Air cooled reflector testing with Digital footcandle meter

I would say both strawberry. but If I had to pick one over the other I would want more uniform shape. I could always increase lumens by lowering the lamp a little If I had optimum venting and atmosphere. What do you think?

An even distribution of light with no hotspots, hotspots can be a BIG problem if the light is stationary and the hot spot is intense at least until you figgure out it's a realestate (location) problem - not a different issue.

I used to think a hood was a hood, was a hood mostly but this thread has shown me the light! Pun intended!

My 1000W Hps and lightrail will be getting a new "hood" to live in, Only bad thing is - now I want 2

heres the super sun

instead of inline cooling they put the vents on the side so they get minimal light loss. Sure its not as effective at cooling but you reflect more light to your plants.

Awesome!

So it looks like the Super Sun kicked the shit out of the Daystars. Very nice. That is the old Super Sun. They now sell them with end to end cooling. If I recall, they both tested fairly close.

You know what would be kinda cool on the graphs, is if the colors matched up from graph to graph.

I am slacking, need to get my ass in gear and test something.

darth, do you have a Super Sun 2 with inline cooling? Or perhaps testing the Super Sun without the reflective caps for the cooling ports? Or does the Super Sun have the reflective material at the A/C ports too?

How effective is that reflector at cooling, though? Especially with more than 1 per fan?

The super sun 2 is next on the list to test. The super sun cooling ports are part of the formed reflector. all you can do is take off the flanges and just put square caps on them if your not going to aircool. super sun with no glass data coming soon as I get the averages calculated.

I cant really tell just by looking at the numbers which hoods do better until I see the graphs. Those help me understand how the light is distributed over the area. I would do them myself but dont know how. I sucked at math

You got a higher average for at 24" than 18"? Does that seem wierd? Could 24" be the sweet spot?

It's easier to see a 3D image in your head if you type it out just like the floor grid. Notice how all those numbers make sense now.

You are correct. The average is a combination of light intensity and area. If the light is too close then intensity goes way up, but only in a small area. The "sweet spot" will also change depending on the bulb wattage.

couldnt test the supersun 2 somebody bought it. Will do as soon as new one arrives. I did however get a hydrofarm radiant 8 to see how the big reflectors do in relation to the smaller ones. I noticed for pico the smaller hoods worked better in 600 wonder if 1000 are diffrent? I saw no reason to test this without glass because its meant to aircool. Hopefully nobody wants that tested. The way the glass is attached is with tabs on one side.

and thumb screws on the other.

simple to work but what if there is a canopy below it and you have to change out a bulb. I kinda like the slide out glass and I seal it with foil tape. Simple but much more effective for a nice seal. Dont want any odors escaping!!

Nice 8 inch ducting for efficient INLINE cooling.

Whats got me perplexed is
A. Is it better to loose some light and efficiently line cool with huge inline ports or
B.Indirectly cool with ports on the side of the bulb to retain maximum light refraction and use intake and exhaust plenums.

So far my plenums are kicking ass and its all 4 inch ducting connected to a 8 inch plenum. 1 fan on the exhaust side and passive intake on the other

I also cut my testing time down by 20 minutes using this ingenious invetion.

bamboo stakes are handy sometimes. I will post data shortly. thanks for the graphs peeps.

i love the people that are so picky, but wont go buy a meter them self..LOL "if its not to much trouble can u test the 1987 sunsystem version 1.7, with the vents, then with out the vents, then with glass, then without glass(even tho ive never used it with out the glass), then at 10.7 inches, then 19.3 inches, then 47 inches with a 37 degree angle, with duct tape on the corners." LOL

few sugestions-

cooltubes any wattage
2 walls/corner with mylar vs. opisite 2 walls/corner NOT mylar
and that light difuser

thanks alot for the info already tho guys, keep up the good work

Would be Cool to Test THIS!

have any cool tubes users complaining about losing light in their duct seen this? just found this guy on ebay about a week ago and it seems to work pretty well to even out the light spread....im still thinkg about buying it but id figue id run it by you guys first

clear flex duct for you air cooled lights / cool tubes.....this guys adds aluminum reflectors to the tops to reflect some of the light down

here the link to the auction
