Question About Environmental Controllers

Hello Community :tiphat:

I wanted to run this idea by members and get some feedback.

I currently keep all my clones (in domes and freshly rooted) in my bathroom on wire rack shelving. As soon as they're transplanted into 1 gal pots from the solo cups I move them into the veg room. Because they are young they don't really produce any smell, so when I shower in there I just turn on the exhaust fan as normal.

Now here's what I would like to do: In the bathroom add in more T5 lighting so I can keep the 1 gals in there as well to save more space. So in the bathroom it would be like 2-bulb T5 with clone domes under it, 4-bulb T5 with solo cups under it, and 6-bulb T5 with 1 gals under it. Probably 20 solo cups and 20 1 gals. This will obviously produce a decent amount of humidity (running coco), and along with some vegetation smell.

Now I want to minimize risk with plant smell escaping so here's what I was thinking: hook up an inline fan/carbon filter combo that will exhaust through a pre-existing duct port in the bathroom via an environmental controller. As soon as the humidity exceeds say 65% the fan would kick on and exhaust it through the carbon filter.

Now, since I will still be showering in there the humidity produced from showering would also have to be exhausted through the fan/filter combo.

My question is, would that much of a humidity load pose any sort of risk to the fan/filter? I don't really know if high humidity can effect a carbon filter working...

And lastly, can anyone recommend a good environmental controller that can be used to have a fan kick on with humidity/temperature set points? Since it's only for the bathroom it doesn't have to be anything too fancy.

Thank you in advance! :joint:

The biggest issue I have with carbon filters is just that BadH, the higher the humidity the less effective the carbon filter is, like the fine carbon holes block up with water, and stay that way until they dry out ..these ain't cheap ...and many young and old growers forget this at a serious hit to their wallets too.

avoid using any carbon filter above 65% Rh...

Thanks for stopping by, Vostok. I never knew that about the high RH affecting the effectiveness, but I suppose it does make sense. Thank you for chiming in!

do you not smoke at the spot??? what happens when you smoke a fatty or rip the bong? you blow that all into a carbon scrubber?

I smoke at the spot, although generally only at night when my neighbors are already asleep (I'm a night owl). So I just smoke where ever in the house and don't worry about the smell.

if your not having to vent, skip all filters, controllers and fans and get a vaportek 4000 and 120 day refill cartridge.
they work great for me during harvest so if your only trying to kill veg odors your good to go

you can skip the VT4000 controller and just get refills for the vapor shark for around $35
ona gel has comparable stuff also.I
use a combo of both at the trim site and trust me its needed!

Thanks for dropping in Gnome!

The thing is unfortunately I do need to vent in order to keep the RH down from the plant perspiration, as well as when I shower. I could in theory stick a dehuey in there, but would prefer a fan/filter combo for lower electricity consumption/no additional heat.

I might have to look into that vaportek device though for when I'm trimming. Right now I have a bunch of ona gel containers open around the house, but I'm sure they don't completely mask it. I was planning on also getting another fan/carbon filter combo for the living room where I trim, although this looks like it might be a cheaper option?

maybe even consider using a vaporizer ...better for you health and no smell as such?

I do own a vaporizer :) however this thread is not about masking the smell on consumed herb. It is about specifications of running a carbon filter in a potentially high RH area.
