Hi kiwi,

I'd increase a bit the feeding (slightly a bit more of Nitrogen too).
At this time of flowering, malawi will mainly fatten up in the upcoming 3 weeks and most of the killer resins will come in the last 3 weeks of flowering. Looking good so far!

Cheers for the advice Dubi. I'll give them a pk boost and a seperate N feed. Bad weather at the moment but night temps are still above 13c.

Sorry for bad pics, forgot camera.

Well we just had the worst april for sunshine hours in recent history.

Harvested 2 ounces which already seem to put people to sleep, plants still in the ground.
Temps are averaging from 18-22c during the day and 8-13c during the night. I'm going to feed it some more guano and take some pics today hopefully.

Weather is ok with sunny/cloudy days.

Hi Kiwi it looks like the low temps and lack of sun will affect the buds adversly unfortunatly, heres hoping for more sun this month. i didnt have any luck with my outdoor, bloody goats ate the lot. I am still eating goat curry though! The rest of the mothers have a target on their arses too!
My malawi is now well cured and very strong in an unimpressive way, i dont think I will grow this again, maybe I picked it to early but I cant emagine even leaving it longer would change it to the way I am used to having Malawi hit me. When I grew my own seeds leaving it too long produced a zombie like high, nothing good.
I will give the Zamaldelica a shot next. The stuff I used to get in Malawi was like speed, acid and ex mixed into one. Nobody could say they could handle the trippy high first time. You got used to what was going to happen and handled it better the more times you smoked it.
I have never been able to grow it the same no matter how hard I tried, even with seeds from the bud that did the damage, I am at a loss to try and reproduce the conditions.
Anyway dont feel bad if doesn't turn out to be exceptional, there are so many things that can effect it. Best of luck going foreward. Tangwena

Hi Tang, yeah worst april since I can remember; the Malawi was going really good up until mid april but the weather has turned around now, good sun this month so far.

Ahh I know that feeling of having your plants eaten too well unfortunately, they eat your plants, you eat them I suppose
It's more the possums we have to worry about over here.

What do you mean by unimpressive? boring high?. I suppose different environments produce different terpenes. Zamaldelica fem will be a different high to the straight Malawi, I think the pure Zamal is what you're searching for with the trippy high like the original malawi buds you had.

I harvested 2 oz of Malawi last tuesday because of some rot etc and my mates seem to love it and put them all to sleep by 8.30 last saturday night  all they're wanting is Malawi from me now.

Anyway here's some pics of them yesterday, I don't know if they can last till the end of the month, branches are snapping off and the plant is a mess in general as you can see. When do you think I should harvest these? feed them with bat guano yesterday.

Hi Kiwi I would leave them as long as you possibly can, it will be a battle to get the power with weak sunlight. I am not knocking Aces malawi its realy strong but its very heavy and makes you slow witted, slured speach ect. I feel good initialy but then it just drags me down to a zombie state. My Aussie mates who like Indicas also cant get enough of it. Go figure?
In Africa we used to get Majut grass, that is low quality and just makes you lethargic and or hungry. This is like the strongest Majut i have ever had. I never scored stuff like this ever in Africa. It was always like Oh shit can I handle this I hope it levels off soon.
It used to make you feel like super man, I am quite disapointed as it looked the goods I must have just got a bad pheno and fucked it up completly if the others are good.
I had the same problem with my own seeds when I grew them in Aussie years ago. My mates raved about it but I knew it was low grade realy. it must be the altitude it is grown in among other things as the plants thrive over here, just never get above low grade compared to the Malawi grown product.
i got another goat last night but I want the ram that will make them bugger off.
Best of luck with the run home Tangwena

Hi kiwigreen420,

It's a pitty the weather has not been good there in late flowering. Just by the look of the flowers of your malawi, i would recommend you to harvest soon and stop to add more ferts, especially if you think the weather is not going to be good in the upcoming weeks, she looks already resinous and mature!

Hi Tang,
Yeah I'll try to leave them a bit longer as I've noticed more resin coverage in the last week.
Oh well at least it's strong, my tolerance is so high a can barely get stoned any more so I think I'll take a break until I harvest the rest of it. People don't really care about indi or sati over here just as long as it gets you a decent buzz.
Maybe it's just the environment not producing trippy highs?. Maybe try look for shorter phenos as I've heard they're more up and motivating compared to the devastating long flower ones that you probably have. I wish there were pure Zamal offered, I'd say that's be pretty close to the Malawian grown buds. I'm the same, always not quite good enough but my mates always say it blows their minds but I know it's not that great.

Last year the Malawi would have been really good as we had prime weather till the end of may last year, just my luck that the first time I grow a pure sativa I have the worst season of my life.

Cheers, yeah it has been very average all season. easily the worst season in the last 10 years.

I might leave them for 10 more days?. would there be any Malawi phenos that finish end of April/early may?.

Hi Kiwi I hear what you are saying, its good to be critical and try allways to get the best you can. I hope you you get a nice strong plant, its looking really good at the moment.
Cant wait for a smoke report once cured.
My friends are the same, they like it when I give them something I rate, but then smoke crap just as happily. I say why drink metho when you can try to get cognac.
best of luck and may the sun shine for you.
Tangwena

Hi Tang,

The weather forecast looks good for sunshine until the 22nd of may, I think I'll harvest most of it next week when the weather turns bad. Temps are around 18c and night temps around 10c. Yeah lots of my mates smoke with tobacco mixed in which I hate, probably messes with the high too.

Do you reckon leaving a few buds on the plant for a long time will turn into male flowers and pollinate itself?.

Cheers,
kiwi

Hi Kiwi I also think mixing tobacco is counter productive and dont smoke cigs and never have. As for leaving some buds on the plant anything is possible but with the cold wet weather coming most likely they will just die. If it was warmer and summer around the corner it might re veg but NZ winters are to harsh.
I am chewing a malawi bud at the moment tastes right, smells right but knocks me out after a couple of hours. I can understand the Europeans liking it as its like a indian hash type high with a sativa edge. I dont dislike it and cant stop trying it. But its so not like the good Malawi I used to get, that was rocket fuel you felt like you had come down from a trip after it wears off, all emotionaly drained and spaced out.
The reason Malawi has such a reputation is from people who tried it on their travels and raved about it back home. But not every cob sold in Malawi is not. first grade and the majority only get commercial grade malawi which while still good is not the rocket fuel the first grade is.
The same with Durban Poisen many grades of good stuff and rarely the realy good DP stick if your lucky, but everyone thinks they are getting the good stuff in Durban.
I tried some really good DP sticks while in Mozambique on holliday, totaly different from Malawi though. Most of the Malawi in South Africa is low grade commercial stuff grown by every man and his dog to feed the demand from the SA gangs, hence some people dont rate Malawi as highly as they should and would if they got the real deal number one cobs.
So you can see why I dont think much of what I have grown in the past and even this last lot just never gets to the brain damage level I was used to.
Good luck mate I hope you are lucky and have a good pheno. I used to have one or two drags to get off the planet, anything more than that its second rate in my opinion. Sorry for the ramble but the bud is working its magic.
Stay safe my friend. Tangwena

Lovely buds kiwi, are you NZ native? I heard they smoke ganja with two hot knives... sounds very eco to me :) I usually smoke ganja with some tobacco, but its better to see more green stuff in every spliff I smoke. Do you use whole bud, or you remove steam before smoking? My friend who worked in NZ one year, told me this method hit him very strong several times..well he was unable to resume picking kiwies..real Balkan worker  Jugoslovanska gamad :smokeit: http://youtu.be/TG4FA2mTdwA

Konopenko - that's called 'spotting' or doing spots. Its just pieces broken off of regular dried buds and squashed into as big a ball as you can handle smoking. Its a no-no to finish a hit and still have smoke coming off the knives :) The knives are heated up on a stove top element like this one https://www.icmag.com/ic/picture.php?albumid=52838&pictureid=1252126 or else a gas burner. Touch one hot knife to the ball of bud and it sticks - you then squash it with the second hot knife and inhale the smoke through a funnel or tube. (Often just the top of a drink bottle.)

Just found this wiki link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spots_(cannabis))

Bucket bongs and "lungs' - which work like a waterless bucket bong -are other Kiwi classics.

Cheers, not too sure what you mean by native(multi cultural country) but I'm born and raised here(NZ european). I'm not maori if that's what you're meaning ha.
Yep we definitely use knives which are called spots, only for hardened stoners who can handle it. You use a gas cooker to heat 2 knives until they're just showing orange/red and then you push and rub the knives together under anything that can capture and inhale the smoke(I use a deer roaring horn or a 1.25 litre bottle cut in half).
Spotting hash can be very intense using this method and I'm not surprised your friend couldn't continue working.

Depends, if at home I remove all the stem but when hunting a just finger mull it all together into a joint.

There's also a thing called shwackies which is far too much for a non tobacco smoker and can really get your head seriously rushing. Probably the most conservative way, even more than spots.

You know your stuff, have you been over here before?. Lots of people who run out of bud scrape resin from their bongs and make little balls which sadly I'm guilty of lol, still gets you high.

Had 5 spots of bubble hash once...

Hi Tang

Yeah I hate it, we call them backy cones over here. I live in a warmer part of NZ near the top of the north island which gets an average of 13-15c in the day and 5-6c overnight during the winter months, still too cold?.
Chewing a Malawi bud? does that get you high?. Oh well at least it's nice and strong but I can see why you'd have high expectations after having first grade Malawi with unforgettable highs. Maybe Ace Malawi is some sort of Majut?. Sounds like you had some awesome African sticks/bud, I have some Mozambique seeds from holy smokes.

Surprisingly the Malawi's are progressing quite well despite lows temps and sunshine and look to be actually finishing off with some purple coming through slightly and the buds are definitely harder.

Forecast is complete sunshine untill next wednesday so I might harvest then(21st) What do you think?. not keen to subject it to more rain at this stage.

Cheers,

Hi Kiwi first up your plant looks awsome I hope you get a good week to finish her off.
Aces plant I grew was not Majut it was a great plant, awsome heads and structure its just the high and that could be many things affecting it. One thing for sure is the high from number one Malawi grown heads are better than anything I have smoked anywhere in the world. Its a big statement but I stand by it till death I believe it that strongly.
You have done a great job with yours the heads look 100% Malawi old style I just hope it packs a punch for you. I dont think you will get much longer out of your summer so your plan looks a good one to harvest after a bit of sun to get the resins matured.
I mainly chew my cured bud as my lungs are really stuffed from the oil we used to make from the heads and then smear over a paper and just use enough bud mulled up to get it to burn. Seemed good at the time but I am paying for it now. The high from chewing is different from smoking it takes 30 mins or more to kick in but lasts 5 or 6 hours, its easy to take too much at first and knock yourself out. So untill I know how strong it is I start small. I use about a quarter of what I would use in a one skin joint to start with. Its really trippy if the weeds good. The Malawi I grew knocks the shit out of me after a couple of hours its allmost like I took some Mandrax. Like I say nothing like the authentic Malawi grown herb, but plenty of my friends love it, a joint and a couple of beers and they are pissed like when they were kids again.
You are going to get a good harvest I am sure just hoping you get the trippy pheno isnt it.
Go the Kiwi's mate ripper plant.
Tangwena

Hi Tang,

Cheers but all the credit is to Ace, harvested on Tuesday and looks like a good yield for a bad/average season. Your Malawi plant sounds great, maybe you should grow more out to select a better one? I've heard it's quite a diverse gene pool. You're really lucky to experience top notch Malawi, I wish I could.

Yeah they look like pure Malawi but with denser heads, some of the more mature ones are quite impressive with the resin coverage. That oil laced joints sounds awesome but definitely can take a toll on the lungs, so chewing actually gets you stoned? 5 or 6 hours sounds awesome, never had bud last that long.
Oh well at least your Malawi sounds extremely potent. Bong before beer and you're in the clear, beer after bong and you're in the wrong so I'm thinking having some Malawi after some beers might not be the best idea

Hopefully it packs a punch after some curing, I'm keen to try the cob curing method but am not sure how to do it properly.

Hi Kiwi congrats on a good grow. If you get into chewing bud you will stay high longer, its just a long wait for the full effects to kick in 45 mins plus.
To make a cob just dry the bud till its smokeable, not fully dry. When the stalks break but dont snap off.
Then I use maize husks dried for a couple of days like rolling papers, lay a husk down it usualy curls up nicely, fill it full of primo bud, the best you can find. Lay another husk ove the top so it curls over the full one. Tie the end together with string and slowly wind the string as tightly as possible along the full length of the cob and tie off at the other end.
The cob should look a lot thinner and it doesn,t matter if its a bit twisted.
I then leave it for a week or so to dry more in a cool dry place. After a week I put it into a vacuum seeled bag for 3 to 4 weeks. (Keep an eye out for any mould on the cob)
After 3 weeks or so I take it out of the bag and inspect it. It should be red, orange and yellow instead of green, this is due to sweating in the vac bag.
I re wrap it up even tighter and store in a cool dry place not in the bag anymore just in the air.
If all has gone well in a week or so you should have a solid stick that needs aknife to cut and a grinder to break up into small solid chunks, not powder. Mine is 4 months old now hard as a dry salami but still slightly moist and sticky.
The smoke is very concentrated, dense and smooth tasteing. A lot different taste to the dried bud. (which I also like). 2 or 3 drags and your off, its very different strength to jar cured bud, sort of like a hash hit.
As you have such a big harvest it would be worth a shot, practice makes perfect, my Aussie mates who grow do their personal stash this way now, they love the taste and the fact that a little rock makes such a potent smoke when ground up.
Or in my case a rock chewed up can be eaten anywhere in public without atracting attention, you just need mints as your breath smells of mull and is quite distinctive.
I have a diary on here called Ace Malawi it has a few pics of cobs freshly made and cured.
By the way I only swet them in the vac bags to reproduce the traditional cureing method used by the Malawians where they bury the cobs in the ground for a few months to cure.
The problem is sometimes they rot if the soil is too damp with their method.
In the vac bag it swets quicker 3 to 4 weeks and you can keep an eye on the process without opening the bag.
All the best mate look foreward to a smoke report when cured, if looks alone were enough she looks Ace (pun intended). The Ace boys have good genetics thats for sure.
cant wait to grow there Zamaldelica over summer.
Best wishes for the future Tangwena
