I didn't realize you had cans in there to start...Maybe its the propane that is causing so much back pressure. Have you burped off the uncompressed gasses?

how many can i get into the extractor before i have to reclaim with the appion? I tried something like that yesterday with the system at -28hg and it sucked three cans down and then blurp a the gasket blew on the collection pot...

I'd want to chill the collection pot too, yeah?

you should be able to load the extractor until its internal pressure gets around 50 psi. Reclaim and repeat until your tank is full.

heat the collection pot, cool the reclaim pot.

thanks mendo, I'm going to give that a go. I'm hoping the popped gasket was just a fluke... the crazy thing is it passed the 20 minute vacuum test without moving a hair...

Fill what with air? Shouldn't I start by bringing the system down to -29HG with my vacuum pump and then start adding cans until it reaches 50PSI and then reclaim?

So here is what you do.
Vac down your system with the valve to the reclaim tank off.
Turn off the valve to the system, attach the can tapper to the port, open the
valve to the system, open the can tapper valve. You should be able to get two or
so cans in. When the system pressure gets too high, close the can tapper valve, close the low side valve, open the high side valve. turn on the recovery machine and
open the valves to the tank. Recover down to -10 or so. Close the tank valve, turn off the machine. open the low side, close the high side. Now you can put more cans in.
Repeat as necessary.

I'd appreciate any tips on how to get that working...and I remember there was a technique to adding cans directly into the system but I can't find the instructions right now. Anyone have that?

Thanks!

Thanks Kcar, Generalgrevious

So, I got my cans in... It generally takes me about 4 minutes to get the system back down from 40 to 0 and add more cans. Took me about 5 hours to fill a 50lb refrigerant tank with 60 cans.

Now I'm having this issue where I'm getting higher pressure numbers than I'm used to- On a recovery of course the blue side drops down but the red side used to stay at around 100-110 and now it creeped up to 190 before I shut it off. I'm getting the same problem during the circulating shower with the blue side going all the way up to 116 before I shut it off.

Anyone know why this is happening? I'm using brand new recovery tanks from the HVAC store, new manifold, newport butane, pretty much new bhogart 5lb system and, an appion that only has 2 runs on it. The only theory I have is that the ambient temperature was about 15-20 degrees cooler when last I used my system in the spring time.

I really appreciate all the help I've received so far. Thanks all

One problem you may have is over filling your tank.
It has a capacity of 1320 in3 and 60 cans (300ml cans) would equal 1048 in3.
So you're at 80% capacity. Which should be fine, actually.

Are you chilling your tank? What brand of canned tane are you using? Some has propane in it. Nevermind, I see Newport.

Kinda crazy, those numbers. Mine never get over 30psi low side and 50-60 psi high side.
But I am using N-butane, and often release pressure at the end of the run.
Perhaps you have some air in the system, somehow?

Are you using a 1lb unit, Kcar? I might've read those have lower pressure numbers.

Isn't there a way to burp off some of the air? Can you refresh my memory on how to do that?

I was told by k...... at bhogart that during recovery .. high side psi using n-tane should be around 50 .. propane around 100 .. and canned (if you look at the MSDS sheets) is a blend of butane propane and isobutene ..should be somewhere in between ..it jumps higher than 100 with air or water in the system..
..I've had my numbers jump a bit when I don't bleed a little off the recovery tank before use

..with your tank in the upright (non-inverted position on the small recovery tank) ..slightly open the valves .. very quickly ..you will see a liquid and a gas spray out ..this seems to work very well for me .. your larger tank should have a second valve To bleed the top of the tank without inverting ..it would not be the valve you use to release tane...

I just pull up on the ring connected to the pressure relief valve...
I have a 2.5lb hybrid unit. (10"x12" collection pot and 3"x48" column)

..things became very interesting once i switched to the research grade tane ...

picture.php

..that is upside down but you get the point ..POL to 1/4" flare ..once i started running with just the 99.99% n-tane my low side pressure backed way down to the 10-12 area ..the high side valve started fluttering around ..but never wanted to go past 100 ..during recovery the high side valve does not move off the 0 ..i recovered the entire 3.5# i started with and had nothing but a slight hiss left in the lines @-16Hg..

..i charged the system with .2# of research grade propane ..did a second run and still no high side pressure during recovery ..@0Hg the recovery tank had 1.5# back in ..@-16Hg the entire 3.5#'s is back in the tank ..and a bit more gas was left in the lines ..i'm guessing that was the propane...

..if anyone ..Kcar/gw ..has any thoughts ..i would love to hear them ..thnx in advance...

..i do have a second manifold i'm gonna try next to see if the gauges react the same....

has anyone here rebuilt the g5 ..? i run the hell out of this thing and want to learn how to keep it tip top...

I have rebuilt mine several times, just not sure if I have it fixed. There is a whole thread about rebuilding them here if you look through the first couple pages

I have rebuilt mine and I am not sure if its any better also. I tend to think mine is just not as strong as it should be.
