Why is Neptune Harvest Odorless?

"Neptune's Harvest is an organic fertilizer made from fresh North Atlantic fish. It is made by a unique cold process that protects the vitamins, amino acids, enzymes and growth hormones.

It also contains all the micro and macro nutrients naturally found in fish. The nitrogen and other nutrients are chelated, so they are readily available for plants consumption. Unlike fish emulsions, Neptune's Harvest retains the fish proteins and oils and has no unpleasant odor. University studies have shown Neptune's Harvest to outperform chemical fertilizers."

"Neptune's Harvest unloads fishing boats, cuts the fish, grinds the fish remains and stabilizes them all the same day, so there is no offensive odor. Fresh fish does not smell."

I've never used Neptune's Harvest. So my first question. Is this even true? I buy Fish Hydrolysate from Kelp4less and it smells exactly like you would expect. Decomposed fish. How would it not have an odor? What concerns me is that they seem to be implying that Fish Hydrolysate with an odor is an inferior product?

The last paragraph in particular is puzzling.

"Fresh fish doesn't smell"

Aside from the fact that fresh fish does smell.(it smells like fresh fish.) They aren't selling fresh fish. They're selling a product that probably takes weeks? Months to break down by fermentation.

I happen to use similar products in other industries. Thai fish sauce and a cod liver oil I take as a supplement are both fermentation break down products. Both smell like fish. Heavy fish. To strong for most non Asian palates. The Cod Liver Oil even comes with essential oils like Cinnamon just to cover up the fish smell.

So whats the deal with this no odor statement? Marketing? Any truth to it? Is it because it's watered down?
I'm just trying to make sure I get the good stuff.

I agree NH 2-4-1 and NH 2-3-1 both definitely smell like fish but not as bad as fish emulsion.

The hydrolysate is what you want, not emulsion BTW for anyone looking, just comparing the two stank wise.

Not to threadjack but..

Dang.. I wonder if you could use Thai Fish sauce as a source of nitrogen?.. Or something to add flavor to.. some of the fermented products for adding flavor smell alot like fish sauce.

I think Fish Sauce would probably be to salty. They also remove the oils and perhaps other stuff that you might want.

So you're guessing... mebby.. it might..? :).. I bet its less salty than a powdered fert..

Out of curiosity.. what would be the NPK of fish sauce?. What is the the PPM of 5 ml per gallon

Sorry to the OP for threadjacking.. just kinda thought it was funny.

I have a friend in Ore who uses the Neptunes Harvest. He is sold on it.Comes in a 5gal bucket, and then you dilute it right?Makes a lot of fertilizer evidently.

Really sorry that I have no first hand experience to share, but I don't remember him saying anything about odor.

Neptune's does have a SLIGHT fish smell-this is hydrolyzed fish. Great products. And in comparison to others as far as fish goes, lol it might as well be odorless.
Go out and get yourself some alaska fish (emulsion) far inferior to neptunes and is made by a different process (emulsion). Go take a whiff of that stuff. Horrid.
Neptune's is the way to go very tolerable slight stink, and it wont linger around.

In any case it does sound like a fantastic product if it's that unprocessed and has what it says it does. If the price is right I would use it.

At 35$ a gallon it is like 3 times more expensive than fish emulsion.. I mean it is more reasonably priced than most of the nutrients discussed on this forum and probably higher quality too. It's a reasonable product as far as I can tell.

I have used Neptunes products for years along with Epsoma. Both great products...I grow outdoors in a greenhouse and also in 50 gallon dirt pots. My greenhouse has all fem seeds plants in it..the ones outside are reg seeds...every year I do a compare of ferts..the green house always gets Neptunes and the soil mix is 90% compost and 10% peat...same in dirt bags..I have used H&G ..Earth Juice..canna...Dyna grow..Botanicare...on my outside reg seed pots...and I will say the Neptune beats them all..I will say H&G and Earth Juice sea Blast are close but no prize...

Now even when I make AACT teas I add Neptune to it..I use it in the veggy garden also..it makes a great foliar spray..its like the next day you see lots of new growth...
I believe I read they add peppermint oil to the fish formula and it does not smell bad...

Remember the worlds largest pumkins were grown on Neptune...thier claim to fame
