Brand New Grower

Hey All,

It's been a pleasure reading through these forums and learning all about growing my favorite smoking substance. So much so that I decided to give it a go myself.
The first thing I bought was cabinet and it's dimensions on the inside measure 18in x 18in x 14in H/W/D. It looked a lot bigger in the store!

The method I would like to use is a DWF System with a ScrOG. Do you think this would be too small? It's only for personal use and I don't smoke that much. I would just like to know where my weed is coming from and not have to drive all over hell and back to get it.

For lighting I was thinking about 4 x 20 watt CFL and 1 x 150 watt HPS Lamp.
http://www.amazon.com/Coralife-Mini-Compact-Fluorescent-Light/dp/B001F95NTS
http://www.hidhut.com/catalog/150-hps-sun-system-complete-kit-p-1427.html

But that was when I thought I had more room to work with. I'm thinking that a 70 watt would be more then enough in that kind of space. (And after a quick glance this is actually a MORE expensive option then the 150w)

I intend to use a carbon scrubber and system to cool off the lamp so that temps don't get too high. Also, is it better to push air into the scrubber or pull air out of the scrubber?

I'm going to use bag seeds to test this thing out first grow, but after that could someone recommend a good daytime strain? I've never really enjoyed being “couch-locked” so anything that gets you motivated is my kind of plant!

Thanks in advance, look forward to hearing from you! :smokeit:

a 150w hps is perfect for that box, i helped a friend grow with bagseed in 18x18 with a 150w hps in 16oz cups with buds as fat as the cup

Ok guys, some more planning ideas. I'm going to add a reservoir with a small water pump in it with a total capacity of about 20 gallons.
This will allow me to add water and nutrients easily as well give me easy access for pH testing.
I'm going to paint the inside white so i'll try and get some cabinet porn up for you guys this weekend.

20 gallons is bigger than youre box, external res? thats a good ideal tho,, its going be over kill tho, a 5 gallon should do, what is a DWF system? did you mean DWC?

sativas have the up high indicas are more couch lock, seedboo has Sam the Skunkman's Original Haze x Skunk #1 (10 seeds per pack) as freebies, as for what to buy, might wanna do some research, alot of people want that kind of high too

Your right I meant DWC, I don't know what I was thinking.. :dunno:

By seedboo did you mean http://www.seedboutique.com/sindex.php ?

Changing my plan just a little bit after reading through some more threads on the forums in the micro-grow sub-forum going with 4x CFL 100 watt bulbs for a total of 6400 lumens. I thought that was pretty good for a box this size.
Also found a nice 6 quart Tupperware (5.7 litre) tub with a lid that locks on and it fits nicely inside my box. Got the inside painted as well a glossy white (probably needs another coat but ran out.)

Here's some more builders porn.

More to come as I get it done. :smokeit:

Went out shopping again today and worked a bit more on the box. The only major thing i have left to buy is the parts for the carbon scrubber, and i don't expect that to be more then about 20-30$. Total cost for this build is about 250$ for a DWC system. About 50$ under budget so i'm very pleased.

It's been awhile

It's been awhile

Well folks I had a setback with the DWC system as it was WAY too loud. I gave up for a little while, but i'm back now and going to try a soil based system.
I've also done some work on the cab i'm using by adding a 80mm fan, passive intakes, and weather stripping (I don't like how this part turned out so i'm redoing that).

Here's some updated pics of the additions plus you can probably spot something in there!

P.S. I've always gone a little tape crazy so don't mind that. :tiphat:

I'll post updates as they happen. :jump:

Well the seeds have been germinated and are sitting in soil as we speak, I forgot to mention that this is a time sensitive run so i'm only going to veg for 1-2 weeks then I have just about 8 weeks to get them done.

Wish me luck!

sorry to hear about the dwc, i gave up dwc because of my hard water and fluxing ph, but i moved to coco with the same GH nutes you got, check out lucasformula.com for feeding plan targeted for cannabis. coco is super cheap, less than 20 bucks for like 18 gallons of soil, but they got small packs for 2-3 dollars and that maybe all you''ll need for now

are those little pipes sticking out for your intake? rule of thumb for intake is 1.5x the size of the exhaust 2x works good too

Yea those are for intake, I went smaller to start with but i'm sure it's not enough. I can hear the fan struggle when I close the door. Good thing piping is cheap. :)

Also: That was post 1337 for you.

Here's a picture I took of the seeds in their pots, those are 32oz Poweraide bottles cut almost in half for about 16-20oz of growing room.

We Have Liftoff!

We Have Liftoff!

Day 3

I tell ya what, I honestly felt like a little school boy when I saw a little green angel sticking out of the dirt I hope it's female anyways :)

Had two pop in total today, also made some adjustments to my box for better airflow as I had a record temp of 91 inside. Now the fan doesn't sound like it's bogging down so much.

Here's a pic of the other little gem.

Thanks to everyone for all the info and ideas, we're off and running!

Day 4

Day 4

I've "finished" my cabinet, updated the intake pipes to a larger size PVC pipe and put mesh over it. The only thing I have to wait to do it make an adapter for my Carbon Scrubber and then it will be 100% complete.
I've decided to name my plants 1 through 7 to make it easier on me to do updates. It should also make it easier on you should you be following this thread closely. :tiphat:

Plant 1: Must've grew 2-3 inches in the last 24 hours, thanks again for reminding me to put them closer to the lights =D

Plants 2-5: Showed overnight growth

Plants 6-7: Have yet to pop through the surface, but this could be because I planted my germinated seeds at varying depths when I started.

Here's a image of plant one as well as more cab pics.

Day 5

Day 5

Didn't add any water for the last 3 days, pots still weigh as though they have moisture in them.

Plants 1-5: All showed growth up to 2-3 inches and sprouted their first 4 leaves.
Plant 6: Popped it's head through today. :)
Plant 7: Still no action on this one, still hopeful.

Even if only 6 plants sprout and at worst only 1-2 end up being females I would still consider this a success. I'm still worried about my time limit though, I hope they are fast finishers. (They will have 10 days of veg from seed then 8 weeks of flowering then they HAVE to come down).

I'll be switching over to 12/12 on Sunday night.

if you made a custom wood tray and lined it with plastic, or just a plastic box, would be nice, so you can pack more plants in there , i would fill the whole box up with seedlings, if youre using bagseeds, by the time you curl the males and hermies youll have plenty of space to add more a sog is nice because you harvest often and you can have more variety , the spice of life,

Since this being my first time I don't want to over complicate myself.
It would be like trying to have sex with 20 girls my first time. It might work out, but damn would it be awkward.
