By the window ?

Hey guys,

Since the whole concept of auto plants is that they grow independently of light schedule, it follows that it should be possible to have them growing inside your flat by a window in winter, right ?

Has anyone attempted that ? If yes could you share with us your results ?

Thanks for any input.

I have done it with both auto and photo plants.

Days are much shorter so the DLI will be much lower (well depending on how North or South you are). Also the spectrum of the light is not optimal. This has a significant impact on yield and potency.

Depending on how well insulated your windows are, the windowsill might be a pretty cool place. So it's not just the DLI that's low, the VPD is also low. Even more so as winter air can be dry. Paradoxically you must be careful with the watering to prevent condensation on the windows and root rot, even botrytis.

Overall it's kinda possible. But it's more of a fun/hobby thing than a production method. Results are unlikely to be great.

DLI = Day Light Intensity ?
But VPD ???
DLI = Daily Light Integral - total amount of light over the entire day

VPD = Vapor Pressure Deficit (or differential?) - it's a more complex thing related to temperature and relative humidity and how the plant transpires moisture based on these conditions. There's a thread about it here:

Funnily enough revisiting those charts seems to show that dry air and cool temps are actually pretty good. Cool temps slow everything down though so I wonder what these cool temp VPD sweet spots achieve.

At 65F and below the plant sugars begin to thicken and slow growth rates. Several studies have mentioned maximum growth rates for cannabis are at 68F. ;)
