OK. So after a lot of reading icmag (i mean months) and asking mates how to, I've finally managed to get a grow started. The seed is bagseed collected over the past year or so.
I tried two germination attempts. The first failed and I suspect it was the paper towel I used. The plastic container had a weird, wet, chemical smell while the seeds where trying to do their thing. Could have been a bleach. Dunno. Those guys never broke, and its been around 10 days.
Anyways...second attempt involved some more bagseed from a mate. This time it was straight to soil. I planted on the 13/06. Results below Next up, my cab.
Recently I have converted a large portion of my ceiling into a crude attic. I say crude as I'm no carpenter The board is strong enough and is a perfect spot for a secret grow. The dimensions are 600mm (W) x 600mm (D) x 1500mm (H). The inside is painted with a flat white paint.
I have two 220v AC fans I managed to acquire from a server cabinet. They are rated at about 90cfm. I had to mount them on some weather strip foam to isolate the vibrations from resonating in the box. It still makes a hum, but only barely. I'm sure i can tweak it some more. One at the top blowing out, and one lower down to blow in and on the stems.
Next up my lighting. I chose 150w due to its efficiency and my electric bill. The components for my ballast are for MH and HPS so i can use both lamps with the ballast, but never at the same time (MH to veg and HPS to flower). It will defiantly break something if that had to happen. Maybe even start a fire. I managed to find an inexpensive fibre glass box with the right dimensions to cram it all in. The large inverter thingy gets really really hot. This is normal. I've drilled many holes in and around the box for ventilation. So far so good
In this next pic you can see the MH light in it socket below the HPS socket. The reflector is alu (and earthed!)
HPS lamp in the MH box. The shop I bought all the stuff only had elliptical MH and long HPS.
My cheap and nasty timer for the lamp. My fans are not on timer and run 24/7. I think this piece of crap is failing. Should replace before flowering. Got enough time though
And finally....the start of something special. The cups on the left are part of failed germination attempt 1 and will be removed soon. The guys on the right are what we are interested in. Esp number 9 who broke soil some time today. I found those starter leaves pushing up on the glad wrap this afternoon. Hopefully I will see more tomorrow
