Career possibilities in the world of legalized cannabis

I currently work in IT, its an ok job but its getting worse, has been for the past year and a half. Its getting harder and harder to get out of bed to head to the place.

I keep thinking of the saying "do what you love and find a way to get paid for it and you will never "work" a day in your life". I crave something I am happy to do.

The law aside, Im well aware their are ways to make this happen but to be able to do it on the up and up so to speak sounds more promising.

I dont have experience on a large scale but I do love plants even beyond our loved MJ. I find myself calm, relaxed, engaged, attentive, challenged and generally happy when dealing with my plants.

In the wake of legality, which I believe will happen sooner or later, Im thinking of what I need for a career in the industry, Prefereably with MJ. Im looking at Kwantlen and they have some horticulture classes that stick out to me. The main one being Greenhouse and Nursery Production.

Do you think a course like this would be the best way to make a living in the industry on the legit side of things? What do people in the horticulture industry make with this kind of training?

Im all ears and any input it appreciated.

Absolutely, we are currently working with Kwanltlans Institute of sustainable Horticulture, and we plan on looking to their horticulture school for students looking for work, or job experience. In time there will be more and more jobs available, we will be looking for 30 people at full production, in the fraser valley. Wages will range from entry level $15/hr up to $30 for a lead grower, and $90k + production bonus for head grower.

Are there any plans for education assistance for employees looking to grow with the company? Is it better to go get the education and then look for work or find work and then work on the education?

I highly doubt it....people are going to be lining up to work in this industry and there will be a lot of competition for the good, higher-paying jobs. LP's definitely do not need to offer educational assistance in order to attract qualified employees.

Just remember this: the people who got rich during California's gold rush back in the 1800s were the ones selling picks and shovels.

FWIW :tiphat:

People with an hort. education will have the edge, on non educated people. And people that have real world hands on experience growing cannabis will have an edge over all. But there will be positions for uneducated un experienced people too. Ie. Trimmers, room care tech. Call center, order taking/filling, ect. Or I might only hire pretty girls.......

This is all true. Those of us with a little foresight tailored their education and work experience to prepare for all of the huge opportunities coming out way. You would be surprised how many different careers and areas of study can be directly applied to MMJ.

Just a quick example of one business idea:

www.cannabisqa.ca

Like the poster who mentioned selling picks and shovels during the gold rush, the key is to look at the big picture and related industries/services. Take whatever education, work experience, skills, and knowledge that you have, and figure out what you can offer that will be in demand in a rapidly expanding marketplace. MMJ breaks a lot of the traditional rules of business and commerce, so don't be scared to get creative! If you have an idea of what you'd like to do, gather as much information as possible by looking to areas where legalization is already taking place. Take courses/schooling as necessary to try and best prepare for what is in store and to get some credentials behind your passion.

Just a few tips and suggestions, there will be plenty of opportunities for those that are smart, innovative, resourceful, and most of all, hard-working. Best of luck! :)

I have all of this. Are you currently in the LP game?

Impressive resume, very similar to mine, and that's how I got my current position, and don't forget the ability to pass a 10 years criminal record search. With a resume like that An LP would kill for a person like you, and the sky's the limit when negotiation a contract. Thing is there are a lot of people with similar resumes especially the mission' maple Ridge area of BC. It will be very interesting when it's time to hire employees.

I currently also have all of those qualifications except for working on a mega-MMJ grow on the scale mentioned. I do have experience managing greenhouse and nursery operations as well as other related projects on that sort of scale though. I originally had plans to get in the LP business myself, but have just recently decided to abandon that and putting my skills and expertise to use with another LP that has already jumped through all the hoops and that could use someone like me. I have a ton of knowledge on the growing and operations side of things, but my main specialty is QA....I've been working as a QA professional for almost 15 years now.

Every journey starts with a single step. I just want to know that the weather is nice when I get there ;-)

Words of truth! :) I am still on the journey myself, just getting to the stage where all the years of prep and hard work are going to really pay off.

Ganja Guru and Vag Puncher, get in touch as I'd love to chat with you both......I'm new here so i do not have PM privileges yet.

Cheers! :)

Nope. No desire too.

Was offered a job and declined. Told the LP about a friend of mine I think would be perfect and he declined as well.

Interesting, thanks for the info. Did your friend not like the offer/the way the LP was planning on doing things, or is he too just not interested in getting involved on that side of the line?

He wasn't sure he'd like the scale of the grow. He destroys 10-20 light rooms but is unsure how he'd do in a multi hundred light op.

What this your grow room design? https://www.icmag.com/ic/showpost.php?p=3610615&postcount=6

Looks interesting. Lol.
