i would love to borrow a book!! i just got a message from someone showing me a grower doing this whose shared some pdfs and one is about why you have to use calcium nitrate and koolbloom over organic stuff. scientifically, leaves can not process the organic ingredients foliarly so inorganic compounds are used which is what they make the synthetics out of. it also shows best ones and at which humidity.

what i really think about BRIX

what i really think about BRIX

I have a lot to say so grab your bong.
The mysterious drenches and anionic and reproductive/cationic sprays: The sprays need chemicals that can’t be organically derived or at least I can’t find a form of it without going into the synthetics section. The synthetics are more easily absorbed than organic sprays by the leaves because they can permeate the waxy layer that protects the leaf. Then there is the part I don’t understand and there is no info talking about how it works but there is a product sold by some lab or guru generalizing the process. I’m not sure if it’s just hype and the amazing results are because you’re an organic grower using readily available synthetics which will produce immediate results thereby you’re not used to seeing results so quickly because you’re used to organics slower process of feeding. Or could there be something science to the use of anions and making more nutes more available or something to that effect. Sounds plausible but the mystery behind the company that promotes this and is basically the only source of info (highbrixgardens.com) I think the secret drenches and anionic/reproductive sprays are really just bacterial dominant teas combined with seaweed naturally released PGR’s and then the fungus dominant teas in bloom with higher P/K sprays that are driving the growth reports.

What you think, well, that’s up to you and I’m not about to knock something I don’t fully understand BUT it remains a mystery so go and buy your kits and be blessed. Hopefully I will be blessed as well.

So that’s what I’m doing. I’m ignoring the high brix gardens blog and designing an organic alternative to synthetic sprays. There is such a thing as BRIX and I think the method is sound regarding the measurements found and plant health. I’m just very skeptical of this whole feeding plan regarding all the secrets where you can only purchase generalized products through a lab or guru. It’s hard to make an alternative choice if they don’t tell you what’s in the sprays but a simple description of what the product does. You however cannot get any info regarding the plan even without sending in soil for testing so I think that’s bullshit. So each week I am going to give out my feed plan and explain why and what I’m giving.

Week One: 2 cups EWC in 6 gallons water. 3 oz. Neptune’s Fish Fertilizer, ½ cup alfalfa meal, simple syrup 4 Tablespoons.

Microbes like fish. They think it’s yummy. I think it smells horrid. But it’s not about me. It’s about getting those microbes happy as fuck! Alfalfa meal releases plant hormones that increase yield and growth rates called TRIA or triacontanol and is full of nitrogen for happy microbes. EWC add good bacteria and the simple syrup sucks. I’m looking for an alternative. Maybe apple juice?? This mix creates a bacterial dominant tea which is beneficial for the veg period. Beneficial bacteria consumer nitrogen and potassium but are slower to consumer phosphorus. The fungal dominant teas are better for the bloom period because they consume the phosphorus.

................................:laughing::laughing:.....................................
Brewed up their first feed. pH before was 4.8 and after 16 hours raised to 5.8 which a beginning ppm of 300 and an ending one of 420ppm truncheon. was trying to give them a bacterial feed but the pH wouldn't adjust to anywhere near 6 so I waited a little longer which made it more fungal. Feed each of the girls and moistened the cooking soil then used the rest on my outdoor plants.

**EDIT: I wasn't aware of the times for brewing until it was too late. after I was done brewing and feeding did Spaceman Spliff remind me that I made a fungal tea.
Brewing times
You can further refine the type of tea you make by altering the nutrients and brewing time.

With an ambient temperature of between 15-20oC you can make the following brews.

Bacterial dominant
Use more sugars and brew for about 10 hours in a brewer.

Fungal dominant
Use humic substances and fish hydrolysate and brew for 18-24 hours because fungi take longer to develop

Protozoan dominant
Brew for 48 hours to give the protozoa time to start eating the bacteria and increasing in number

If the ambient temperature is cooler increase the brewing times they may be doubled if the ambient temperature is 6-8oC

If applying the compost tea in a temperature controlled glasshouse make the tea in the glasshouse.

When using an Xtractor brewing times are shorter read the specific instructions for the Xtractor.

The original Dream Berry must of gotten overwatered or what I am thinking is that the FFOF and Peat Moss mix needed more perlite and she suffocated from compaction. So I added a big bag of perlite into the cooked soil that has a nice healthy fuzz gathering on top, mixed it up, moistened it and then placed the tarp back on for another two-three weeks of cooking. I also went and bought another Dream Berry to replace her which is a better cut and is more established.

in the meantime, I've harvested the last couple plants and made a giant batch of bud butter for some Smore's Whores cookies :dance013: and fed the giant stem to my dog.

kinda understandable about the need for chelated chemicals to be absorbed by the waxy part of the leaf. for molecules to pass through a plasma membrane their has to be certain integral proteins embedded in the plasma membrane , the different integral proteins dictate the absorbtion of certain molecules into the cell. lipid soluble (fat soluble) molecules are absorbed faster than water-soluble molecules . I imagine the organic compounds used in some foliar spray contain high h20 making it repel off the waxy layer, inheritling falling into the soil, . once the compound are chelated, they are essentially more concentrated proteins containing less water so they are better absorbed through this waxy layer which is better absorbed through cell walls than organic counterparts. just my opinion on things..... thanks for providind such a info filled thread :tiphat:

thanks guys for commenting and keeping it interesting!!

makes a lot of sense that way tleaf!!

Spaceman Spliff, Calcium carbonate reacts with strong acids, releasing carbon dioxide:
it releases carbon dioxide on heating (to above 840 °C in the case of CaCO3), to form calcium oxide, commonly called quicklime.
I wish.

vortex tea brewer VS bucket/airstones typical brewer in a dissolved O2 test

vortex tea brewer VS bucket/airstones typical brewer in a dissolved O2 test

found a great video showing dissolved oxygen rates of the vortex brewer compared with the typical tub with some airstones method of brewing. after seeing this, I'm half tempted to keep an airstone in my watering can. the DO2 rate dropped dramatically with the airstones after turning them off while the vortex tea brewer held DO2 for 1 minute or more.

EDIT: I think this is because the vortex water is still moving the entire time the test was being done. as the water slowed down, the DO2 rates declined till both were reading the same when water was still and not moving. both showed equal rates of O2 with the airstones actually a smidge better. i think i may aerate my watering can. easy enough too.

have you not been bubbling your water?

I have a 170 gallon air pump with a large airstone to brew about 3 gallons of tea. I'm about to build a new brewer though which would use an air pump to blow air into a venturi attachment to my water pump which would circulate the water up to a T where I'm going to use my water halos to create a diffuser that will help keep bubbles down and add extra oxygen using a waterfall effect. I'm gonna make a video of it today. I don't want to use airstones since they're very hard to clean and the next brew is "contaminated". I considered buying cheapos and replacing each brew but that is just ridiculous! so I have been looking for different types of diffusers and a lot of my hydro stuff can easily convert over. It's suggested to have an air pump that is 25 watts or more which is what the video used I shared for DO2 rates. Mine is only 7 watts but I have two of those and a 4 watt plus I'm hoping the waterfall effect with the halos will add some extra O2. Using a water pump will also eliminate any dead zones and ensure everything is circulating constantly.

yea I have two airstones in my res to eliminate dead spots , the waterfall will def kkep things fresh in there and add more DO. a tip for the air stones , bubble them overnight in a bleach solution and there clean like new. I clean mine every two weeks :tiphat:
