are you still using the CPS 6 CFM now that you''re running the TVO2? i see they have a nice package deal with the TVO2 + Welch pump for a little over $7k and was wondering if going with the CPS instead of the Welch what other parts would be needed.

was also thinking about the AI Elite, but they are the same price as the TVO2.

Our Cascade TEK test oven came with the Welch pump, which we use for that application. We still use the CPS VP6S vacuum pump on the Terpenators but are looking at the Welsch pumps instead of Gast diaphragm pumps for two stage systems.

Here's the Mk. III thread!!! Everything is on order, except for a recovery pump. I am torn between the Appion or Promax..... any thoughts on this decision would be greatly appreciated. I will only be able to afford 1 pump at the moment, and would like to get the one that will be easily rebuilt(when needed), also curious about line filter/drier, if there is a specific size to look for, and if it should be in line directly before the input side of recovery pump?

Oops, I ordered Buna seals and screens... is this ok, or should I go with Viton?

Buna n works for the butane but it doesn't liked to be cleaned with alcohol, which is why we use Viton or PTFE.

Thanks GW, GT hadn't shipped yet, so I was able to swap all seals and screens to Viton!

I am curious if a 6"dia. x 12" depth collection spool is the way to go, standard top and down tube config, or should I stick with the 6" depth.... I guess the question should be how many 1.5" x 24" columns can be ran in the standard 6" x 6" collection spool without issue. I'm not planning on running too much material.... but I like to plan ahead as well.

I am also wondering if there would be any benefit to using a 1/2" hose from recovery port on collection vessel to input on recovery pump? How about a 1/2", or 3/8" from output of recovery pump to vapor side of tank? Seems it may speed up recovery..

I already have a 1.5 cfm vacuum pump.... I think it'll do the job.... if not please let me know.

If there are any reasons not to go with a G5 Twin for this very small operation, please chime in... I've heard that they will last if taken care of, and not run 50hrs a week!

I was also considering a SS wort chiller(in an ice bath) between the recovery pump and refrigerant tank vapor side, I'm not sure if that is overkill for such small runs, but I want to baby my recovery pump, because it is a large investment for me.

The Mk III performs fastest with a 6X6 spool, but a 6X12 spool is safer from the standpoint of aspirating liquid into the pump, and how many columns you can run before changing.

6X6 spools are easier to clean, so if you want a 6X12, you might consider clamping two 6x6 together

How many columns you can run, depends on the material.

1/2" would be some faster than the 3/8", but not much on a Mk III.

A 1.5 cfm pump that will pull to -29.5" Hg will work, though it won't be as fast as the 6.2 cfm pump that we typically use, which is a bullet train in that application.

An Appion will work fine in that application, but as you may know is not rated for NEMA7, Div II applications like ours.

The wort chiller would be a good addition.

Thanks again GW, for helping out the small guys! Should I run 1/2" from out side of appion to vapor valve on tank also? or only from collection vessel recovery port to input of appion? If it won't harm anything, I will go with larger lines in those 2 locations, as the price difference isn't much.

1/4" would be best.

The larger line is less important on the discharge side of the pump, but I run 3/8" or 1/2" both places.

On most refrigeration systems, the suction (vapor) line is oversized compared to the liquid line. I run 3/8" ID from recovery pot-> promax-> 3/8" 50' heat exchanger.
It goes back to 1/4" from exchanger to storage tank. Can recover 1# every 10min @ 85°.

so speaking of 3/8, i know i have to switch out the recovery valve to jic to fit my 3/8 hose but my recovery machine is 1/4(tr-21) should i just put a 3/8 adapter of some sort on the tr-21 so that i can keep the line 3/8?

also could i put the concentric reducer with the input valve on top of my spool?
the just hook the dump valve directly to the collection chamber ?

would i be able to top feed like this?
i would cap the reducer off with small cap provided and small triclamp(right)

Wondering how many people have overfilled the 6x12 pot with tubes that size?

ya i was wondering the same thing. like i said it just showed up yesterday , once i start running it I'm sure i will realize it problems and mod from there. i believe chonkski has a pic of his 6'' (recovery)spool clamped onto a 10'' adapter then a 10'' (recovery)spool.

the dip tube goes to about the middle of the spool, i envisioned it being longer kus i heard that helps reduce the chance of pulling liquid into the rc pump. not sure if thats good or bad but i guess ill find out soon enough

but even with open blasting methods i don't begin to evaporate till the end of the run. on average two cases(24 cans) is a little under 2# (Maybe closer to 1.5) and I'm guessing my (material)spool will fit a little under two # aswell. normally i fill up about 6x6 ss cooking pot with these 2 cases so i think i can fit it in my (recovery)spool.

I guess you could:
- Close liquid valve for whole operation.
- Take concentric reducer (input valve) and move to the top of the column, add the end cap, and leave your dump valve open.

But why do you want to top feed such a large column, I don't think you are going to get good saturation. Isn't that the whole point of the bottom feed in the first place?

If you are going to do it on A regular basis, leave it in default setup, close Input and Liquid Valves.
Get another 1.5" TC end cap with 1/4" NPT thread, put a ball valve and flare fitting in there and run your input hose to the top.
