I'd like to know this, too. I plan to hang mine 30" from the trellis, or in the center of a five foot diameter cylinder. I'm concerned this might be too close?

I think you'll be fine. Total radiant output is less than w/ a 1000w hps, just shifted into the visible range w/ a lot more blue. I'd pay attention a little more the first few days to be sure.

The reason I stated on how the 860w were intense is also due to them being in a OG vertical hood which focuses the light abit more direct.

The DNA Lighting thread here is a pretty good example of a run with the 860's and they have them what looks like less than 2' away.

i run the 860 the same distance from plants as i would a regular 1k w HPS bulb, about 18 inches
remember i am running mine vertical with NO cool tube or hood at all, just a bare bulb hanging in a circle of plants

My buds get this close too. How long have you been running the 860? How do you like them so far?

I just installed mine- 1/3 of the whole shipment of a dozen bulbs was bad; either the quartz inner sleeve was broken or the bulb shattered on initial startup.

I'm hoping he's as good as his eBay rating says he is. Shit happens, I'm not pissed, in fact I like the light from those that are running now enough that I want more bulbs!

I have head to head Super Silos with different bulbs going in two different bloom rooms, so we WILL get the answer as to whether this is a real step up from HPS or not.

As I said, he was entirely gracious dealing with breakage during shipment for me. I doubt that your experience will be any different.

The 860s have the same intensity as a 600w HPS. I did one quick run (12/12 from start) and was very pleased with resin and density. I liked to keep the ladies around 14" away. The prob I faced with hanging vert was the limited coverage, due to shape of bulb. This fall I'll be trying one or two on a light mover.

seems stronger than a 600w to me more comprable to a 1kw imo; I'd like to hang a vert 600 next to the 860... this pic shows a 1kw hps ushio and the 860 powered by a magnetic MH ballast

I have CDM 860W lamps going in the same room as HPS thouies and there's no doubting the 860W is brighter. It's not the age of the HPS lamps, either; mine are all just a few weeks old.

Here's the caveat; our eyeballs suck at measuring actual light output. We get fooled many ways. I believe the CDM lamps will provide better spectrum and more PPf than HPS thouies, and save me 15% off my power bill for a bonus. That belief and my eyeballs are not enough, so I'll run side by sides until I feel comfortable giving an opinion.
