run off

Ok thanks but I am ph'in the water to 5.8 and thought it was a good idea to keep an eye on the run off ph to make sure it's not climbing.

Ive mostly done dwc.. soil and soilless but when I was using promix (ugh) the big conversation was about mesuring run off or not and after awhile I stopped worrying about it and just ph water in. Worked like a charm for me. Ph is ph and I assume coco is not much diff. If any. Plus with feeds as quick as the will be and that much run off your ph is getting adjusted with every watering. Im new to coco but like I said ph is ph. Plants eat food ph goes up..plants arent eating and ph goes down. Just what ive noticed. Wait for others to chime in.
Peace

You dont have to measure runoff ph. Only thing i'd watch for is 10-20% runoff and ec within 0.2 points of what you're giving to your plants. For example I feed at 1.2ec so I want runoff to be 1.0-1.4ec. If it climbs over 1.4 I water next time with 25% weaker solution to get the ec back within the 0.2 range.
Hope this helps,

I work with 10-20% runoff during heavier feed programs. Lighter feed programs can get away with using less runoff because there is less build up potential. There are periods of time when I collect 30-50% of the runoff and use a 1/2 strength nutrient solution if I feel like the plant didn't need everything I have been throwing at her. Typically around the switch to 12/12, again around day 25, and then again after peak feedings during days 35-50 of bloom.

Runoff pH is totally useless in coco. No need to worry about it. If you're interested in the pH of the media you will need to do a slurry test. I use a 5.2-5.8pH solution into the container. Typically the runoff I get is in the 6.2 to 6.4 range as a result of the media's affinity for some elements.

OK thank's is ec the same as ppm ? I thought I read some where that over in the uk that is where they use ec instead of ppm as I have no meter for ec only ppm.

Meters dont read ppm, they read ec and convert it to ppm. Two popular conversion factors are .7 and .5, which means 1 ec could be 500 or 700 ppm.

For this reason, unless disussing nutrient profiles, its best to use ec

Ppm meters can be on the .7 or .5 scale so it just better to use ec as its universally the same. Ec is also a more sure reading as I belive some things dont show up in ppm readings but they do in ec readings (or vice versa)..this has some scientific explanation to it but I gave you the jist of it. I just got schooled in it and I already forgot the formula but 1.o ec is 500 ppm on a .5 scale....2.0 ec is 1000ppm on a .5 scale.
Ex: 1000ppm ÷ or × 100 I think. Not positive.

Does anyone have the ec conversion that goes past 1000ppm. Does the chart just keep going up 50ppm per one point of EC or .1 to 50ppm I have the chart to 1000 but I know I saw one in here some where that goes to 2000ppm

Ya 50ppm increase per .1 so 4.0 is 2000ppm.

like everyone else said here run off is important in coco. also if you really want to check ph of coco slurry test a bit with some ro water. i like to check runoff ppm/ec to make sure its good like someone mentioned here the ec shouldnt be more than 20% of what your putting in. Also dont go for constant heavy runoffs with young ladies you want them to dry out and be gentle with them so they catch their roots. once they catch their roots those ladies can drink a ton its honestly amazing sometimes lol. happy growing peace love and coco.

ps: every couple weeks a flush with half strength nutes doesnt hurt if your than worried about things get build up etc.

Thanks for the replies. My Tahoe's are struggling and not drinking. When I got then they had twisted leaves and were not feeling good. My runoff EC was about 3 pt.s higher than what I put in. They are super dark like they were being fed too much nitrogen and possibly too wet. One is really bad and the others are starting to grow a bit and the leaves are straight like they should be. I been trying a product on them and if it works I will let you know. Two days and a couple look more perky only time will tell.
