So we have a couple of coffee threads running in the Den lately and I figured I'd add one more.

The latest rage in coffee & coffee makers recently are the Keurig & Nescafe Dolce-Gusto pressurized espresso type machines. Both build pressures (15 bars) equal to professional coffee shop espresso makers used in the industry.

Both have an assortment of coffee blends suited to most anyone's tastes; everything from morning blends of regular java to espresso's, lattes, cappuccinos, hot cocoa's and even assorted tea blends.

Keurig seems to have the market cornered on name brand selections such as Caribou, Green Mountain, Swiss Miss, Newman's Own and many others.

Nescafe Dolce-Gusto offerings are limited to their own corporate branding which include Nesquick Cocoa & Nestea tea blends.

And finally both sell machines ranging in price from $70 ~ $300 dependent on style & included features.

So I'm interested in what your choice of makers might be (the poll) and why (answer in thread), even if you don't own one you might be familiar with them via a friend or family members machine.

I remember looking into making my coffee using these type machines, it was a few years ago though and I don't remember exactly what I discovered. Have you looked at any online reviews such as comsumer reports to see if there is a difference in the quality of the brew they dispense? I have a subscription to CR, I'll go see what I can find....

CR had the DeLonghi Nescafé Dolce Gusto Genio EDG455T rated as the highest in that particular "type" of coffee making machines with a score of 77. All the categories they consider were rate at "very good" to "excellent", except for the taste category which was rated as "good." Price range on this model was $60 to $150, so it pays to shop around with this one. The top 4 in the CR ratings were of the DeLonghi Nescafé Dolce variety, with the top 3 being rated as "best buys."

The Keurig with the highest rating was the Keurig VUE V500, which placed 6th in the CR ratings, and has a score of 66, and is priced at $170. It was also mostly rated at "very good" to "excellent," except for taste which was rated "good" and first cup speed which was also rated as only "good." This Keurig did rate higher than all others in the "convenience" category, it was rated "excellent," seems that every machine tested CR topped out at either "very good" or lower for convenience.

There are a few more Keurig models, the next highest rated was the Keurig Vue V700, placed at #13 in the ratings, with a rating of 59 and a price tag of $250.

Hope that helps S4L.

Make some proper coffee, not these ridiculous overpriced cartridge systems. They're shite.

Espresso machine, or one that does the frothy milk too, so you can make lattes and cappuchinos is the only type of cpoffee machine to grace my house.

Having said that I slurp freeze dried Nescafe instant.
Maybe you should build a vacuum coffee system like the breaking bad superlab had.

instant coffee is only good if ya add vodka and a drop of vanilla. no fancy machine here, altho i had one like described above once. i even make cowboy coffee sometimes. add a cube\bit of cold water and grounds sink to bottom. a few grounds become fibre for me

had no idea on the CR ratings bro, that is the exact model machine I bought through Amazon, I paid $111.00 but now it shows up @ $122.38 on Amazon.

I chose that model because of the Amazon customer ratings were fairly high (4 out of 5 stars) on it, the machine has not disappointed me in any way except that I wish it had a bigger water reservoir. It warms up in 30 seconds flat & then brews in a hurry.

The flavors are better than 'good' in my estimation and on certain blends I customize my drinks according to my own tastes.

That's sort of odd that the Keurig selections were also only rated as 'good' because there are so many of them.

I got tired of buying a $4 or $5 dollar coffee then tipping another buck every time I went to town, the cost of the machine will soon be absorbed in my savings (haven't bought a coffee in town since December 14th) and the price of appx $1 per Nescafe cup is certainly considered an appreciating asset saving me $4 per cup forever. The Caffe Lungo (the straight espresso blend) is only 50¢ (fiddycent to you hip hops) per cup, I really like my espresso :)

Thanks for sharing that info Dannyboy.......

I've been drinking coffee all my life, and i have lived in different countries. Coffee ain't sweet. I tried a miriad kinds and brands, none taste like those nespresso. None give that much froth. They look too perfect. I distrust it.
At first most coffeemakers will be fine. Their main troubles, apart from the need of regular inner cleaning, comes from loss of presure. So, i guess the best of them is the one with sturdier pressure bits. Problem is those bits are inside.

I went and looked again at CR, I hadn't actually clicked on the button that brings you to the pricing info, just saw that was the price range. When I did click on the pricing info, I saw that the one priced at $60 was a different machine by Delonghi, may have been a single serve version of your machine...anyway, that $60 dollar machine had a lower rating provided than the reviewed model.

Don't have a clue why the taste ratings were only average...maybe the reviewers were comparing the flavors to stuff made in French Press systems. I worked for Peet's Coffee and Tea for a very short time a while back, and all employees are required to attend (with pay of course) coffee and tea tastings to help you develop your ability to understand how flavors represent themselves and such, really a lot like the wine industry, and now microbrews, and HEY(!)...now cannabis too! I only worked there for about a month, so I didn't get to attend too many classes, but I will say that the average coffee consumer doesn't have their taste buds developed any where near the degree that true afficianados do. Same with all afficianados, with any taste-able product...there are subtleties that never get noticed unless you educate your pallate, and that takes a lot of time and work. Ya gotta REALLY love the shit out of a product to go to that effort.

Me, I'm fine with most any good coffee, I tend to buy a nice strong Italian roast at the supermarket, stick with affordable stuff. When I go to Peets or other businesses that sell a cup, I don't order a particular variety, I just ask 'em for what they have on their rotating pot that they pour from...variety being the spice of life, of course.

the nespresso capsules are half real coffee and half instant nestle coffee... was gifted one of those machines, the simplest one, it was fun the first week, then went back to the 'greca' with illy coffee, yum!

now I want to give the machine to someone who likes it and is willing to buy the capsules.

We had a Tassimo for a while, but it was just a pain in the arse. Hard to clean, bloody expensive pods, and still not as good as a proper latte/cappu/whatever from a coffeehouse. It sprayed super hot water everywhere too. We even had to buy new cups that would fit under the bloody spout:biggrin:

I only really drink coffee when I wake up, used to drink far far too much. I slurp the instant mostly, but sometimes I break the 1 cupcafetierre jug out, or the bigger one when guests want coffee.

I'm saving up for a combo espresso/latte/cappuchino machine. I like my Vanilla Lattes with brown sugar. Yes I know it's girls coffee.

There is a guy in the market in town, with a little coffee trailer running off a genny, and he used to have this awesome coffe flavouring syrup. Orange, Cinnamon, and Vanilla, and it was

It was called "Grannies Snickerdoodle". He used the nearly the whole bottle on me over the course of a few months and has never seen another bottle since.
