Carbon scrubbers

So I've made my own scrubber before... It worked, not as well as I would have liked, but it helped with the smell. I'm now ready to invest in a good scrubber/fan combo and get rid of the stanley blower homemade filter. I've got a question for you all here...

I'm browsing at HTG supply and see these large differences in price between their filters and CAN/phresh filters. Should I just shell out the extra cash so I can feel warm and fuzzy with one of the high end brands or do the other HTG filters work just as well?? Anyone have any experience with them??

Here's what I'm talking about...

Here's the CAN 33 fan/filter combo ($342.50, 270 cfm, 6" flange)
http://www.htgsupply.com/viewproduct.asp?productID=46109

And we have the Growbright brand ($185.95, 424 cfm, 6" flange)
http://www.htgsupply.com/viewproduct.asp?productID=52609

Can anyone explain what the deal is?? I'm more than confused

Not to mention, those are different CFM. So depending on what you need for you're room, the can33 may not even be enough. I bought a phresh from Ebay. Paid $100 shipped for just the filter, works like a charm on my Tjerlund 530CFM. I dont see a huge difference... my room doesnt smell, my friend's with a Can filter doesnt smell. Not sure how long he's had his. Im going on 3 months, got it at 6 weeks flower. Supposedly mine has "finer carbon" which is better. Also its supposed to last 2 years, and has a refill hole.

yeah I was about to go for Phresh filter as well, but unfortunately I do not have the space to accommodate it so for this box I have to make my own

By the calculations on this site, when i was looking for my filter it seemed that DIY was going to end up being larger then the phresh.

you can make it at any size :p
Also, check out HAPS scrubber DIY in the DIY sticky, it's a box instead of a tube, and also uses less carbon but seems quite efficient from what I've read. Plus his box scrubs a big room, I could get away with one that fits perfectly into the area I need. Honestly, only a box would do - top right, on the right of the fan

Smell just isnt something i'd risk. I'd only do it by way of overkill DIY calculations, or at least match up my room size to the DIY one im copying (like you did). Also, after looking up a bit more about how airflow works with scrubbers (backpressure ect) i decided i really should make sure im matching my fan and scrubber with my needs for room size for proper function.

Nice fan tho - TD-200? I have a 125. Its cooling my 400w right now. While i see what you mean, the fan would be moveable, and you can also do a external. I do however feel its better to pull threw.

TD-125 as well. It is pulling through the carbon, ariflow goes to the left, scrubber will be on the right. So air will go into the scrubber, into the fan, out the left.

I saw at home depot they had some venting boxes that had screen on one of the sides, I was thinking about using that as the base as it's already a pretty legit vent part that would hook into the fan. We'll see though, I've got plenty of time to think about it.

Thanks for all the input guys. I appreciate it.

Either of those scrubbers would be pulling enough air to keep my room smell free. It seems like the higher CFM fan would make sense, because I plan on upgrading soon. But I don't want to skimp and end up with a fan/filter combo that works 'alright.'

I want no smell no tell...

So with that, anyone have experience with these growbright combos from HTG??? Or should I just shell out for the CAN fan/filter??

Ha nice... i take it also happend to have found the random insulated only duct 5" at Home dePOT too? Coulda snaged some from work, but i would have had to get 13 5' sections. I had a DIY scrubber (Honeywell Filter one) with it, but it just wasnt cutting it. First i had it to big, then to small, was deff stress on the fan. Possibly had i put a wee bit more time into it, could have made it work. But im expanding soon and so i decided just to do it big with a Phresh and Tjerlund. hindsite, i should have just bought that fan/filter combo from the start. Cheaper, more efficient. Oh well.

Cant speak for that combo, but i'd look into phresh filters on ebay, as well as Tjerlund fans. for $225 (thats with shipping) i got a 530 CFM all metal fan, runs cool, and a 440cfm phresh filter, plus a "Dial-A-Temp" aka AC Fan speed controller. No smell... im playing with Hindu Kush's that stunk mad in veg... zero smell outside the room.

Im all for "You get what you pay for" but with my nervious tension to replace filters once a yearish, fresh carbon = fresh air, price is a factor. While its only been a few months for me, i have confidence in my phresh that it will last beyond my year no problem. And as far as fans, i've had a Dayton, have a S&P, and a Tjerlund, and have gotten to play with vortex and can fans. If cash is no object, the can's were great fans! However for Price/performance... I'll stick to my Tjerlund. Fan has some serious suck... in a good way. Price is hard to argue too... $100 for over 500CFM.

My advice is always:

calculate the volume of the space. then calculate your minimum cfm to vent the entire space in 5 mins. so far very typical of what most tell you ..... my add, now double you cfm and buy gear to match the doubled cfm. buy a speed controller for your fan. you can always run your fan slower (and reduce noise) while still covering your minimums but you can't run the fan faster then it was designed for, even if you need it (temps, etc)

overkill give you flexibility and safety.... especially if you you get a really stinky plant.

security is NOT where you skimp!

So I'm pricing out some fan/filter combos, and the tjernlund + phresh filter is only coming out $50 or so bucks ahead.

I think I'm going to go ahead and just shell out for the CAN 33 and 270 cfm fan. Found it for 317 out the door...

Thanks for the help guys :thank you:

What would you say noise level wise for the Tjerlund? Because I think that is a factor that weighs in heavily on a lot of people's choice. I hear the s&p are much more quiet than other brands. I used to have an elicent 6" on a speed controller and found it worked excellent and wasn't too noisy when dialed back a notch on the speed controller.

I think what you've got to remember with the bigger carbon filters is that it allows you to get more air through increasing your overall cfm and reducing the load on your fan. I don't think I would run a can33 to cool a 600 watter...

As far as noise, the fan itself is no louder then a S&P of equivalant size. Its the fact that it's moving over 500CFM's that creates noise... the fan motor and rotational noise is near Silent... for that large of a fan. Setting side by side to my TD-125, its only slightly louder. When i was dumping the air in my room, it could get auidable outside my room... would sound like a desk fan was on. Pushing into my attic, closet door closed, you have to be inside my room to hear it. When my AC kicks on, or when i had my aquarium you couldnt tell at all.

Did you purchase akk from one site? Or are there multiple site for different parts. I searched google for Tjerlund fans but am not finding the one you have.

ahh... might help if i spell it right. Tjernlund. I got both off ebay. The scrubber was 89.99 free shipping, the fan was 79.99 with 22.50 shipping buy it now.

I got that combo from HTG and half way through flower I could smell my plants outside the house... so the filter only lasted 1 month. It wasn't in any terrible conditions, 70-85F, 50% humidity. Fan works great though.

I have a 10 x 10 room and have 2 Can 66's with 6" S&P fans. Best place for overkill in your garden.
