Quit Alcohol - Support Thread

One other thought: I found edibles helped immensely with not drinking. Super blissful and extended experience versus the much quicker up and down of smoking. Cannabis has so much more bliss than alcohol and the mind ends up preferring it. At least that was my experience.

if you've stopped drinking there has to be a few extra $$$ around, time to get a hobby, something fulfilling or satisfying. Target shooting w/a .22 or .22 magnum is fun and affordable. Doing something like fly tying or fishing reel repair (depending on location) can be interesting if you're like minded and profitable too. Golf club repair & re-gripping or just learn to play yourself.

It's not good to take an addiction out of anyone's life without replacing it with something else.

Excellent thought Stoner. Ive recently started doing Muay Thai which has been very rewarding and alot of fun, although extremely tough on the body and i find myself sore most days now which kind of blows.

Target shooting / fishing / repairs all sound cool. I used to have some wicked BB guns that i would practice with all the time, need to get some more.

Replacing negative addictions with positive one's is real progress imo. Would like to hear other hobbies people do as well

nice! never even thought about pellet guns for target, excellent idea and very very affordable. the newer technologies have some of those guns shooting @ much higher velocity and also extremely accurate. Sheridan is one manufacturer that was @ the affordable top line price.

try wood carving. 23 years ago a friend from Chicago had moved up here (northern Mn), a rough ass kinda guy finally trying to settle down, he joined a wood carving class and during the 1st class the teacher realized he was a natural. He doesn't buy the pre-carved blanks, he starts off with blocks of basswood and finishes with such detail it dazzles the eyes. His finish paint work is lifelike and most important is the eye-set, flawless. He's truly pro quality but just does it as a hobby.

15 days sober!

15 days sober!

Never felt better. First week was hard as.. something very hard.

Couple cold beers would be SO nice, but i'm not going to drink any. That would be the end of my sobriety once again. Been there done that too many times to f**k this up again.

Keeping my mind strong. :dance013:

Beer or two (or glass of wine) time to time, but no thanks for serious drinking anymore. I think I was not drunk in 2013 even single time, maybe few times just a bit tipsy but not more than that.

There is better ways to go.. :joint:

It will take time to clear away the wreck that was your February. Though old buildings will eventually be replaced by finer ones, the new structures will take years to complete. Sobriety is a journey ...not a destination. Changing your environment won't necessarily change you, change comes from within. That's not to say to hang out at the local pub and things will be just fine but to find positive things in your environment to focus on that will help you reach your goals. I found that going it alone wasn't very successful for me so i sought out group of like minded individuals that wanted the same thing i wanted and would support my efforts. Forgive yourself for the slips and move forward.

peace Joe

High. Thank you Young Trees for starting this back in 2010 and still going. I haven't been drunk in almost 2 years, yet I still enjoy 1 cold beer on occasion. Any more than one and I get a headache, will mess with my golf game etc. Multiple friends dead one way or another( one burned alive in van when passed out with light cig). Lost years of my life and health besides. Been back and forth before, but finally resolved in my mind that I don't like the effect at all and way to many cons. Weed like Panama can make you drunkish and giddy, but no over the top drunk or ill effects etc. Love cannibis and wish all would just smoke and chill out. Someday perhaps. Congrats to all that are still sober. If your not, keep trying and trying till you get it right. Didn't ride a bike instantly and engrained habits are even worse, but with enough resolve you can do it. I used to be a coker too and very thankful to be here today. Old friend used to say Keep on the Grass...
Besides not drinking and just smokin', you still need to work on your thinking as is where the real problem lies. No more stinkin thinkin, mostly what you think of yourself and what others see you as. Need a new image, but not some fake fancy shit the world has, but one of spirituality and finding ones self if you will. Need quite and meditation time every day or old habits creep back quick like. Like the 12 steps and they work, but also met many bad types(including leaders) that help no one but themselves and are liars. People can be a great support, but you got yourself in the hole and now need to dig down and pull yourself out for good without falling in again. Meaning you need to still open your eyes to see what is real and not. I also think that once you finish the 12 steps you should have learned enough to stand on your own and not be so coddled constantly as many make it a life sentence. Very glad you all are here to support each other in this and hope continues for a long time to come. Will surely save lives. Awesome!!!
On a lighter note and also my daily medicine, laughter...
I just got word that Obiscoobiewonkadoobie just landed somewhere and brought some seeds that are out of this world... also said that Obiscoobiewon is looking for some that can be trusted to grow this special 50 ft wonder with gold dusted trichs dripping everywhere and when the light hits it just right it could blind you. Heard thru friend that was used in cave scene on Dagaboh when Luke see's Darth Vader. Him and Yoda supposedly puffed right before the scene. :tiphat: SR

Whoah! thank you Payaso. That was unpleasant and hope I wasn't viewed as an instigator. I may be in other threads but this is kind of a sacred no BS subject for me.

Im also glad for the quick cleanup Payaso!

Pinkus many people saw what you were trying to do...kept your head on your shoulders too...K+

It's nice to have this thread where people can come for support without any judgement. I always feel for the person who is trying to get it together and reading their experiences helps my resolve never to never again pick up that first drink.

Smoke um if you have um...Hope this was another good day for those in the battle

Thanks Payaso!

I was contemplating starting a new similar thread if this one remained closed. I don't have to struggle daily anymore with booze, though I would say it took me 3 or more years of continuous consecutive days before I didn't think about it daily.

I'm not here to brag about it or hold it above anyone having trouble. I'm just showing up to show others it is possible to quit.

This isn't AA ~ though I have been there and am about to attempt to take the good parts of it and use them as I interpret them. So i'll tell a brief part of my "story".

I come from two long lines of drinkers. The first beer I remember drinking was at an Elks club picnic. I believe I was 4-5. My father and friends thought I was hilarious; it was a moment that greatly influenced my behavior from then on. I was drinking daily by 13. I received my first DWI (DUI to many) at 16. I had my fourth by 21. I quit, hopefully for good, 25 years ago last month.

Yeah, I just hit a few highlights there. The weeping wailing and gnashing of teeth did go along with all that fun.

BTW, AA can be really helpful if you let it be. As they say, take the parts that help you and leave the rest.

Good luck peeps! And just don't drink, for now. ;)

*** I am very glad as well to see this thread back alive. Smoking herb is by far the best drug for so many aliments, mine being ptsd and asthma and helps tremendously with both and no ill side effects. I do think one needs to find inner peace as smoking alone will not fill the inner void, just helps with the weak ass flesh, but very thankful for it. I remember my dad giving me and my younger brother when under 10 yrs old a beer to split in the back of the bar and no one cared. Try that with a joint and see what happens. Hard to see so many so blind to the facts and even then so many don't even care about nothing but there pocketbook anyway. Not like that, never will be, even if rich and would never even own a new car. Waste of money. Now building a house would be costly as used to build them and are crap what many live in compared to older structures that have lasted hundreds of years. Remember older cars when they were made out of real metal. Shit my big ass idiot friend jumped on my old plymouth fury hood and not a dent. 318 by the way. Miss that boat. Smokin' with Jack tonight and very good smoke by the way. Peace to all of you on your journey to sobriety or whatever will bring you peace. For me my higher power is God through the grace given by his son. Hope all find truth and Love as is what all want deep down no matter how tough they act. Seen the toughest of the toughest on there knees broken in tears and yet find hope and strength to carry on. I will say this; Never give up trying even if you slip, get right back up and quit being a baby and time to grow up and be a real man, make amends where you can etc etc. I say like Nike says; Just DO IT and quit making excuses. I have been through hell and back and more than a couple friends dead alcohol related and almost myself(even waking up in hospitals) when younger and dumber. To all you young guys. Fuck everybody right now unless they are there to support you and learn to love yourself as many times no else gave a shit in my case but mostly I didn't care cause I listened to stinkin thoughts from myself and others. You first for the next few years, then maybe a girlfriend and a life, but too soon and you get all caught up again in (her) or life etc. Focus on just you period. Work your ass off and be something YOU can be proud of. People criticize me still and have no clue how far I have come. Battle for your mind really and I want mine and my thoughts to be that of a man of peace though Classic could tell you some rants I had at the old place, but I do have ptsd and shouldn't be trying to make a point so early in the morning when I have nightmares/bad dreams most nights and still after over a decade later still have drug dreams as was in deep once. Wow I'm still writing, but hope helps someone and glad some people care about helping save lives which I believe this thread has already probably done and hope will continue to do. All the best. Peace... :tiphat: SR
