Totem: Gert's 1st Vert!

Hi All,

I decided to try a vert, mainly egged on by the fanatical devotion that vert growers show for their style!

I am only doing a very small test grow, in a tiny secondary tent, so I'm not too worried if I fuck it up. Also this lets me try out a few parameters, and test some limits.

I decided to rig the setup as a "totem pole", and to place the plants around it. I am using a tiny tent (80cm×80cm×160cm). The totem pole is made up of a 5" carbon filter, on which rests a 5" Ruck, on which rests a 5" cooltube. Unfortunately my outlet is only 4" as the small tent only has small holes. Around this I have placed 8 plants in 5 litre pots. Four different strains too - crazy. A lot, I know, but what the hell, let's try it anyway!

Here's the rig (first version):

Anyways, the plants are now at just over 20 days of flowering, everything looks good, the plants are much greener than they'd usually be (I assume due to being so much closer to the light) and the temps are fine. The light is an old beat-up 400W HPS, by the way.

Here is a pic at 18 days:
(I have removed the first row of plants from the tent, for the sake of visibility)

If there is one thing that I have noticed, it's that the plants seem to be stretching much less than I expected. OK, I haven't done any of the strains before, so I'm not 100% sure, but I really get this sense that the light coming at them horizontally, rather than from above, has curtailed the stretchiness. Any comments on this?

So far, I am optimistic!

Cool looking device ..your losing lumens with the cool tube, but if it helps with temp control or getting plants closer do it..

welcome to vertville! he's right about the cool tubes... I'm currently running 1600watts in a4x4 and with a small muffin fan beneath the lights on low gently blowing the heat up to the fan/ filter combo the temps are good. you'll be surprised at how easy it is to keep bare bulbs cool. good luckand holler if you need help... the vert crew is tight and we are always down to help each other out.

Thanks guys!

Yeah, I know about the cool tube and the lumens :(
However, the space is so small that there is no other option, really.

Anyway, we'll see how this one goes, so far it's promising, and when I scale it up I'll try and have a bare glass setup :)

a few suggestions: check out the threads by mr.d and bobble heads old vert threads as well, there is a treasure trove of useful info from both those guys and those threads are peppered with invaluable wisdom by dhf.... anything he says you should write down or memorize because it's truth.

Looks good Gert.

The plants could probably come up a bit. They seem low in your pic.

The lack of stretch is probably strain related. My plants have stretched as normal in front of a vert bulb.

That space is definitely not to small to go bare bulb. I've done it with great results.

Here's my 1st vert from way back when.....

Hey there Marlo!

Very well observed. I'd been anticipating more stretch. As it was, I lowered the light by half a foot or so (removed the long white neck) and I think it's much better now.

OK. Come to think of it, maybe I over-pruned them when taking clones.

Many thanks for that. Nice to compare another 80 grow.

I see what you mean about the light, too. I may try it next time, although in my current version of the universe lumens are cheap, it's space that's dead expensive. LOL.
I also need to spray in there once in a while, will need to be very careful. (Or just up the lamp to 600, hah)

Really good section this vert one, BTW, quality support, man!
