Laying in the firestone rubber liner (pond or roofing lining) for a moisture barrier. I unfortunately don't have enough to do the entire crawl space but I have plenty of normal moisture barrier plastic sheeting for that.

test fitting the pillars again and checking the level. I end up putting a pretty good angle to the floor, not dangerous or anything. But I needed to ensure that the water drains both away from the house and into the drains that lead to the sump.

I may be holding off on my full plans for a thin waterproofed floor (i.e. not a shower drain approach) due to cost of the larger project... I'll prep for it but prolly have to do tiles later.

Test fitting the sump after I chopped it. I ended up spending tons of time to get this part right but I was very concerned about the floor drains and how plumbing would work. I want it to keep water only where I want the water to be..... You'll see.

Oh ya, almost forgot. the mistake thing... Tell ya what I will wait a day or two and see if anyone can guess or even gives two shits

I leveled the blocks and then put in the 2x4 joists and started hanging cross members with the metal hangers before I had finished insultating the floor (!)

I didn't feel like pulling it apart and starting over so I stopped midway on the cross members, had to make many more sacrificial cuts in the insulation materials in order to get them under the joists, etc... kinda made that part harder than it needed to be...

Ok I make mistakes, but then you're too scared to venture a guess.

back to the build!

Here you can see the rubber strips stapled to the joists & cross members on top of Reflectix that I put down and taped the seams.
I'm no scientologist but the addition of 4 or 5 strips of pond liner rubber was quite effective in my tests. I don't know how to quantify it only that I noticed a distinct reduction and change in the tone of the plywood between using rubber and not using it. So having the material already on hand made it a no brainer.
Seriously added to the work effort though. However, it is satisfying when I screw down the ply to the joists and that rubber compresses and just seals that edge tightly, sound and air are not easily getting past the joints. multiple layers of overlapping ply (so as to hide the previous seam) and green glue and roxul safe 'n sound, and reflectix, and tape... well I hope it is worth it in the end cause its cost me alot of time & effort to decide on insulation & soundproofing techniques. research sound proofing some, like growing plants, its not magic but just a matter of selecting the principles and techniques you wish to apply. Unlike plants, I don't get to build this room again... So once and done and no regrets.

Those tabs hanging down behind the 2x10 joist were spacers I put in to make up a 1/2" gap. I let them hang down in case I could use them later, then when I didn't I just cut 'em off with my sawsall. fyi sawsall's are freaking awesome tools. I love my porter cable sawsall and that is all I'm saying ya'll.

edit: I think that was 25lbs of screws and I'm out already. Need to run to the Home Despot and grab some more Roxul & screws & alum tape today.

The white stuff is acoustic sealant. just like mud you apply it anywhere there is a potential hole or place for air to leak. Helps prep the surface to ensure it is nice and flat so when you apply the Green Glue it flattens out into a thin membrane. The Green Glue never really fully hardens out. Its purpose and function is to take sound and convert it to a small amount of heat - thus changing the sound to heat and stopping it from passing through. My other techniques are to leave an air gap between walls so as to reduce the poss for transmission into the structure of my house. This is the old room within a room approach which is very very effective. Check out those modular music rooms that colleges etc.. buy and use. They are not perfect but do a good job of permitting many musicians to share a practice area space and be able to concentrate on ones own thing...

Also notice that I have R30 & R38 fibreglass insulation stuffed everywhere.. I had to break out some fibreglass that I intended to return for refund but it just got too foooookin cold and I busted open the bags and hand shoved it everywhere. Helped to allow the place to finally get into the '60s.

December electric bill was astronomical... War Department; not happy.

This board is only partially done with GG. I put 3 contractor tubes per 4x8 sheet of 3/4 ply. This is the "Best" treatment although its more common to just use 2 tubes per 4x8. The shit is expensive at about $175 for box of 12 contractor tubes of it. ya get 4 qty of 4x8 sheets with that, not many tbh.

You can't see my marks but I randomly dribble or squirt the GG up to about 2" from the edge of where the ply will go. Then I put down the piece of ply and screw it in. Takes about 10 days for the GG to fully get as hard as it is ever going to get (and it never gets rigid but stays soft and spongy kind of) and for it to get to its maximum sound absorbency.

See where I planned on cutting the hole? Before I committed, I rigged it up outside (during a
rare warm day) and did a mock testing of the levels. The test showed I needed to raise the
heigth of the inlets... so back to digging out for a deeper sump. Glad I waited and did a
mock up and test run prior to cutting the hole!!!

Had I not taken the time to mock and test, you can see that I would not have had the best result. Some of the water would have been left in the drain pipe run and that is not good. I want the water to drain into the sump and then, whoooosh up and out baby, smell ya later. The standing water level left needs to be minimal.

Anyways, take the time to think things through. But always back that up by testing important components etc... effen a buddy, now is when you want to fix that shit. not later when it is all buttoned up and causes you to lie contorted on your back, barely able to lift your hands anymore because they've tired out before your fix is done being fixed... swearing and cussing trying to fix something while your plants suffer... I'll pass if I can

see how much I decided to raise the hole... glad I did both testing of the system in isolation as well as
test fits... I really bogged down during the plumbing phase here. was researching bottom drains and different
waterproofing systems and technologies... fun researching i learned alot about shower drains...

see that little spot of water in the pic above? here I was testing a cap ful of water to check my drain levels.
both inlets performed great. since this is such short run and I paid attention... I'm not
going to spend time pressure testing that run. hopefully I won't regret

Look carefully and notice the white pvc drain lines during mock up. Looks awesome, almost like I know what I'm doing....

There! Did you see it???? ah yah, The pictures don't match. Look at how I moved the second drain line in the main FR...

The first piece of PVC I welded was a WRONG piece. So after all that careful measuring and mock up. My first weld was a fuck up! ha!
No worries mate, I made do on the fly and it was fine, maybe a better position than even my mock up. But boy did I pay attention after
that!

During the build I decided to put the veggie closet under the floor, thus creating the "ledge". My idea is to have a trap door that can be lifted out to create a larger FR if I want. Or I can put a dome on it, etc.. most likely it will just stay a veggie closet. Its currently about 27" high and 18"x 60" or so long. I removed all but one of the ganged 2x10 joist sections you'll notice. So on the front lip there is now only 2 2x10's versus 4 layers of 2x10's. I brace and use metal hangers everywhere.

The entire floor substructure will be rock solid like me and my morning tent pole proudly making its presence known.

Taking a quick break tonight to medicate and listen to Beck's Sea Change. This album is a classic. Not sure why more people don't know about it tbh. He made it after breaking up a long term relationship I understand. The whole album is beautiful sadness.

But... I'm happy tonight! sitting on top of the ledge! fully framed out the floor to the structural members I created by ganging 2x10's with metal hangers and 1/2 inch bolts. The floor is rock solid both on the bottom of the FR and on top of the Ledge. Nice to be starting to turn the corner on this project... nearly killed myself with infection from it already... hehhe my elbows ain't touching wood yet mother fuckers! keep yer grubby hands OFF my shit!! hehe I can see the brother in law swooping in for the kill... my guitar and amp collection.. But, nah, that shit aint happening cause my first born Number 1 Son is getting it all. He can play 'em all 100x better than Dad and that doesn't bother me at all. I'm all grin's when we play. He can have whatever is left of them by the time I check for the last gig.

Hey Dman! Thanks. I've been wearing vans since my '83 when I met my buddy Conan the Barbarian in language school in Monterey CA. My buddy was a surfer from Huntington Beach who taught me about punk and vans. Those were the days bro.

Anyway I've got two pairs. The black set and a checkered pair. These are what enable my homegrown style of snackered joist dancing I was so fond of.... Lol I do have to pay attention when I wear them near nails but they have helped me stay sure footed when I may have slipped otherwise.

The room is coming along. Getting close to laying the floor. Insulating and sealing it up shut. Taping w alum tape and tons of roxul safe 'n sound insulation. Boxing in the joists w furring straps and luan now. Loving the results so far man.

Gotta have some fun while I'm at this. But also McKush has to get out every once and a while and this is where he does it right now. The guy behind McKush works in a highly professional field where the likes of McKush do not do well. Lots of professional cock sucking, working with others can be a drag. Worry over getting work for the employees to do is a drag. Worry over the employees doing the work well once you get it (ah yeah, you are way ahead of me already) yep thats a drag too... hehe I love it though, as crazy as it makes me. Building things with software is nearly as much fun as building with wood.
