Abandoned dogs

Last weekend, we had two dogs abandoned on our property. One is a shepherd mix and one is a toy beagle.

They are both lovers and sweet as can be. Of course we provided them with a temporary situation until we could find homes for them.

I will never understand how people can treat such sweet animals so shitty. Sometimes I'm embarrassed to be homo sapien . . .

The good news is we were already able to place the toy beagle with a neighbor who recently lost her 16 year companion and constant lap dog (a chiwawa). She is thrilled and named her Trisha. Here are some pics she took of a very happy Trisha:

Good that you found a home for the beagle, they are often used as test dogs for medical research and can be hard find homes for them since the shelters are often full of beagles.

That Shepard is adorable, hope you have luck finding her a good home too.

It was breaking our hearts for Hershey (the shepherd mix) to be by himself. The missus took him to PetSmart and got him groomed. Then we put him in the front room. We'll let the girls get used to his smell and vice versa. Soon we will introduce them. If they get along ok, we'll let him stay in the house until we find a home for him. If they get along great, guess we'll have another puppy. He is just so damn sweet and eager to please. Plus, I think he's the softest dog I've ever petted.

Here he is after his bath and in his new digs:

Thanks, it feels good to be able to help some decent dogs that have been dealt a shitty hand up to this point. I really don't like more than two dogs at once, but he is so sweet and cuddly that I couldn't refuse him . . . as long as all three get along together.

btw ~ I'm not real familiar with the breed, but the folks at PetSmart think he's a Brittany mix. I googled Brittanies and it looks like they are right, especially the ears. So I'm thinking Brittany and Sheppard ... ?

Thank you.

We've been playing switcharoo. When Missy and Cricket want out, we put them in the bedroom, then put Hershey in my den, then let them out, then let Hershey have run of the house while they're outside.

That way, he'll get more comfortable and they will get used to his scent on everything.

Heh, he was running around investigating and found a rawhide chew toy. He pounced on it with a look of joy and began furiously chewing on it. We put a new one in his room for him.

did you check for microchips? your vet would read the code if they're chipped.

your girls should be happy to accept a male into the pack imo, maybe some pecking order stuff but the females will prevail there.

Now that you asked, yes he is chipped. Ironically, he was originally a rescue dog. We contacted his vet and had his records sent to our vet (he's current thankfully). We also used that info to report these miscreants to the Humane Officer who will be pressing charges. Idiots must have forgotten about the chip . . .

On a lighter note, here's a couple of photos of Hershey making himself to home while the girls were outside.

gotta watch your females. males make a lot of noise (and not much else) fighting, females want blood when they fight. no sense of humor whatsoever...

 Regardless of what species!

Cool move with those critters. Sad, if people chipped the dogs...they must have come on hard times. Rather sad, there are so many rescue shelters.

Glad you have a new kid! Besides, Cricket isn't exactly like a "Spike" with a nail! :ying: jpt

Cricket seems inquisitive about Hershey, but not aggressive at all. If there is going to be trouble, it will be between Hershey and Missy.

We're taking it real slow and hoping for the best.

@jpt - Hershey has a chip because he came to the last owners from an animal shelter where the shelter chips the dogs. Sad thing is, they could have taken Hershey back to the shelter. They have a policy that they will take back any one of their adopted dogs any time.

Next time these shitheads try to adopt a pet, they'll find that they've been blacklisted.

We haven't actually introduced them yet. We've been letting them sniff each other through a cracked door and Hershey's scent is now all over the house and yards. The first time we cracked the door there was growling and barking. Today Missy and Cricket were pretty much indifferent. Soon we'll be attempting a face to face. The missus needs to get another harness so we can have Missy and Hershey under firm control should we need to separate them. Cricket is submissive and a pacifist so I don't think she will be any trouble. We worry that Missy will feel protective of her, so we'll introduce Hershey and Missy without Cricket there to begin with.

Meanwhile, it has been an absolute joy to watch Hershey run his ass off in the back yard. He runs with the joy of release that Missy once did. It's old hat to Missy now, but I don't think Hershey has ever had this much room to run.
