1989 Super Skunk F4

I was following another thread by someone else on IC on these seeds hoping to see what they held before I popped mine but the thread went silent to no avail. So I’m going to pop mine today to see if I can do them justice and see what the potential of these genetics are so here we go...

1989 Super Skunk F4’d by East Coast Originals who I got them from in a sale at the beginning of 2020 when they needed to raise money to rebuild a burnt down spot.

The story on em goes that a friend of East Coast Originals got them as F2’s directly from Neville. The Friend F3’d them before giving them to East Coast Originals who proceeded to F4 them.

My goal with them is to do an Open Pollination round, an F5 and F6 round to create a true-breeding IBL in the final direction of my selections. All of this work will culminate in a Super Skunk IBL to cross with other IBL lines to create progeny that express Heterosis AKA F1 Hybrid vigor.

My plan is to update it at least once weekly, but hopefully it will be more than that but we’ll see what my work schedule allows.

Yup the 90's seemed like we were heading in the right direction. Awesome music, weed and the explosion of xtreme/ action sports and the whole sport porn thing.
What happened????
I remember being in Amdam in the early 90's and the smell of super skunk permeated everywhere you went. Love that sweet flavor. Grew a Super skunk x Afghani this year outdoors, look was there but not the smell or flavor.

4 out of 8 seeds have broken dormancy within 48 hours of moisture. The other 4 look like they should show tails by tomorrow. Will have them in soil by Friday more than likely.

In 1981, while I was camping in dunes at Broome (think kangaroos) one of two girls who were camping near to us, gifted me a handful of seeds. When I grew them out later further south , they stank something awful. I didn't like it. I was unprepared. Uneducated? I passed most of the 2-3 ozs on except for what I could stash in a Dr Pat tobacco tin. I tried some a few weeks after. Strongest smoke I'd has since my first Buddha Stick 1975. Smelled like a dead animal on the bush. Finished weed I can't quite remember. It was pretty trippy stuff. Turns out Broome girl's boyfriend was a cray fisherman. Lots of moolah and six months off to spend it. I oft wonder what that stinky shit was? Skunk was around 89 wasn't it? I sure had something stinky before those days. Big lightish grey/brown seeds. With very prominent tiger stripes. About 5-6 seeds. Wish I had 'em now.

Ah the vicissitudes of youth... we know not what we have.

8/8 with cotyledons above soil 4 days after hitting the moisture. Easy and quick germination, with vigor out the gate. Over the first hurdle, and now the patience game as they journey towards maturity and taking cuts.

A little update. 6 out of 8 initial seeds are still rocking.

8/8 were above ground, 4 of them took off with usual seedling vigor. They look like the pic below:

The other 4 have/had some sort of terminal bud or apical meristem issue. The initial first node after cotyledons on these 4 were either extremely stunted, or non existent. The 2 that were nonexistent died off, 1 of the stunted 2 shook it off and is catching up to the first 4. The last one is slower, but going to keep it going to see if it grows out of it.

Below are a couple pic’s are of just how stunted the initial growth was/is:

When I run heavily inbred seeds, anything F4 and beyond I do expect decreased vigor, but in exchange for trait uniformity and truebreeding alleles.

I’ll get back to weekly updates once they’re ready for flower, until then it’ll be periodical updates.

Damn, those seeds look exactly like the seeds I was gifted in 1981/2-ish. Which grew out into one of the skunkiest stinkiest plants I ever saw or grew. Pretty horrible stink at the end... but amazing strong strong shit. Thai/SE Asian quality. Seeds were prominently tiger striped and somewhat larger than usual. Thems were early days and I had no idea what I had. Pity that.

I was gifted some super skunk x maple leaf indica from the nugswap community, this thread is making me want to pop some. i dismissed it as a sweet skunk but I realize I have no idea how old the super skunk is in it

A little update on the 89 Super Skunk F4.

All 6 have shown sex and are now cloned. The last few week were waiting patiently on the final, least vigorous plant to show sex and it ended up being a female.

So 2 males, one super vigorous, one that is less so (not ina bad way). The vigorous male has the stinkier, more pungent stem rub. In terms of morphology, there seems to be 2 primary phenotypes, vigorous, quickly branching and a slower less vigorous, slower branching pheno. I Seem to have gotten one of each in the males, and 3 of the vigorous and 1 of the less vigorous in the 4 females. So, along with an open pollination, I’m also going to do an F5 round with each male, to see which male possess the traits i ultimately want when combined back to the female genetics within their family.

Waiting for this last clone to root from the slowest plant, then flowering out the females for selecting my favorites. Meanwhile, I’ll finish upgrading part of my breeding chamber to get the pollinations going.

On a side note, I’ll be getting a Mass Super skunk female soon to make a separate super skunk line with.

Just wanted to do another update as I prep for flowering these 89 Super Skunk F4s.

Up potted the four Super Skunk ladies into 7 gallon pots in one of my flower spaces. The four ladies are the 3 on the left and the one bottom center in an “L” shape.

In veg these ladies have an acrid smell, not quite skunk yet but definitely a pungent, foul smell. In veg the lady below, #2 I believe, is the most vigorous and smelly to the touch of the lot, we’ll see if/how that transfers over to the flower side of things.

On the male side of things, the 2 I have are pretty uniform in outward appearance, the primary difference is once again in vigor and stench. Plant #8 is more vigorous and stinky, same odor the ladies have, but the males are a lot more intense. Keeping my fingers crossed it transfers to flower. First pic is both males. Second pic is my favorite male so far.

I’m going to open pollinate these in a mini greenhouse outdoors this coming season. After this flower initial flower run I’m selecting my favorite female and do a “version a” and “version b” with both males to see which passes on the preferred terp and other qualities. I’ve decided I’m going to toss in a gang of other females elites as well, a chuck just for fun. Got Chem d, 91, 4, Leadville diesel, pre98 bubba, Millie sour d, mass super, TK, and a few others I can’t remember off the top of my head. I got a 4x4 breeding area and going to SoG it with 1 gallons and a 2 male in 2 gallons. Should be starting that in 6ish weeks, waiting for 3 clones to arrive safely ??

Oh yeah, lastly, this is the backstory on these seeds, hoping they hold true to this and produce what I used to see back in the day.

I recognize that classic Super Skunk structure.

The best hash I personally ever made was from Super Skunk. It's the best well balanced high I have encountered up until this day. But I wasn't a huge fan of the flowers though.

Personally, I think this strain was bred to be used for dry sift. But that maybe be just my opinion. I definitely recommend to anyone to try to make some dry sift hash from this strain.

any one know anything about the SUPER SKUNK F2 cir 87 ??.

ran some a while back did not find what i was looking for but did make a bunch of freebie f3 and then some freebie f4, there out and about but i never really heard any one comment on how they for them.

also have some 90's super skunk from sense seeds, does any one know if NEV actually made those as well ??.
