Soil mixing help

I've been growing hydro and decided to give soil try. I bought some 420 growing pots(plants feed from bottom) They call for a 70% to 80% porosity. I can't buy promix or Fox Farms. All I have here is Lowe"s and they don't handle any of those type soils. Hell I can't even buy perlite without the Miracle Grow fertilize added. I do order perlite off Amazon though. So how can I mix me a batch up? I don't need any nutritional value, because I'm mixing my on nutes. Thanks

Lowes carries plain perlite and vermiculite.

they also have blood meal, bone meal, lime, peat moss, and MG potting soil.
also veg and bloom fertilizer, mosquito dunks, and other good stuff.

I'm glad yours does, because mine don't. Peat moss some federalize, vermiculite, and lime. Lowe's Manger called me this morning about Pro-Mix HP. He said they use local vendors, and Pro-mix is not one of them. Nearest Lowes that has it 313 miles.

There are Hydro store everywhere these days. Unless you're living under a rock you should be able to locate a hydro store within a few hours drive. Where do you live?

No Hydro Store. So can anyone tell me how to mix a 70% to 80% porosity mix. What's in Pro-mix HP? Things I have and can get. Vermiculite, Perelite , Peat Moss, Potting Soil. I don't need to mix an organic mix because, I feeding my on nutes.

Amuse us here at ICmag with what country/state you're in and maybe we can help you locate a hydro store near you. If you're wanting to " mix up" a soil that has no nutritional value then why even bother? why not just use something like hydrokorals?

I've been growing hydro for 2 years. I'm going to try the 420 grow pots(feed from bottom). Anyways The only Hydro Store was 2 1/2 hours away and it is now closed.

Just trying to help you out bro. I surf the web a lot and I'm always finding businesses that I never knew existed.

The problem you may have mixing your own is going to be the PH of your mix.

Give us an idea as to where you are and maybe we can find something for you

Here is a mix in tempted to use. Why? Because its what I have on hand.

1 part black gold potting mix
1 part Fox farm original planting mix
1 part Fox farm ocean forest
1 part large chunky perlite

Was only going to use a compost tea once a week(the mix is sold by KIS and I have purchased there upgraded compost tea brewer).

My watering method is a vague area for me and am considering 2.5ml/gal Dutch master root zone conditioner along with Flora nova bloom at 1/2 tsp per gal. This mix would be brought down to 5.6-5.8 pH from my municipals 7.6 tap water. I would use this mix from veg through flower.


I'm sure there are a lot of opinions and am open to all. The response to this I am hoping will guide me through to a good harvest.

My lights are HGl's SOL series and I am using air pots.

You could buy a bale of peat moss, a large bag of regular perlite, powdered dolomitic limestone. Mix peat with 25-30% perlite, dolomite 2 Tbls/gal of mix. It's about as basic as it gets. About the same as Sunshine and ProMix. No nutes in the mix, except the Ca, Mg, and a bit of trace in the dolomite. I like reg. perlite rather than big chunky because there's more surface area and the air that perlite holds is more evenly distributed. The dreaded WalMart may carry ProMix. Good luck. -granger
