Alaska TV Reporter Quits on Air to Run Marijuana Business

Viewers of CBS affiliate KTVA-TV in Anchorage, Alaska were jolted Sunday evening during the station’s newscast as reporter Charlo Greene dropped an F-bomb, disclosed that she was the owner of a cannabis club in the city, and informed the audience she was quitting her TV job.

“Fuck it, I quit,” Greene said with a shrug at the close of a report about efforts to decriminalize marijuana in the state, which will vote on the issue in November.

Greene disclosed that she was the owner of the Alaska Cannabis Club and that she was quitting to devote “all of my energies to fighting for for freedom and fairness, which begins with legalizing marijuana here in Alaska.”

KTVA anchor Alexis Fernandez looked momentarily stunned before apologizing to viewers. On Monday morning, KTVA had an apology from news director Bert Rudman posted on its website:

“We sincerely apologize for the inappropriate language used by a KTVA reporter during her live presentation on the air tonight. The employee has been terminated.”

Greene later posted an explanation of her decision on crowdfunding site Indiegogo.

seems she's real serious about legalization, here she explains why she quit with an anti-media rant and also claims that this will be her life's work.......

here's the TV stations take on the matter.......

KTVA’s official statement on Charlo Greene’s departure:

By now many of you have seen one of our reporters use inappropriate language and quit her job during Sunday night’s newscast. We apologize.

In addition, she had a personal and business stake in the issue she was reporting, but did not disclose that interest to us. This betrayed the basic bedrock of responsible journalism.

At KTVA we strive to live up to the highest journalistic standards of fairness and transparency. Sunday’s breach of those standards is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated.

Thank you for watching our news broadcasts and be reassured our mission is to present the kind of journalism that lets you make informed decisions about the community in which we all live.

So does that mean that the station KTVA only allows political reporters/reporting by members with zero affiliation to the party that they're doing a story on. Wouldn't allowing a reporter who votes and donates to the Republican party to do a story on a Republican candidate as very much the same type of collusion???

Most media sources would have loved to have a reporter investigating something that they had inside knowledge on, for the station to claim that Charlo Greene was unfit for non-disclosure to them is just a fucking smokescreen for their own incompetence & embarrassment.

these are the kind of hypocrisy's that make my life miserable, frigging double standards and always the advantage going to the 'right' leaning pov. :nono:

sadly it seems she felt she had no choice but to quit either the cannabis club or the tv job, she even says so on air.

lol, yup. and yet another hypocrisy, in the original article the Bert Rudman the news director claims "The employee has been terminated.” NO! actually the employee quit.......

'excuse us while we put our own spin on this story' should be their motto.

I really see your point Stoner and that fact of the right wing seemingly always to seems get their way, right or wrong, by hook or crook, and usually it is one of those. Over and over we have seen that. To win at all costs, even when shown they are wrong, even when that position is not the majority desire, that fact has always been really annoying to me. And that obvious spin that asshole station manager tried to put on it was just plain stupid.

But still I have to agree about her lack of journalistic professionalism. I think she went a little too far and violated the sacred integrity she was entrusted with and exists irregardless of all the ridiculous horseshit the 4th estate has to deal with everyday. What she did had to be a result of planning.

I realize that might be an unpopular view, especially here. But I see where people are saying she must have really been pushed up against a wall to do what she did. She had to know she was stepping into a huge integrity violation shit storm.

i don't see a big conflict of interest with reading shit from a teleprompter and running a cannabis club? they made it into a big deal. they could have taken the line that she can do what she wants in her free time. it's not like there is any political gain or power in it for her. ok so maybe she will have a pro pot bias, oh what a terrible thing, lol.

they couldn't have a reporter also owning a cannabis club. she isn't a politician so there's no vested interest unless she was using the news program to advertise her store. which she did...and then quit. but unless she specifically name dropped her own shit it's not a collusion, monopolistic, vested interest situation. no reason to fire her. i just hope she was actually fed up and could no longer go on spreading lies, and not just she's trying to get ahead of the legalization train and build a station for it to stop at. and she used her last job to get free advertising.

Anybody that ignores the fact that she got a huge monetary gain for her club as well as all the personal notoriety ($) by doing what she did which was obviously planned to be on live TV and thereby all the drama involved, is being hugely naive and gullible. Putting together a story like that isn't anything that just happens over-night. Doing what she did was not an impulse and did she to have had considered all the consequences at length and decided this. Whatever.
