70w, single bagseed, in a birdcage

This is my first time growing in years, feels good having something like this to look forward to.
I know the master growers will shudder at how cheaply/poorly I'm doing this, but this is more or less a test run until I get some new seeds from a buddy.

Cheap miracle grow soil, some kind of flower food from safeway for nutrients for now, and a 74 dollar, 70watt hps from home depot, and a cheap fan, all in the crawl space under my hoose.

It's under a birdcage just because it's easier than rigging the light to hang, and also because I want to see how well it works for making a screen.

I'll try to get some closeups once it starts growing a little more, I topped it after a moose stepped on it, and it stretched a ton once I brought it in the house and set it on the windowsill for a few months.
Didn't get many sunny days, so not much growth.

Sorry about the picture quality, my camera's been crapping out on me lately, so I don't even bother trying to make it good...

I'm just about at 65 degrees latitude, and it was outside for the first two-three months of it's life, and it seemed to thrive during the 30-40degree (f) days, I took this picture on a day that was just barely above freezing, and there was frost on the ground all night...

Once it was inside for a while the trics disappeared, but it's cool in the crawlspace, it'll probably be around 40 or so in there once winter sets in, so hopefully I'll have some nice progress to share with yas...

Forgot to mention the catnip growing alongside it there, my cats like to get high too, and a little competition shouldn't hurt my girl too bad...

ok so you just vegged this outside, and inside for 2-3 months? im a little confused... why are you keeping it in such cold conditions if you had it inside previously? why not move the entire setup in... and what lighting schedule is that thing currently on?

Seedling on the windowsill for a couple of weeks, then outside in practically 24 hour sunlight, and I noticed that it was doing much much better as the nights got colder, but then it started snowing so I brought it back in for a while, where it stayed until I had the extra cash to get a light. During that time I noticed that it wasn't doing anywhere near as well as it was out in the fresh cold air, so the cool crawlspace is a happy medium... I hope

I put it straight into 12/12 because it's pretty close to the amount of daylight we've got right now.

Day three under the light, and I can tell it's happier here than in the window, but I think I'd be lucky to get 5 grams in the end...

Are you running it on 12/12? Is the area 100% dark when the lights are off? No offense to your cats but the catnip will use up nutrients in the soil and root space that could be going to your buds. I am all for it but I know I can buy the catnip in the store here so I would not waste the resources on growing it covertly.

Yeah, it's on 12/12, and it's 100% dark when the light's off.

I don't mind the catnip taking up nutrients or competing for root space, I'm actually kind of hoping it takes over the whole box.
I'm just testing this light out until I can get some good seeds, and never expected to see this plant finish anyways.

I looked at the pictures a little and my hopes for 5 grams seem pretty lofty now...

i say you build a little cab in your crawlspace and run a few plants at a time. it should be easy to construct and would be super stealthy in the crawlspace

That's what I'm aiming for eventually... Probably 3-5 plants scrog'd under less than 300w, I just don't have the materials at the moment...

Not much progress in these early days, but I'll keep this updated until the plant dies...

sounds like you got a plan :) i would run at least a 400w thats what i run and it is amazing. i might bump up to a 600w soon

Go for it, your low tech weed will still be better than bought off the street!

I love it!

The ole bagseed yellow nape amazon parrot birdcage grow!

Best of luck & hope you get some decent buds to enjoy.

Day twelve under 12/12

Day twelve under 12/12

The catnip isn't taking the nutrients too well, and I think I'll have to set the fan on a timer too, but other than that everything seems to be going great...

I consider this the front...

The cage is really just a nuisance. It gets in the way of everything and the plant is too woody/small to do anything with a screen anyways...
