It really depends. First, let's get some lab data just incase there is something unique there. I can do that for you, no charge, I owe ya.
Really it has to do with the marketing campaign right? For example, DNA Genetics is starting a CA company, this is big news if you're a fanboy I guess. I uploaded my free sample of one of their pre-releases. As you can see, kick-ass packaging, marketable name (super kush), a feminized OG cross of course. They have a good game plan. It includes giving free seeds to folks who will grow their shit right (vegan organic!) and get it lab tested. They are distributing via the lab so the odds are higher that they will get data back. And that their new work will make it into dispensaries.
You have some folks on this very site who could blow up any genetics you give them, just with their fanboys.
Then you can look at how Subcool does it. He picks a stupid name to test the new line, that way it has to be good to get approval. Then he gets killer pics of his new work. Then he hypes it and releases a limited amount under a clever name. Then it's on to the next big thing.
But it seems you are asking about long term popularity, which will depend on how it grows. It has to yield or folks won't mess with it, that's really why SourD is so popular.
In reality, no one cares where the variety came from, only if it sells and yields. If it sells good enough, then lower yields are acceptable, ie OG kush.
