Hmmmm......Sunlightsupply has two categories, electronic and magnetic. So the electronic ones will not work, but the magnetic ones will, so long as its atleast 250 watts and magnetic? And are all magnetics pretty similar? Any reason to pick one over the other?

Does it matter if the magnetic is hps or mh?

You need HPS ballasts for the 250 and 400 Retro Whites :tiphat:

I have used the CMH 400 for a while now, I purchased mine for 55$USD and received a 400 HPS for free with it, not sure if the same deal is still available? I run the lamp with a 400watt magnetic type HPS ballast that was purchased on EBay for 40$USD. I have no complaints with either the lamp or the ballast. I have used this set up during runs from start to finish.

The following is a link to the supplier I used, I had researched the supplier prior to purchase and found that some had given them less than stellar reviews, but for 55$ I figured I would give them a try, I have no complaints.

I was just looking over the page and apparently they don't give the free HPS any longer, but on the upside it looks like the prices have come down on the CMH lamps, now at 36$USD.

Well, the numbers are in. Using the 315w Agro in a Bell Lighting LR400MV hood, over (2) Sweet Tooth #4 plants in a GL80 tent, Botanicare Ready-Gro Aeration Formula, 3 gallon smart pots and fed with Veg + Bloom, the yield was 291 grams @ 63%. Considering that I could have crowded one more pretty similarly-sized plant in there, or two more if all four plants were a little smaller, these lamps are nothing short of amazing.

Very nice...think ill have to give my leds a break for a little while. Maybe some supplemental red leds in there, get it up to a nice even 400w
How hot do they run? Over ambient?
Did you notice a better expression of terpenes with the fuller spectrum?

Using the 315w Agro.

I have never seen this lamp before, I did a short search and found the lamps and sockets for sale but no mention of the required ballast, can you tell us more?

As I said in an earlier post, I have no complaints about the CMH, I too feel that it is a great option for growers, the full spectrum rocks from start to finish.

The heat was actually more controllable than when I'm running LEDs, even with the burst of insane heat that we had earlier this summer (I don't have a/c). It was usually about 5-6 degrees over ambient. The hood being ventilated extracts the heat much more efficiently than trying to get everything with wholesale air exchanges like with LEDs. The net wattage is lower than what I was using before - my Hybrid fixture runs right at 400 watts, and when I was running the Lumigrow ES330, it was supplemented on the sides with 110w of PLL for a total of 440w. The lamps are damn close in lumens/watt efficiency to the best LEDs.

Some 660's supplementing it would probably work well - terpene production seems slightly lower, but the Hybrid runs right around 180 watts of 660nm, plus whatever is added by the PLLs. The broader spectrum made for substantially more growth overall, I think.

There is quite a bit of information earlier in the thread. There are basically only two ballasts at this point - the Philips, and the GEL (which is also marketed by Cycloptics/Greenbeams). They are both electronic, the Philips is low frequency and the GEL is high.

Thanks bro
I like the advanced links, much less than the sunsystem version
I was set to get sunsystem but I don't like the all in one design. I got an extra air cooled reflector I'd rather use.
I'm surprised you noticed less terpenes with such a broad spectrum. So led may still have the edge on utmost quality!? Not counting the gavita lamps which seem to bring the most quality out...too much power for me though

Due to the owner falling very ill and employees taking advantage of the cat being away he had quite a few irate customers. To make up for it he gave the$36each pricing to all. Thats a greatdealon these new cmh ballasts and bulbs it just is timeforme yeg wouldtoowatseful for Lil if any gain

I think that the quality from some LEDs would be very difficult to beat. For the overall picture, this lamp performs better than anything else that I've used to date. The smoke is very nice, and I haven't seen a perceptible difference in it's effects from the same strain grown under my LEDs. It'll be interesting to see how the topical oil that I make out of the fan leaves compares to the LED-grown material.

Beautiful as always Rives!
Please share pro/ con. Info you could sure between the retro whites vs the new bulb as to growth temps plants response etc. Thanx

Thank you. Sorry, I can't help you there. I've never used the retro whites. As far as I know, Azeotrope is the only one on here that has run both, and I think that he was very happy with changing out to the 315w. I haven't seen him around lately, but you might drop him a PM.
