1000 watt "square kiddie pool" PPK, Tangerine Dream + Chernobly

Flowering, Day 43 update

I don't know what I was thinking as I mixed my nutes. I guess I was thinking that I was adding the Jack's Hydro to 600 PPM, and THEN adding the CalNit? I don't know. But essentially I was feeding them a slightly weaker solution than was recommended on the back of the Jack's packaging, and that's resulted in this:

Sooooo much vegetative growth! It's unruly! I didn't expect there to be anywhere close to this much vegetative growth this late :(

Chernobyl, Day 43:

Tangerine Dream, Day 43:

Budsites have seemed to swell as I've cut back drastically on feeding (300 PPM Jack's, no CalNit, little bit of calmag), but that might just be wishful thinking. Smell is strong and pungent, and everything above the scrog screen is starting to get sticky.

My clones are looking good (no pic now, sorry), and most bounced right back after topping. True PPK buckets are being constructed now, and I'll start a separate thread once those buckets get filled with something.

To clarify: I've only been feeding ~300 ppm Jack's with a little calmag since I realized ~10 days ago that they were being super over-fed, and have been cycling new water in/out faster than I had been to try to get the system back down to a healthy place. After a week, the bottom res was ~800 ppm (down from like 1800), and I've started seeing physiological changes in the plants; less clawing, leaves on the bottom 1/3 of the plan are a healthier (less dark) green, and it really feels like buds are swelling faster.

But wow, still getting crazy vegetative growth. WAY less N next time, for sure!

That looks like wind burn from a fan...is that from right near the fan.
Burning begins at the tip, an progresses.

Btw. looking real nice in there.

Thanks! Not near the fan really, but in a place that could see some turbulence. I've turned that oscillating fan off for now to see if I really need it. I had already pointed them up and away from the buds, but they were still causing some cavitation around the walls of the tent.

Beautiful plants pal! Seem's like allot of work the flood and drain, something i look forward to investing some time into in the near future. I grew the tangerine dream not too long ago, very poor strain lacked allot of everything to be honest, hopefully you scored decent beans!
Kudos.

Haha, yeah, next time I'm doing a proper ppk. I've heard mediocre things about the tangerine dream from other people too... I'm really hoping mine are better! Haha, I just thought it sounded tasty when I read the description ;-) The new clones are REALLY looking better. I'll get pics of that up tomorrow.

Looking really good Albert! I would back off the N if not cut it out all together at this point.

Great job and good luck! :lurk:

Thanks! And done on the N for sure. The leaves are still really green at the top, I think I'm going to do a flush (I know not in the PPK vocabulary usually) and I'm going to do it pretty soon.

Oh, and I should mention; I'm not color-correcting the photos I take. Instead, I'm attaching a pair of Method 7 aviator clip-ons to my iPhone, which seems to work pretty good. All of the pics have been under the gavita @1000w.

Had to do some transplanting! Clones are getting too big.

Starting to get my "real" ppk up and ready. I'll start a new thread with details on that when it's actually starting to come together. For now, got 2 plants in ppk tubs, finished with 3x6" tailpieces. I'm just going to top-water for now.

Old container (with screened tailpiece in the middle):

Pretty healthy looking:

Woah, root mass:

Day 51 of flower today in the tent. Ran out of space to upload pictures, need to post more I guess. I'll get to work on that (or maybe just become a sponsor) and get some new pics up in the next few days. The buds are REALLY starting to swell. An impressive amount on one of the Tangerine Dreams. And the Chernobyl smells gooood. Reeally good.

Oh man, I feel like a kid on Christmas today.

New tent, fan, filter, and another Gavita are ready at my hydro shop of choice. 10'x5'x7' tent. It's going to fill exactly 50% of my 3rd bedroom (literally). Starting my first perpetual grow sooner than I thought would. Just figured, "why wait"?

If I'm fast, I may be able to have the first plant in there by Friday! Pump/bulkhead fittings arrive from Amazon tomorrow, which is the last I need to finish the PPK system. Have to assemble the tent, run power, water, install the ventilation... haha, wow. Maybe I WON'T get it done this week. Hmm.

I'll post pics as soon as I hit 50 posts ;-) Haha.

Finally an update! Whew, had to cross that 50 post mark, didn't want to delete any old pics ;-)

Here we are last night, day 58 of flower, taken from the "chernobyl side" of the tent:

The Chernobyl is going to finish before the Tangerine Dream, which is going to make harvesting interesting, given how small the scrog net is. Since it's polypropylene mesh, I'm hoping I can leave the VERY outer edge to keep tension, and hack out the middle sections that are very, very intertwined with the plants.

Chernobyl is getting frosty, and smells absolutely divine. Some of the best looking nugs are super hard to get a decent photo of, I'll post some frosty-nug-porn once I actually chop. Here's an OK one:

And one that's pretty frosty, but woah heat stress:

Another lesson I'm learning: The Gavita Pro is amazing, and amazingly intense. Haha. I have (1) 6" HyperFan in the tent, pulling air out at 650CFM, a window air conditioner that runs almost non-stop, and fans inside the tent (Vortex, pretty powerful), that are circulating air around the light and over the plants (just to keep circulation, no heavy buffeting to leaves/flowers. The colas closest to the light are pretty much all doing this, and some are showing even worse heat stress/bleaching.

So... Next time... When I switch to the real PPK pots: Monster crop to encourage bushiness, flip to flower earlier, LST to control stretch where needed, and maintain more distance between light and plants. And of course, practice always helps, right? So much left to learn!

Oh, like this! NANNERS! From the top of a Chernobyl cola RIGHT under the light. I think (I hope) I caught it fast. These were the only ones I found. Seeds are from unknown providence (passed to me through 2 other people). Not that worried, this wasn't one of the plants I cloned.

Speaking of clones, they REALLY seem to like a full flood/drain style of feeding too. I've been mixing a 600PPM Jacks solution and feeding once every 24-36 hours. Growth was spectacular through the first week. Found that when submerging the pots in water (1/2" above top of pot), I was seeing a lot of gasses coming off the medium, like champagne bubbles. I let them sit in the flood for 60 seconds, let drain, and then put them right back. I think I need to transplant them this weekend! One is showing Cal deficiency, so I foliar sprayed them with a weak CalMag this morning.

Oh, and the 2 in the PPK tubs aren't doing bad either. Need to finish the recirculating system so I can stop hand watering them, I know the growth will pick up once I do. The one in the bottom right there is a monster cropped Tangerine Dream that will be flipped to flower as soon as I can get my new tent setup. That... will probably be another thread.

You know the funny thing is, I've done so much reading about how to GROW the plants, I really haven't read much about how to chop, cure, or trim the pants. Haha. I guess I need to fix that.

Honestly, I'm most excited about being able to make butter. So much butter. I'm going to cut WAY back on smoking for a while (read: none) to give my lungs a break. Maybe a few months. Edibles/tinctures are going to be my alternative way to medicate, but up until now, I couldn't afford to make that my primary ingestion method. But now? Woof. I'm going to have so much larf, popcorn, and trim that I'll have Chernobyl butter for at least a month.

Harvest Report #1:

Whelp, all the plants are down! w00t! For a first grow ever, this feels pretty good. Not thrilled with my results, but I learned a lot, and had a lot of fun.

So the first up, the Chernobyl. Since this was more of a 9 week strain, I decided to pull it before the remaining 2 Tangerine Dream plants. That happened on Tuesday the 22nd, and plants were stripped of fan leaves and left to dry. I was excited about making butter, so I was pretty liberal in my decision to toss buds in the larf/popcorn pile.

Here we are drying:

I went camping that following weekend, and when I came back, they were a bit too dry I think... once jarred they've been holding at about 55%. This is what they looked like while I was getting them ready to be jarred:

And a bit of a closeup. Not as dense as I'd like, but first tries, right?

I essentially filled this paper bag with larf and popcorn.

Baked some of the larf/popcorn off at 260 in the oven for 90 minutes (I misread the recipe, it called for 30, I did 90) tossing regularly, and ended up with 7.5 ozs of super dry (read: like desiccated) herb that went into 7.5 cups of clarified butter. Made some ridiculously strong butter!

Here's the last 2 plants in the tent, waiting to be harvested:

And the bottoms of the same 2 plants. Crazy how they've been fighting each other for space. Traditional PPK pots will be way better, I think.

And here they are on the evening of the 31st, 72 days, just a few minutes before the chop:

One of the 2 plants barely produced anything. The other one? Well, it seemed to like the Turface/Jack's mix just fine. Here's where the stalk met the ground. With my hand on the ground, I can't touch touch thumb to forefinger around the plant (not even close):

Here was probably the best looking cola, next to a beer can for size reference:
Now that it's starting to dry, I can tell that these buds aren't nearly as dense as I'd like them to be either, and they're smaller than they should be, but I'm still thrilled with the results. It smells great.

Lastly, here's the rootball from the big plant (with most all of the turface shaken out):

I'll post again once the Chernobyl is out of jars and I get a final weight. My guess is in the 3-4 oz range. Tangerine Dream I expect to be more in the 6 oz range dried, but I'm really just guessing based on the volume that came off the Chernobyl. If we count the larf/popcorn in the final dried totals, I might be near a whopping .5 GPW. lol. Must practice more!!

Hey man! I'm also a rookie doing things way simpler than your awesome setup. I just wanted to tell you congrats! Seeing this is, in one word, inspirational. Great grow thread as well. Keep it up!
