Surf goes vert

I've been thinking about trying vert for a pretty long time now, I think its literally been on my to do list since I started growing about 5 years  Well now I have 3 flower rooms at my disposal and one of my 400 reflectors has kinda crapped out on me so I have decided to just wire the socket and go vert :woohoo::dance013:

The cab is 31"x35"x~47" based on the tick DIY, just need to cut the vent holes, put weather stripping, install a lock and it's all done.

I grow in my own homemade soil mixes with compost/sprout/botanical teas and some select products like aloe, fulpower, tm7 and agisil(silica). For this room I have 4 10 gallon smart pots of 3 different soil mixes that consist of:
Mix1-
8 gallon peat
4 gallon EWC
4 gallon Grow stones
808g oyster shell
808g SRP
808g Kelp
180g DE
12cups basalt

Mix2&3-
5.6 gallons peat
5.6 gallons EWC
4.8 gallons grow rocks

Cut in half and amended with:
1/2 cup kelp
1/2 cup neem
1/2 cup crab
1/2 cup alfalfa
1 cup oyster shell
6 cups basalt
.5cup gypsum

and:
1 cup kelp
1 cup neem
1 cup crab
1 cup alfalfa
2 cup oyster shell
6 cups basalt
.5cup gypsum

I have 4 clones of 2 different phenos for a total of 8 for each pot, whichever set of 4 roots first goes into the mix. They've been going for 1 1/2 weeks now and no roots yet but they are still healthy, cloning is my weak spot at this point haha very very weak. I'm hoping to use my bashful pheno of The white s1 as it's the most stable and produces a nice big plant of rock hard tasty buds.

I'm thinking I'm gonna hang the light in the room and have a honeywell fan in the middle of the pots blowing air up with a 4" fan extracting air out the top, 6in intake from under the house at bottom of room. I think a vscrog would probably be my best bet in this room, wondering if I can achieve the same results as vscrog with careful training and stakes?

Hopefully this thing should be up and running in the next 2 weeks so stay posted, feel free to leave any criticisms or advice till then :)

thanks AD! Can't wait to get some plants in this room, just wish I could clone right  I'm gonna try taking another batch today. Seriously thinking about biting the bullet and making a diy ezcloner cus the dome+rapid rooters hates me. I'm gonna try using a little chlorine this round see if that makes a diff.

Plan looks good, interested to see you do this! Good luck and welcome to vertville

As for the cloner; DONT DO IT!
(My opinion)

Many people have a ton of success using cloners... I think there are too many variables to control.

Water temp, ph, ppm, cycle timed feeds..Then you gotta worry about keeping the water sterile, and yea....Anyways, What I'm saying is you need alot more equipment to get it done right.

I used to have a shit load of issues when cloning. Best results for me;

Get one of the 70 site cloning trays, and the holder for it, along with the dome. Fill the tray w/ washed coco, so that its firm, but not hard..sponge consistency.

Take your clones (I take entire lower branches if I can so i can have nice tall, healthy clones). IME, bigger clones = better. The branch already has a nice healthy thick stem, might as well take advantage of it, even if its at the expense of a day or two rooting time.

Remove excess foliage from the branch, and cut the stem again underwater @ 45* angle to the length that you want it. Then, scar the ends where you will be dipping in clonex.. I just do like 5 vertical lines down the stem, rotating the plant so i can quickly get 5 small slits, about 1'' long.

Then, take a screwdriver, pen, dabber, something, and instead of dipping the stem in clonex, rub some on the pen and lightly brush it against the stem where you made the scars, and along the 45* angle cut. Less is more with the clonex IME.

Then, put in Coco, place in the dome, and Pour PH 5.5-5.6 TAP water in the bottom tray underneath the clone tray. Cover with dome, and put under a weak light (T12, T8). Keep the Coco moist..I found that you need to add about 8-12oz of water every 3-4 days unless you're using a heating pad. In that case, set the heating pad under a thick folded up towel (1.5'' + thickness) to only allow a little bit of heat through the towel.

You wanna open the dome for a few minutes each day to let the clones breathe, but other than that, just wait. You'll get roots. Guaranfuckingtee it

Anyways, I'll be watching. :tiphat:

Or, Rapid Rooters. Same process as above, but instead of using the hole in the middle that it comes with, use a toothpick or something to make your own hole next to the big hole. About 1.25'' deep. Both can be transplanted into soil easily

Welcome to our village!

Rapid Rooters were crap in my past experience. I tried poking a second hole, flipping them upside down. I learn to hate them real quick. Ever since I went into straight coco, in small clear inside red cups, my success rate went to 100%... Only down side is I can only fit 18 per tray. But for my purposes, its enough.

I have also, because they were a free gift, recently tryed New Botanicare Coco Gro plugs, and they worked well, with a 95% success rate. I blame that on myself. I really did like them and if I used plugs would switch to them anyday, but for me coco cups is the only way to gro.

Also I use clonex.

Thanks guys! I just recut the clones I already as as they were kinda big and tried adding a drop of chlorox per 2gal of water per advice in another thread. Also used some clonex which I hadn't been doing. We'll see what happens, I'm out of rapid rooters and have coco so I'l definitely give it a shot if these don't root and for future rounds :)

I'd rep you if I could dab :)

Clones are a funny bitch..

I thought I had them nailed with a touch of understanding and was getting great results 70%-80% with As Freds calls it..
80 F + 80 Rh and moist not wet media...Be it coco or rock wool...

Then I read Med-Man is a no hood clone dude with excellent results and I go and toss (from) carefully prepped clones to ripped off the plant and plugged into a KP full of CC with Ec floods around 1.2 every 90 minutes... No hoods... Damn near 90% rates... Seems the easier I make it...The easier it gets.... Humm.... D9 gets 100% rooting in his dialed environment....

My clones have made it thru RH ranging from 80% to 45%-Direct air and minimum air flow.... All kinds of variables...

Been trying to understand and process and what Im seeing when i find myself with a little free time... lol

One thing I've noticed without the hood are the much stronger main stems down low... None of the mush I ran into under hood...

That and good luck getting pm without a hood...

There's a million ways to clone a plant... Find what works for you and stick to it.... I found cloning to be as hard as I let it be...
2 Cents...AD....

Edit... Ya got me thinking on it... OH NOOO....haha

Just wanted to add I find the top 3 branch sets to be the best spots for clones as far as vigor...
4"-8" cuts do better than any other size for me... Leaving only the top couple leaves and placing as much stem in media as I can.
Cuts under 4" die off from mushy stems and those over 8'' as well as bottom cuts yet take a lot longer to get going...
The big ones always make it but get over taken by the smaller ones come VEG...

This seems to be the case over in the pools as well...
The only clones I've lost were small and the bigger clones took twice as long to shoot new leaves...

Noticed this the other day flipping through my threads...
Which I don't suggest doing for anyone with a life...
My shows packed full of distractions... lol
What...?...

Puff,puff,pass....AD...

welcome to vertville! I'm a lurker, but I'll pipe up if I can help some way. cloning can be difficult at times no matter what method you use...I suggest trying several techniques until you find what works for you....I always take 3-4 xs the number you need so you can pick the best out of many and compost the rest. I've had best luck with rapid rooters/ root riot plugs. coco works too. good luck

Yo dog that sounds like so much fun. Knights of the Glob Table.

I went up to blackhawk like 6 months ago and won $1300 at hold em in 5 hours. Got there late, played all night. Walked out at 7am with cash, completely in the stoned zone. All the drunks up there are easy ;)

Come out to Denver, Unfortunately I dont have a spare bedroom for ya! I do have a helluva sectional couch tho.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH thats funny. Bet you dont have a spare for me either =D

Haha lets cruise to denver Dawg, We'll sleep under the plants Dabs  I'll bring my guitar, snowboard and enough dankity dank to play holdum  You guys crack me up too funny

Should be finishing the room this week, the cuts I had that I re-cut and used a drop of bleach and rooting gel on still look good but we'll see in the next couple days. The bleach/rooting gel did revive one clone that was basically dead and is now healthy.

So I never thought this would happen but two "sneezy" clones rooted and one "bashful", I think the others are gonna root any day too. I think the recut with added cloning gel was the biggest help, I wasn't getting roots like I'm seeing now when I wasn't using it. I was totally suprised when I actually saw roots hahahaha.

So I finished off the room basically 95%, hung the light, put bug filter in, put layer of lava rocks on floor for aeration for added SIP benefit if I want to use it. Got the soil resting in there now, gave it a test run to see where temps were at, ~80 with my fan at 75% and no circulation fans I'm happy with that I kinda fucked up on my ducting by not making it long enough but it shouldn't matter to much  Just need weather stripping and the fan and I'm all set, maybe another lock too.

Gonna transplant tomorrow most likely, hoping another "bashful" roots by then so I can do 1 of each in the YS mix and CC mix
