn Quebec and Ottawa.

snn200642-masks.jpg

One model of mask distributed to Quebec schools and daycares may be dangerous for the lungs as they could contain a potentially toxic material, according to a directive sent out by the provincial government on Friday.

Radio-Canada has obtained documents showing Health Canada warned of the potential for "early pulmonary toxicity" from the SNN200642 masks which are made in China and sold and distributed by Métallifer, a Quebec-based manufacturer.

"If you have this type of mask in stock, we ask that you stop distributing them and keep them in a safe place now," the provincial government says in the directive that was sent by three ministries: education, families and higher education.

Some daycare educators had been suspicious of these grey and blue masks for a while because they felt like they were swallowing cat hair while wearing them, Radio-Canada has learned.

Health Canada conducted a preliminary risk assessment which revealed a potential for early lung damage associated with inhalation of microscopic graphene particles. Graphene is a strong, very thin material that is used in fabrication, but it can be harmful to lungs when inhaled and can cause long-term health problems.

Patrick Baillargeon, who is charge of purchasing Quebec's laboratory supplies, warns in a letter that Health Canada has not received any data to support the safety and efficacy of face masks containing graphene particles and therefore considers the risks associated with these medical devices unacceptable.

I must confess to finding myself absolutely livid with rage, on learning that in addition to the Corona virus originating in China due to their fondness for eating diseased bats, China is also shipping face masks that are impregnated with poison, for people to breathe through worldwide. One could be excused for developing a suspicion that the Chinese government nurses a sinister desire to perpetrate a mass-cull of human beings all over this planet. What end such a genocide is supposed to accomplish, remains an enduring mystery.

One thing is for sure though. Henceforth I will never again touch any mass-produced face masks for as long as I live. Any pair of freshly used women's panties will serve me well as a face mask, going forward.
