How/Why did you start growing?

Personally I started because I got tired of "The Waiting Game" and I think we've all got to experience that at some point. I also notice that after about a years time I'm discovering I'm just as excited about it as I was when I first started the hobby....if I could only figure out how to turn my passion into a job!

Got a bunch of seeds on a whim, put them into party cups with some miracle grow and didnt know what the fuck to do when they sprouted. Spent weeks all over the net looking for info till i remembered this site and found this place has better people and info than anything else thats public.

After a couple weeks i figured id go all in and spend some cash, made a ton of mistakes at first, bought proper shit later and now im hoping for a somewhat decent yield with the limited knowledge i have. Youre right I look at it as a hobby too, even though it eats up most of my free time now, im having a blast doing what i enjoy. Making spiky leaves on green plants :)

I started in college. I had my first bit of medical marijuana there. Grape Ape. And I went back to the Tri Sig frat house where they were sellin the medical stuff.. sadly they only had some stuff called Pike from a local grower. His weed sucked. And it had seeds in it. I was so disappointed I told myself " I can grow better than this".. and sophomore year..it started. :)

I got tired of not knowing what strain I was smoking or anything in relation to the herb. Dealers are just profit machines, so I decided to try growing some and learn how to do it properly.
First grow - bought a color pack by Greenhouse and got 4 different strains to observe their differences, every step was a mistake, but now I think I know how to grow good plants in outdoors guerrilla:)

we started growing as soon as we had seeds. we always had great germination but always killed the plants somehow until about high school when we realized you just leave them in the ground outside or use a fluorescent in the closet. First grow that was legit for me was about 16, 2 small plants in the closet with a shoplight. Got about an eighth, pulled very early.

"Headies" only came around every once in awhile and in very limited quantities.

I had to have more.

forced into retirement by ill health, couldn't afford health insurance any longer (thanx to obamacare), had serious opiate dependence that had to be overcome. cannabis gave me an advantage in conquering that, but the cannabis was expensive also.
Greenhouse Seeds ad in hightimes and ICMag forums' synergy coupled with dogged desire created the ganga magi i am today...ok that last part was a joke...

I started growing when I was in my early teens back in the 70's, not for any particular reason other then just not wanting to pay for it. That ended a few years later and after some time in the cross bar motel I started buying street weed which was radically more expensive then before. I grew outdoor before but given I now had a record and I was getting older and not up for all the work outdoor represented if you didn't own the land you grew on, buying it seemed my only option. I tried growing indoors with fluoros but felt the end result wasn't worth it. Then in the early 2000's a friend made me aware of HIDs and sites like this one and OG and I've been growing indoor ever since.

Non med user here, so I like to grow as hobby. Also I like
knowing what I smoke is free from unwanted additives.

When I get a better grow area, climate controlled that is,
I will invest in some better genetics than what I have now.

But what I have now, in my opinion, is better than what I can afford, lol.

Started growing in a gutted PC case with CFL's, got some scorched, nasty looking, dry and airy, but grapefruit smelling bud from it (I think it was like 3g's), but even that the quality of the high was better than what I was paying 40-50 bucks for (the same amount)

I grow on and off, mostly because of external circumstances (otherwise I'd be perpetually growing), I don't hang out with many people who are into the greenery and have always felt uncomfortable trying to find someone to buy from... even when I've had reliable sources. Not to mention the fact that the people I have bought from for the most part are not really as knowledgable about what they're selling nor do they care much... "Sativa? what's that?"

I'd rather have control over what I use, not pay out the nose for it, have my privacy, and besides... there's a certain satisfaction and enjoyment that comes from growing your own.

I came to it late but through a friend from college. He did a couple of tours with the Peace Corps in NE Thailand and brought beans back  He didn't have a place to grow so we got them going at my place. He know a lot more than I did and I credit him for introducing me to growing. Haven't seen him for years and hope he's good.

I continue because I love growing the plants. The bonus is having a diversity of good smoke at hand.
