I heard you said drywalling sucks and you got rid of all the walls. And now you are hanging 200 hoods. Is that true.

I've been watching a lot of HGTV or at least I was prior to the fire... they really like to emphasize an open concept with flow, so you can see the back of the house from the front. I didn't have enough room in the house, so I made a bunch of light hangers from the smoke damaged lumber and hung some hoods in the yard with some hoop houses.

Drywall is easy... mudding and sanding sucks balls.

with extension cords run 1/2 mile to other houses:biggrin:

I call it "Flipping The Block"

Theoretically speaking...

If you went out an bought a 12Kg automatic fire extinguisher... Would you make a ballast/electrical/lung room and hang the extinguisher in the middle of that room... Or try and contain everything in the grow room and hang the extinguisher in there? Maybe I should theoretically buy one for each room? I'm kinda sorta highly paranoid.

There's a smoke detector in the basement now interlinked with the 4 other ac smoke/carbon monoxide detectors upstairs, and a 7Kg extinguisher on standby.

I'd try to centralize as much elec as possible OUTSIDE of the grow & put the auto extinguisher over that. ..and then a separate one in the room itself w the lamps.

Yeah but my thoughts about the grow room are to theoretically build it out to not catch fire. Drywall and white paint, no plastic film. Lamps in hoods aren't going to set anything on fire in the event of an explosion. Anything coming out of the hood would hit green stuff, dirt, or cement. Normally the low voltage stuff just dies w/o incident. I replace old fans as they're dying. The ballasts and electrical switches seem like the highest risk factors.

I understand that - and that's a noble pursuit

Your question,in a nutshell, was "..or should I hang one in each room?"

And my response, in a nutshell, was "(yes)."

:)

Been thinkin' about your situation during my time of potential repair/improvement. Cement board is on my mind a lot lately.

hey Bob,

sorry to hear about your fire. there are standards in place for preventing fires like you had.
ballasts like we use go up in flames all the time and yet you see them mounted to or hanging from wood in grows everywhere.

ballasts should be in a vented metal box. you might consider a wire shelf unit for your ballasts that is boxed in with tile backer board for a cheaper fix than buying a NEMA enclosure.

think about how you route your electrical cables. consult a real electrician.

propane burning indoors is very safe if the burner has legal plumbing between the outside tank and the inside burner.
you understand very well why it's not safe or legal to run a propane tank and burner with a rubber hose indoors now….

no disrespect because I've done it all myself, I'm trying to be safer now.

most grows are just one mistake shy of becoming a fire, glad you lived to post about it.
maybe consider starting a fire safe grow room thread and save some other lives.

I bought 3 of those auto fire extinguishers a few years ago and only have one hung. the two in boxes are not doing me much good, huh?

good luck and stay safe!

Thanks for the post chunky. There's already a thread for building a fireproof grow room: https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?threadid=24347

The correct answer seems to be buy another extinguisher. Afci and gfci circuits. Sealed room built with 20 min fire rated materials. They make smoke alarms that will text you when they go off. Automatic fire extinguisher. It's all there.
