Without looking it up... can someone define the word "the"....

a word used to specify what you are taking about. Like for example "I walked the dog" Without it you would say "I walk dog" which could just as easily mean you walked any dog rather then a particular dog.

At least that's how I would define it. What's really cool about the use of "the" in our language is that we almost automatically know which specific thing "the" is referring to. Like if I'm here on the east coast talking to someone about going to "the" beach, he knows that I'm likely talking about a beach near by on the east coast. I don't have to specify on the east coast because it's understood that logically we aren't talking about having to drive several days and about 3000 miles to get to "the" beach.
