President Obama- Drug Warrior?

Here is an excellent overview of President Obama's contribution to the War on Drugs:

Bummer- Barack Obama turns out to be just another drug warrior.

This is a piece by Jacob Sullum in the libertarian magazine Reason. It is long, but well written and comprehensive. Read it all if you have time.

Money quote:

...while polls indicate that “medical marijuana is far more popular than Obama is,” Kampia observes, “very few voters vote on the medical marijuana issue.” If Obama “has not chosen to make the effort” required to impose a new policy on a resistant bureaucracy, Sterling adds, “part of the reason is that those who care have not made him pay a political price yet.”

I expect this thread to be filled with examples of what Sterling says in the above quote: people who care about this issue, but rush to give the President a pass. When we stop seeing folks on a FUCKING POT GROWING WEBSITE so willing to lay down and take what they are given, maybe we will have a chance.

Good article.

I'm disappointed in the Obama governing style (vs. campaign style.) I remember right after he was elected, walking around my city and all the people looking at each other, smiling, thinking about hope and change.

Now it just feels like its mostly business as usual.

I can see why a politician would not make hard decisions that are unpopular, but I wonder if there aren't other considerations for why he isn't doing it. (Like, who's paying him, or what are they blackmailing him with?)

I would really like to see pro-MJ people confronting him on the campaign trail in the upcoming election cycle. (And the repubs, too.)

Everytime there is an opportunity to attend a rally/press conference or especially town-hall Q&A near home, I highly recommend that we all go to them and attempt to get on the mic and ask pro-canna questions.

If we could get the republican candidate to speak about it, maybe obama wouldn't be so afraid to do so himself.

It happened once about a month ago and he stammered and stopped answering the question. What if it happened at EVERY campaign stop? Maybe he'd get the message that this is something that is worth sticking his neck out over.

I love these figures

I love these figures

Still, there is only so much the federal government can do to crack down on medical marijuana. The feds account for less than 1 percent of marijuana arrests, and the DEA has about 5,500 special agents nationwide, compared to more than 730,000 state and local law enforcement officers, including nearly 70,000 in California alone. “We’ve seen a lot of empty threats,” says Steph Sherer, executive director of Americans for Safe Access. “We have seen hundreds of letters from the Department of Justice to landlords, and they have not yet prosecuted landlords. Many have received the letters, ignored them, and not lost their property. I’ve seen over 500 raids since I started this organization [in 2002], and each of those raids involved at least three people. We’ve seen about 5 percent of those people get prosecuted. The day-to-day battle is 98 percent about intimidation.”

I have always said if the American People knew what they could get away with the federal government wouldn't know what to do. They depend on us eating up all their fear propaganda. In reality there is so few of them that if push came to shove US citizens would win. There is more NRA members than all federal police combined. Know the truth. lose the fear.

In fact they are like Black bears. they seem big and scary, and take your food when your guard is down; but there are not that many of them, and as soon as people get together and start making noise they run away.

the DEA is shaking in there hoof shaped pig boots.
The emptiness of the federal government’s threats will become steadily clearer as the number of medical marijuana states grows and dispensaries proliferate. That is why U.S. attorneys intervened in the legislative process, actively discouraging states from authorizing dispensaries by intimidating governors and legislators with the possibility of a federal crackdown. Even scarier to dedicated drug warriors is the prospect raised by Proposition 19, the marijuana legalization initiative that attracted support from 46 percent of California voters last fall. “They were within striking distance of legalizing marijuana,” says Bill Piper, director of national affairs at the Drug Policy Alliance. “It’s probably freaking out a lot of people in law enforcement.” Similar efforts are under way in California, Colorado, and Washington, with an eye toward the 2012 elections.

KEEP OVER GROWING WE ARE WINNING!!!!!!!!!!!

Critics of such measures, like opponents of medical marijuana laws, say they are unconstitutional. That view is not only mistaken (see “Unbanned in Phoenix,” page 26) but beside the point. The federal government simply does not have the resources to enforce marijuana prohibition without assistance from the states. The feds can make trouble over the short term, but ultimately they will have to accommodate themselves to that reality. The Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act of 2011, introduced in June by Reps. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) and Ron Paul (R-Texas), points the way, leaving the states free to address marijuana as they see fit, with the national government’s role limited to blocking importation into states that continue to ban the drug.

^good luck with that

bump. I want people to read this even though I didn't post it. Those numbers really put the federal government and their fear propaganda in their place.

obama is a dumbass or a corporate stooge :)

lol, went for socialism in america lol...while doing nothing about medical marijuana...

now, if he had gotten mj through and everyone started smoking and mellowed out and started thinking.

he might have gotten more of the healthcare deals through (after having tried it, i wouldnt want myself or the children to live in a country that didnt have healthcare

i dont particularily subscribe to only the rich having the best health care ;))

It's kind of hard for obama to do anything right now, with the opposition hes facing from congress. No president has had to deal with that kind of attitude before.

Also I've seen positive changes in construction work, but an economic swing can't happen overnight, or in 2 years.

Even if he was to bring up a bill in our favor rep congress would immediately turn it down. They oppose everything obama does and try to tie in their own agenda's.

IE: tying the debt ceiling to the budget.
Or trying to tie more military funding to less unemployment.
So the president doesn't want less unemployment benefits but all reps would say is he doesn't support our troops.

Personally I don't care if he gets re-elected as long as it's not some crazy tea party or republican who gets elected. Things seem bad now we'd be really fucked then.

Republicans sure say a lot about making more jobs, but who wants a minimum wage job, we need real jobs that pay good money... those types of jobs in turn put more lower paying jobs to work.

Sorry for the rant, I just don't think much of this is in obama's hands. Just my opinion though.

Obama may be another run of the mill politician, but hes done far less damage to mj then what McCain would have done or what Perry, Bachman or Romney will do...

And who knows...with it being his last term he may just pull an Arnold on us and pass MJ legalization before leaving office. I know its unlikely and probably wont happend, but ill still put my faith in him over the consciously ignorant scum that inhabits the GOP.

But all of that was before he had pharmaceutical, union and law enforcement lobbyist throwing money at him. He has shown he can be as two faced as anyone when it comes to personal wealth. I sure would love to see his families stock portfolios.

Sir, Obama is no different from Rick Perry, period.

There are only a few presidential candidates that are for legalization, Mike Gravel, a democrat from Alaska who's now retired, and a great man, brought the pentagon papers to the courts, and helped stopped the Vietnam War. And Ron Paul, who's is the only one that I know of that is a presidential candidate for legalization. I saw him state this in 08 in a Bill Maher show, as well as have great principals on freedom and the constitution.

Do not think that there really is a difference between Republicans and democrats, the first are rapist, and the others are thieves. Still scum. The only reason I register myself as a republican is because of Ron Paul, but I am really a libertarian, or a person that believes in freedom. Put it this way, if our forefathers saw the republicans and their principals, they would be ashamed that this is what American turned into.

"It's not enough to say "Vote Ron Paul"

PEOPLE NEED TO SWITCH PARTIES 12 WEEKS IN ADVANCE OF THE PRIMARIES IN MOST STATES.

IF YOU DO NOT SWITCH IN TIME YOU CANNOT VOTE IN PRIMARY.

IF YOU ARE NOT REGISTERED REPUBLICAN YOU CANNOT VOTE IN PRIMARY.

IF RON PAUL DOES NOT WIN PRIMARY, NO GENERAL ELECTION ! REGISTER AS A REPUBLICAN. FIND OUT WHEN YOUR STATE HAS PRIMARIES. FIND OUT WHERE AND VOTE VOTE VOTE ! PLEASE !

WE NEED EVERY LAST VOTE ! Copy and paste this everywhere, and vote up" I copied this from Youtube, very common on comments under Ron Paul videos, see this year we KNOW what to do to get Ron Paul to the White House, and not some person who MIGHT be for marijuana legalization. So my challenge to you, and all other ICmagers is this, will you be part of the R3VOLUTION, or be part of the stasus quo. The answer to take our country back is right above.

The idea of presidents having free will is just a political illusion.

Wether democrats or republicans they only pay heed to those economic interests that "helped along the way".

Democracy, they way it stands now, is only a placebo.

Ive been a supporter of Ron Paul - the major problem I have with him is his stance on health care. The private sector has done nothing but harm. It has made it a profit driven industry where they have created jobs to ensure that profit is maintained by denying their members needed surgeries or treatment. Being healthy should not be something that is only given to those who can afford to spend hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars per month on insurance. America is the wealthiest and most powerful country in the world, I find it pathetic that this is such an issue. We can afford to spend trillions of dollars wasted on a war that benefits nobody except the uber rich billionares who own companies that provide to the war machine, yet we have people who absoultely refuse to give help to our brothers in sisters who are suffering or in substantial debt due to surgeries and treatment that is desperatly needed and not covered by their insurance (assuming they are fortunate enough to have the money to afford insurance).

This fucking country is going to SHIT. These fucking tea party rat scoundrels are nothing but ignorant self absorbed mindless assholes - the fact that we have politicians swaying their views to maintain their side is ludacris. Its too fucking bad that the majority of americans are such lazy, ignorant fucking morons that are willing to let these atroicities take hold. Our fore fathers are cursing us from the grave for letting these scum sucking wolfs run this country into the fucking ground.

Just in case you have not seen these interesting statistics......

A recent "Investor's Business Daily" article provided very
interesting statistics from a survey by the United Nations
International Health Organization.

Percentage of men and women who survived a cancer five years
after diagnosis:

U.S. 65%

England 46%

Canada 42%

Percentage of patients diagnosed with diabetes who received
treatment within six months:

U.S. 93%

England 15%

Canada 43%

Percentage of seniors needing hip replacement who received it
within six months:

U.S. 90%

England 15%

Canada 43%

Percentage referred to a medical specialist who see one within
one month:

U.S. 77%

England 40%

Canada 43%

Number of MRI scanners (a prime diagnostic tool) per million people:

U.S. 71

England 14

Canada 18

Percentage of seniors (65+), with low income, who say they are in
"excellent health":

U.S. 12%

England 2%

Canada 6%

I don't know about you, but I don't want "Universal Healthcare"
comparable to England or Canada .

Moreover, it was Sen. Harry Reid who said, "Elderly Americans
must learn to accept the inconveniences of old age."

SHIP HIM TO CANADA OR ENGLAND !

He is "elderly" himself but be sure to remember his health
insurance is different from yours as Congress has their own high-
end coverage! He will never have to learn to accept
"inconveniences"!!!

AND THE WINNER IS VERY INTERESTING!

The percentage of each past president's cabinet who had worked in
the private business sector prior to their appointment to the
cabinet. You know what the private business sector is... a real
life business, not a government job. Here are the percentages.

T. Roosevelt........ 38%

Yep! That's right! Only Eight Percent!!!..the least by far of
the last 19 presidents!! And these people are trying to tell our
big corporations how to run their business? They know what's
best for GM...Chrysler... Wall Street... and you and me?

How can the president of a major nation and society...the one
with the most successful economic system in world history...
stand and talk about business when he's never worked for one?..
or about jobs when he has never really had one??! And neither
has 92% of his senior staff and closest advisers! They've spent
most of their time in academia, government and/or non-profit
jobs....or as "community organizers" when they should have been
in an employment line.

May want to pass this on,we will NEVER see it in the mainstream media.

Well your article covers my laziness, not me being manipulated. seems like Beck used Michael Cembalest study which seems to be more subjective, which wouldn't make it a study, but rather manipulation itself. Those numbers are seriously manipulated. Your comparing entire countries who are under a universal healthcare system as opposed to the 25 million who are covered in america. What about the other 278 million americans who dont have coverage?

I am as profoundly disappointed as anyone else about Obama, but let us forget he promised to respect state rights, and has kind of sort of kept that promise other than big operations over their numbers and so on. In other words Obama is no picnic, but before you Obama-bash and become an idiot and want to vote Republican, remember that it would be far worse under most of them. They would still be fighting all pot med and otherwise, so before you bonehead Obama Bashers (easy but not honorable to kick someone when they are down) go voting for the enemy, think of that!
