Marijuana No More Dangerous than Alcohol - Obama

In an interview with the New Yorker Magazine, Obama said he believes marijuana to be no more dangerous than alcohol but he has discouraged his daughters from using it.

“As has been well documented, I smoked pot as a kid, and I view it as a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big chunk of my adult life. I don’t think it is more dangerous than alcohol," Obama told Remnick.

When asked if he believes marijuana is less harmful than alcohol, Obama said it is less damaging "in terms of its impact on the individual consumer."

"It’s not something I encourage, and I’ve told my daughters I think it’s a bad idea, a waste of time, not very healthy," he added.
Note he calls it a "bad habit and a vice," not a crime. :)

Obama went on to say:
We should not be locking up kids or individual users for long stretches of jail time when some of the folks who are writing those laws have probably done the same thing,

Well, let's see Obama put his signature where his mouth is.

Then he can put a joint where his mouth is, legally.

Maybe he's getting ready to sign some new executive order about MJ, and he's getting ppl ready for it!

At least take it off schedule I !!!

So like if you gather healthy snacks in front of you and take a few bong hits, that equals better health.

I would like to think his eldest daughter re-introduced him to it, and exchanged what they thought about Catcher in the Rye and innocence, and that in a sense, the new generation is a lot less innocent than us, yet it seems they are more adult at dealing with it than we are.

I guess it could be considered a vice or habit, but coffee is, and it helps people to be productive.....

...So does weed in the way of stress. How does one deal with stress and make decisions? Gets rid of the stress, and makes decisions...

Read between the lines people. He basicaly endorsed it in the safest way possible for him. He cant just say hey im the prez and i like weed. Thats the wet dream of every repub media outlet. It would turn in to, " prez encourages little children to get high!" I have my issues with the prez, and like Skip want him to get this on the right track. Sched 1 is a joke. A really bad one. This country has a long way to go before its really ready for Freedom, and Social Justice. Look at how hard it was for people to accept Universal Healthcare, wich has been accepted, recocognised, and implemented by the rest of the civilized world.

what a forked tongue snake in the grass. He's all for the weed, as long as it's polling well. In the meantime, the DEA keeps on doing what it's doing--imprisoning people and ruining lives. Too little, too late. We need to throw these pieces of shit out on the street, head first.

Thinking of it as a vice is better than thinking it's a crime that deserves prison time. This sounds like a small step forward. Even if it's not much. At some point people who think it's a vice will be on our side in the legalization movement. I don't expect Obama to make any changes in the next couple years, but legalization will happen at some point.

Weird - ground yourself. You are measured in thought, now we need you calm enough to explain bullshit to the proles and lay-people.

I think he means to say it's way better, and that extra things we call "vices" don't do anything for society.

He is wrong, because it's a common myth that it doesn't motivate you, or you become amotivational.

A vice is your anti-anxiety medication becoming addictive, or state-sponsored gambling, or packs of cigarettes stamped with your state on it, or alcohol taxes, or you like your pain meds too much.

Those things are horrible. When is there an anxiety balance in relation to benzo's? They depopulate your coping receptors, leaving you dependent on them! Then pain meds are bad too. Doesn't matter if you're responsible.

Me? I smoke to get motivated. No kidding I will hit a bong, clean, play video games, will actually tolerate people.

It's all in my will power to not get really high before driving, or using it when I feel sad, or using it to escape.

What is escape? Reality TV, video games, a book, workoholic, cleaning non-stop, paying attention to everything around you. Now the TV news show tells you it's an "escape" like you're some kind of pussy.

All those things are escapes from oneself, and all things can stop happiness or bring it - it depends on the balance.

But what we really do, is to escape our mind's silence, because we're afraid of that.

We are afraid of ourselves - many times the beast in your dream, are you latent violent frustrated emotions, and the way you cope is to say these feelings are not yours and you disembody them, and it only appears an aggressor in your dreams.

They could also say it makes you dumb, but for me that padding, that dumbness allows me to think. My thoughts are so fast - they rush like ocean waves and crash together if they happen too fast. but flow past each other when they aren't so rushed.

I agree with Weird.

how can you claim Cannabis is a vice when in fact it is medicine?

you can make a medicine a vice, or a hobby, or sex, or sport.

if we follow Obama's logic on the issue, everything is a vice.

he also says: "We should not be locking up kids or individual users for long stretches of jail time"

so locking them up for shorter periods of time is ok?

I don't get this vague demagogic...
