$5,000 Watt for Watt Challenge

The debate over LED vs HID has gone on far too long with far too many naysayers who talk a big game but never back it up. It's not your fault LEDs got a bad name in the beginning that still hasn't gone away, but if you believe all LEDs are created equal you've got another thing comin.

[youtubeif]http://youtu.be/yFNjn6FwEdc?list=UUHlkNlhqT2YZ0fQ-QOc7ywQ[/youtubeif]

Hydro Grow lights have been independently proven since 2010 to provide double the yield of the mighty HID. Our technology has improved several fold since these original tests, to where anyone who now tests our lights side by side with HID is sold. Yet despite offering a 90-day money back guarantee, some growers still aren't willing to take the plunge and give LED a try. So we're doing one better!

We are so confident that NO ONE ON THIS EARTH can out yield our LED grow lights with their HID, that we are issuing a $5,000 award to anyone who can prove us wrong! And to up the ante, we are giving you a full 120 days to test our lights risk-free. Now you have absolutely nothing to lose, but $5,000 to gain!

Still confident that your HID is better than our LEDs? Put your money where your mouth is like we are, and take the plunge to try our Amazing LED grow lights!

Here are the basics of the Challenge. For full rules and regulations, email sales@hydrogrowled.com

TO BE ELIGIBLE - All growers must purchase (with the option for return) a 2014 X2 or SOL LED grow light.

PURPOSE

 • To provide a fair and equal evaluation, free of any opportunity for Customer to skew the results in favor of either lighting system, of LED vs High Intensity Discharge (HID) grow lights.

 • To prove that LEDs from HYDRO GROW are superior to HID grow lights for indoor horticulture.

 • To provide anyone who can prove that HID grow lights produce a higher yield compared to an equal wattage LED grow light system from HYDRO GROW, a $5,000 award.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

 • Customer must supply a HID grow light system including ballast, bulb and reflector within 10% the drawn wattage of the LED grow light system. The HID may be either Metal Halide (MH) or High Pressure Sodium (HPS) and the drawn wattage must be measured and documented (via a photo) with a kill-a-watt power meter. Each light system will grow one group of plants (a “Group”).

 • The total power consumed by the LED system must be greater than 200 watts, may not exceed 1500 watts and must be documented with the same kill-a-watt power meter in the previous section.

 • Customer must have separate rooms, tents, or a room divided in such a way that light from one lighting system does not mix with the other.

 • Customer must document the results from each light with a Brinno time lapse camera, available from HYDRO GROW.

 • Customer is may choose between self-pollinating tomatoes, beans or peas, or medicinal cannabis for the test. Self-pollinating plants must have a fan blowing across the entire Group (side to side) for the entire duration of the test.

 • Customer must start an equal number of clones taken from the same mother plant on the same day, to be placed under each light system. Customer must start 50% more plants than will be used for the flowering stage. It is mandatory that Customer have at least 2 plants per light system for the entire flowering stage. At the time the flowering stage begins, Customer must remove the smallest/weakest half of the plants from each Group so that an equal number of strong plants from each group remain under each light system.

 • Customer must use the same growing method and style of light for both Groups (IE: vertical farming vs vertical farming, sea of green vs sea of green).

 • Customer ensures all conditions (unless directed by HYDRO GROW) will remain even between the plant Groups, including but not limited to growing media, number of plants, age of plants, temperature, humidity, co2, nutrient parts per million (ppm), total dissolved solids (tds), electrical conductivity (ec), nutrient feeding rates, duration of lighting, etc…

 • Customer must keep a daily log of feeding times, amounts, nutrient mix, ambient temperature (with lights on), humidity, CO2 (if enrichment is used) and light duration in hours. Customer must take at least six high resolution photos, ten megapixels or higher, of each Group no less than once every 10 days. Customer is required to post their log and photos to an online forum at a frequency of no less than once every ten days. Customer must supply a link to the forum posting to HYDRO GROW.

 • The online forum must be in the same genre as the species of plants used for the test (ie: tomato grows are posted to a tomato or vegetable forum). Customer is advised to obtain pre-approval of their forum choice from HYDRO GROW.

 • All plants from each Group must be harvested on the same day. Final weight of harvest will be measured at time of harvest and must be documented via video (the entire cut & weighing of each plant from each Group individually) posted to the online forum within 3 days of harvest. If the plants grown are of a flowering variety, they must be weighed a second time one week after harvest to ensure proper drying has taken place. Both weights must be posted to the online forum within 1 day from being weighed.

 • Each time the Brinno is stopped to have the batteries changed, Customer will post the elapsed video to the online forum and send a copy to HYDRO GROW. At the end of the test Customer has the option to combine all videos into one, or make the request of HYDRO GROW to perform this task. Should Customer ask HYDRO GROW, the video will be combined and returned to Customer within 3 business days. Customer must post the final combined video must to the online forum within 10 days of the harvest date.

It will be interesting to see who buys into this. That is a lot of experimentation and money for a potential 5k.

The goal is to make the test indisputable for all parties - the grower, the reader, and of course Hydro Grow. When our lights out yield HID over and over and over again, with such great documentation, it will be very hard for anyone to argue that the results were skewed in any way. Likewise if someone does manage to pull off a better yield with HID, we want it to be indisputable as well. After all, we've got $5k on the line.

Cool, Im glad you put rules up, I saw your video on youtube, so I posted on another forum...now they all think I work for your company lol, either way I'm going to copy and paste these rules there if you don't mind. I guess if you r love your product don't mention it lol.

I can produce 1g/watt with HID in a 4'x5' (20sf) area. So 1000g in 20sf, your claiming with the use of your lights I will get 2000g in 20sf, 4lbs per 1000w of led in a 4x5 area. Sounds unlikely.

im callin b/s but im interested to see the results... I know a guy who got 3 1/4 lb per light - 12kw grow - 2 lights per 4x8 table- 2g coco drain to waste- with Loompa Headband.

Does everyone have to grow the same cut? Because strain is the biggest factor of all

Hi Outlaw, Ganja Guru, and everyone else!

We all hear about these people who can do 1 gram per watt with HID consistently, but in years of browsing the forums I have yet to see more than a handful of growers who have mastered the art of growing with HID. There are these urban myths of people who do 1500 grams from a single 1000W, and others who in the past are very confident in their ability to produce a gram per watt... but when they do a side by side against our LEDs, their actual GPW with HID is around 0.4 - 0.7 and our LEDs come in at double in their same hands.

We're not saying there aren't great HID growers out there, but we are saying that regardless of if you can do a gram per watt with HID, our lights will always give you more. It's not theoretical, it's been done by members of this very forum during 2009-2011. Yet despite these members doing their grows, plenty of bystanders still want to dismiss their results or try and find a reason to call BS rather than believing in their fellow growers. It's sad, but every grower "has to see it for themselves" to believe it, even if there are 100 other people who have shown the results (which we can say there are more than 100 tests of our lights online well over 1 gram per watt). Any newbie can pickup our light and hit a gram per watt, which you certainly can't say for HID.

As per the strain - you can grow whatever you like as long as you have the same number of clones of each strain under each light. The goal is to keep all variables even and to limit any factors (like phenotypes) that can skew results on either side.

Space is at a premium in indoor growing, my point is I find it hard to believe that you suggest that in the same footprint of an Hid 4'x5' or 20sf, you can achieve the same or better results. I'm not arguing the gram per watt but gram per square foot. It will take 2x or more led in that same 20sf to achieve the same results. That equals twice as many $1000 fixtures to achieve what a $375 fixture will do. It will take many many years for LEDs to recoup their capital costs. I can almost guarantee their will be better tech before the savings will be seen by switching to led now.

GG.

You were on the right track with the trials and challenges, ditch the outlandish, undocumented claims. Let people grow with them, and let the results and your product speak for itself. If there were 100 test trials of your lights, you wouldn't have linked that terrible grow, in a now deleted thread, in the first place.
