I live in SoCal, I read

about those inexpensive magnifers

So I ran on down to the nearby Radio Shack

The clerks in the store had no idea what I was talking about.

I decided to peruse the store anyways. So I put on my Looking Glasses

and searched high and low.

I found 1 way down on the bottom, pushed way back on a peg...lucky. The cost was a little more than I expected

but I had just enough coin to buy it. Way interesting to really see where your plants are ripenesswise...I think I just made up that ripe word.

Another way to check your trich's is to take a picture

with a decent digicam on macro. Then view it on your computer and magnify/zoom in.

i have a rebel xt with a lens which cant really do macro, and the price for a macro lens is more than the price of a magnifying device..but great advice none the less!!

hand magnifier

hand magnifier

I had purchased a hand magnifier from radio shack a few years ago and gave it to a friend expecting to be able to get another at the source. They didn't carry them so I looked on the net and found some at 724ideal.com. It came to 14.14 shipping and handling included. from hong kong but it works great. hope this helps......

good drown

i got both the ones RS has, the 3 lens, and the 60-100.
the 60-100 is hard as hell for me to use unless i clip a bud. it works great if you have steady hands. i payed $20 for both

i just take a pair of binoculars and turn them around. i dont have to go searching for a magnifying glass from radio shack, works better too and i dont have to cut anything off the plant.

Binoculars work well, thanks for the tip! People might want a small light source to illuminate what they're looking at, though. I had to get so close it blocked my grow light. I'll also just say I found it easiest to focus when my eye was a couple inches away from the lens.

All great info i use the radio shack deal too, However what about where you look, top, middle? i usually go by the top of the plant as soon as i see some amber im good, the bottoms take a little longer

if there are different trichomes in different stages all over, wouldnt it be a good idea to take from the same place every time?

http://icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=142431

"thc is found in the disc cells"

so if you took mostly from the parts of hte plants that have sessile and bulbous thc glands...not containing the disc of the capitate stalked, then youre not getting full amount of viable thc for the plant at that time...? especially when the different thc glands have varying cannabinoids in different amounts, etc (one would gather)

i figured after reading that thread id take from the same cola on the top of the plant for testing. I had 6 or 7(i mightve added 2 together, oops) different strains going last run it got quite intimate with the different ones i tell ya HWAT.

I like looking at the whole bud, with my own eyes, no need for a microscope, the best weed I have seen harvested has been a greying glow, gooey grey/purple resin overpowering the sight of leaves or pistils, not just a transparent sprinkling of pixie dust.... In Nepal and other places, they leave plants to go really mature to maximise potency, why does nobody do it with bud ?

IMO to optimise any plant, you have to take a selection of buds at a few different stages, with labelled photos, and test the results... the winner you can then easily repeat by looking up the picture it was tagged with.

Its preference. Dont let some picture tell you when to pull them. Its best to understand the difference between clear/cloudy/amber trichs and how they affect the way THC is metabolized in the body.

Clear trichs generally have a higher percentage of THCV which gives a very clear headed high, but too much can cause anxiety and paranoia.

Cloudy Trichs have the peak amount of THC. Pulling the plant when all the trichs are cloudy will give you the most potent herb from the strain.

Amber Trichs have the highest CBN and CBD percentage. These cannabinoids counterbalance THC by reducing the potency, but increasing the duration of the high, as well as, mellowing the high. It all depends on the strain but some strains, especially indica's, do better with more amber trichs as it will counterbalance the anxiety and racey-ness. Understand that CBD and CBN act as a depressant in the body. If you want a more mellow, stoney effect pick you plant when you have 10-25% amber trichs.

Generally you want sativas when you have majority cloudy trichs, with the occasional clear and amber to counterbalance the high. If you have an indica dominanat strain on hand its best to wait for those amber trichs to start popping up.

Thats my 2 cents.

This is a very valuable information for new growers, i always like to know the logic behind doing anything, and since you stated all the relevant facts, it is easy for me to know what i want and how to do it. Thanks for the input :respect:

Good luck All :D

I just ordered one from Radio Shack from the 2nd link, I don't think the three lens ones would do well and for $12 I might as well go with the handheld scope...even if my plants still have 6-7 weeks to go anyway...
