Taio, Gray Wolf has posted this info earlier:

"A 250F final purge removes the monoterpenes and loses that "fresh" smell and taste, but still produces good resin. It won't produce shatter, because 250F partially decarboxylates it. We get shatter reliably at 115F and -29.5"F, which tastes and smells exactly like what it was extracted from. "

For the butane purge, I keep the temp around 110-115F. I use an electric skillet with the butane container in water set to 110-115. (If I understand correctly, the low temp helps preserve the terpenes and thus the great smell and taste). I don't let it go too long, maybe 1-2 hours. I then stir up the oil to remove most of the bubbles. Then I add the Everclear and stir it up some more until the butane looks to be dissolved. I can see the wax starting to separate at this point. I winterize the alcohol solution for 24-48 hours. After filtering the solution, I do a long, low temp purge of the alcohol solution, 2 days on a seedling heat mat (probably around 80F). I am very happy with this tek because it produces great quality smoke reliably. It took me a few time to get it right, but now I think I have it dialed in. Too bad winter's going to be ending soon.

Hi,ive been busy the last couple days with work so i forgot to login here and post he latest update but i winterized it and evap the alcohol after 48 hours at 120F and ended up with the oily structure so im happy.
Thank you for taking your time and writing in detail how you do it and why the temps.
GW has posted lots and lots of good information on this forum and ive read a majority of it "i believe" but sometimes i get confused and forget everything ive read hehe.
Thanks again!

Thanks Jump & others

Thanks Jump & others

Just wrote a long reply only to find it timed out and lost everything.. Anyway, wanted to thank Jump and other on this site as I am total stoned on some great AA I made in the last couple days. I went through the whole process, but long story short, it turned out great!! I started with 7 month old skunkberry that I've had stored in jars. Tasted the flower before drying to make sure I had a good idea of the taste. After making the AA I tried it and was amazed at how smooth it was. But it does taste just like the flower I smoked before drying, which wasn't very good. But I have a bunch of fresh flower from other plants and can't wait to make more. I wrote a lot more earlier ,but just don't feel like writing it all again, so will just post the pic and again convey much appreciation to Jump, GW and all the others for making this thread the STANDARD in making AA!!

anyone without a vacuum chamber.. purging for long periods of time with success?.. so heres a good story for you guys..

i order a vacuum chamber.. it comes in the mail. about 2 weeks ago.. i get a pump from a store near me.. i use the god damn thing 3 times.. and my buddy asks me to borrow it to clean up his bho.. and he would give me a few grams of his oil.. or cash watever i prefer when i come to pick it up.. i was working so i couldnt get there for a few days.. and when i get there.. its a fucking SHIT SHOW..

i get there TODAY... few mornings later.. to grab the thing.. and his GF sold it for drugs.. because he manages there finances she figured if she took something that wasnt his.. he would replace it.. meaning no harm no foul and life would move on..

well i get there he tells me the story.. an im pissed.. and shes there..and shes all.. wats the big deal.. it was a pot with a lid and a pump .... we got into a really heated arguement about respecting others property .. and this bitch says to me dead SERIOUS.. well.. i sold the thing for 50 bucks.. so i dont think we should have to give you anymore then 100 bucks for it.. and i fucking FLIPPED.. pulled up my paypal account.. and showed the reciept for the chamber.. and then my bank statement online.. to show the pump price..

so i left there with my money to get a new fucking system.. but.. we got into an argument on the way out .. when i told him that i was done lending him anything.. no more fronts.. no more ANYTHING .. that i didnt wana talk to him until they get there shit together.. he denies hes using.. but she deff is using..

moral of the story.. offer to clean up the oil next time.. instead of lending NEW equipment to people who are Hiding an Addiction..

so .. as i get home this morning i have about 20-30 grams sitting in a pyrex.. in a hot water bath.. for the last 20 hours.. at 115-125 max.. its looking great.. but in my head.. i was going to grab my chamber and vac.. come home.. finish it up over the next 24-36 hours.. and be good.. have some nice headsmoke i been waiting for .. and NOPE.. im shit out of luck..

i go on ebay to purchase another one.. and i talk to the guy. well hes shipping it out tomaro . hoping it will come monday the latest.. but until then.. i have it up on a shelve with a kind of electric pot filled with water.... should i just Scrape it up.. put it in parchment.. or just keep the shit purging as long as possible then toss it in the chamber when i get it?..

i was talking to a friend who said continue purging.. because once u put on parchment and put away.. you will trap more butane in it? but that doesnt make any sense to me .. but if anyone could help.. id really appreciate it..... gotta sit down . .smoke a joint and relax.. im so angry..

the worst part.. MY GF.. said to me.. why would u lend that new equipment out.. before he picked it up.. now when she gets home from work tonight.. shes going to be all .. I TOLD YOU SO haha.

edit: got some nice ass shatter with an amazing smell and taste with 80 hour water bath.. will post pictures later.

I've learned quite a bit from this thread over the last couple years and I'd like to thank Jump and Gray Wolf for all the time they've invested.

Now to contribute something of my own: my n-butane concrete from tonight and a vacuum-assisted-filter.

Tonight's run was done with grade A Cherry Diesel:
h8E9rAB.jpg

9 grams to be exact. The flowers were broken by hand into pea-size pieces, put in a glass extraction vessel, and pre-frozen for 5 hours. The vessel was covered with tape to prevent frost build up.

The butane has been in the freezer for the past week or so. I bought a 3 pack of Capital n-butane on ebay for $25. It's supposedly more pure but Skunkpharm tests still discovered mystery oil in it. Regardless, it was only marginally more expensive than purchasing canned butane locally.

I picked up some dry ice at a local grocery store (~$1.50/lb) to use as a cooling "bath". Basically, the extraction vessel (an 1800 tequila bottle) was sitting on a layer of crushed dry ice inside a saucepan, which was placed inside a cooler. This kept the flowers at a constant 4˚F (measured w/ IR gun).

I used a vacuum pump to help filter the solution after letting it soak for 45 minutes (vessel was swirled for ~ 30 seconds every 5 minutes). I pre-wet the filter by spraying it with a few ml of fresh, chilled butane. After the liquid butane was pulled through, I squirted a few more ml of fresh butane into the funnel to help reduce loss.

And now a brief digression into the vacuum assisted filter. I call it the ghetto buchner funnel.

It's basically just a bottle with the bottom cut off and epoxied to an acrylic sheet. A small hole was drilled to serve as the vacuum intake.

The filter is a 5 micron polypropylene felt. From Mcmaster-Car: http://www.mcmaster.com/#polypropylene-filters/=s7qnp2

Now back to the run:
After all the butane had evaporated, I brought the pan and pump inside to begin vacuum purging. Total purge time was ~3 hrs. I tried to keep temperatures constant at 115˚ but they ended up fluctuating between 100 and 120˚. I live at ~5000 ft so my vacuum gauge reads about 5" less than sea level. I kept the vacuum gauge around 24"- it's not very precise, but I was aiming for 29.6" in Hg absolute.

My vacuum pump has an isolation valve, so every 10 minutes I would flip that to change the air in the chamber.

Finally got to scraping and ended up 1.78g. I'm sure there's more than that left on the pan, so I'm happy to say I yielded 20%

Nice bro, but it seems to me you're saying you used a standard vacuum pump to filter the initial butane/oil solution, and the general consensus is this is an unacceptable risk factor. A water aspirator for cheap, or a safe pump like a Welsh are practical and safe means to supply the necessary vacuum.

An inexpensive ;-) Welsh,

They've this little baby, doesn't pull a really deep vacuum, but should do the trick for the specific application,

Purdy oil! Hows the aroma, flavor, and effects?

As SH notes, a diaphragm pump or water aspirator would be safer than using a sliding rotary vane pump.

Good to know. This article confirms rotary pumps can be potential ignition sources.

I would rate both aroma and flavor 9/10. Aroma strongly resembles the flowers. Flavor does as well, but there's a more prominent citrus/cherry taste (which I like).

Effects are good. It's a strong sativa but not too racy. Definitely not the best for the night time use though- I tried some dabs of it last night and was up for a couple hours later than usual.

hey everyone, what a fantastic thread this is! i just spent the morning reading all 50 pages. i have some questions, im a bit fuzzy (severely underslept), so forgive me if i looked over some things while reading

when one uses dried buds, how different are the soak times? it seems like the first soak is generally 30 mins, but it seems like most people use fresh materials? i only have access to dry nuggs. also, whats the consensus regarding whole vs broken vs ground dried buds?

for those using ss thermos and thus cannot see the material as it is being soaked, how do you know when you've used enough butane? i find myself slightly worried that the rising summer heat where i am will begin to warm the thermos too quickly once i bring it outside. has anyone found hot temps/humid environments to have a negative effect on the thermos/tane maintaining cold temps?

i have some ss mesh filters. which micron would be better 10 or 25?

how mandatory or how much more effective is the winterization process? i recall jump in the very beginning of this thread saying he noticed no difference between winterized and non, and it seems he started purging off the ethanol immediately after having filtered it.

for some reason i thought i had more questions but cannot think of anymore at the moment. hoping to give this a go tomorrow with a test run of 2.5ish grams.

If you extract at a cold enough temperature, you minimize wax pickup. Winterizing still removes more trace amounts, and the longer you let the waxes crystallize as they freeze over the easier and more you will filter out.

Thanks for the response Soysoz. Apologies to the forum/mods for the sleep-deprived induced questions in my previous post. I found the majority of the answers in this thread, on this forum, and elsewhere :)

has anyone found thermos size to be an issue at all? I just got one today, and it's pretty tall; just a tad above 12 inches with the cap on. I'm just concerned that its height might affect yield, by having more steel for the liquid to get stuck on? I could be overthinking this though.
