We used to drive down to a "farmer friend" we knew in Meigs, pick up 5 gallon buckets, lids and all of meigs weed.
Harvest time was always a great season in Ohio. Some really great weed grown there. Just one of many places, great weed is grown.

It's cool to see this thread resurface.
I love the back and forth between peoples showing pride in their region of Ohio but I propose we forget talking about which micro region of Ohio has the best weed and let's just be proud that people ARE producing some top notch herb in Ohio.
Glad you found the Meigs County Gold though... now you've got me interested because I was always under the impression it was the "brand name" of sorts for anything out of Meigs Co. Make sure you come back and show us what she looks like when some space clears out in your room!

This is very true. A friend of mine who's in the "business" has been passing around Lemon G for the last ~2 years that I can remember.
The most recurring herb if you were to snag some in Cbus lately has been Dumpster and Lemon G... I prefer Dumpster as it has some real funk to it which I particularly enjoy, never worked my way back to a cut though

I have lived my entire life growing and smoking in a county bordering meigs. I have NEVER seen any MCG just heard the talk.. Lots of Lemon G, but I like shish99, trainwreck, og kush"tvc", BB x WW, C99, just a few momma I keep..
^I've seen that before many times between parkersburg and athens. The old thai that shows up is real nice too. I think most of those guys got the afgani, thai, colombian, and oaxacan that seem to float around in that area. FWIW the Alma gold from GA is almost impossible to differentiate from the MCG in side by side comparisons.

Many of the networked "old boys" have and share these beans and grow it on the edge of their cow pastures. Athens during Halloween is the best place in the world to be because of this simple fact.
I grew up one county over. The best weed I ever smoked in my life was Meigs County Skunk. Of course, since it was 1985, and I was only in high school, you could combine my youth with the fact that high grade cuts of primo skunk were not very prevalent at the time, I was in love!
The Meigs County "Skunk" that we used to go to Athens for was always guaranteed to be some of the highest quality, manicured nuggets you ever saw in your life. I happened to know several people who were growing. These guys were close knit and shared cuttings and even pounds of herb with each other, trading if you will. Smoking your same stuff all the time got boring. Trust me when I tell you there were in-fucking-credible genetics down there!! These cats were in their 50's and had 13th Generation genetics back then. I bet I had a bit to do with proliferating the legend. Hell I lived it you might say...
In 1985, you could buy an ounce of Meigs County Skunk for $230. Today, the price is more like $400 per ounce if you can find it. The outdoor Meigs County Gold is less, say $200 an ounce around harvest, if you know the right people.
I heard the same stories growing up about the University doing some agricultural studies. Keep one thing in mind. Anywhere that tomatoes flourish, cannabis will too. Some of the most delicious, giant, sweet tomatoes come from the Ohio Valley, near Marietta, Ohio. Same goes for the sweet dank. Marietta is famous for their Tomatoes, as Romney, W.Va. is famous for their peaches, or Meigs County is for their marijuana. It is not a legend. Those old cats in Meigs have had it down to a science way before the Cannabis Cup was thought of.
The nuggets were as sticky as any you have ever seen in your life, they would literally stick to your fingers through a good shaking. When you broke those piney nuggets open, you knew you were in heaven. I saw many a joint of Meigs weed go around the room twice then burn out with half a J left. Everyone is so stoned after only two lung busting hits, they forget to hit the J. After 20 min or so, someone usually realizes to pass the J and it went out and there is still 1/2 J left!
With the modern domestic strains of today, I guarantee you Meigs County Skunk bud can hold its' own against any of them in every category, manicure, smell, stickiness, taste, buzz, everything. It is real.

So the world is a VERY small place, I moved to athens, the county over from meigs, and had quite the encounter at The Skull.
I was sitting at the bar drinking with some old timers and one guy was talking about all of his trips and such. eventually pot came up and i invited him outside for a smoke since you always get the best stories outta the old timers.we smoked a bowl of blue moonshine and he was very impressed with it, i gave him a piece also.
When i gave him the piece he looked at it, (i guess any grower KNOWS what pot looks like before it gets stuffed into a bag for transport... ) smelled it, and said to me
"you know I was the first guy to grow sensimillia on the east coast back in the early 70s? I actually sold pot to david bowie!"
To which I responded
"No"
He went on to say that he lived in meigs in the 70s and that he knew more than a lil something about the meigs gold. Here's the info that he related to me about its origins
It started out as Colombian land-race, the buds would turn red, blue, or gold. The high was fairly strong, and it was tasty, but the buds weren't very large. The Colombian would finish at about 8 to 10 feet tall and the first week of November, which was unusual for a sativa land-race in our climate zone.
He also had some seeds from a Thai land-race, which would grow tall- 12 to 15' with long skinny branches with heavy buds that would turn down from so much weight but never finish maturing in our climate before the frost. He said a joint of it would make you sick to your stomach it was so strong.
The indica influence came from an indian variety, he had tried afghani landrace but thought that it lacked potency. The indica males that he selected in filial generations were always the three fastest to show sex. The first year he let the indica males openly pollenate the columbian and thai varieties, then he started to choose the plants that finished at about 8 feet and the second week of september. He looked for the thai size and potency with columbian flavor and Indian influence on stature and flowering time.
The reason he quit was that there was a sheriff change and he had kids. The old sheriff didn't have a problem with the reefer and told him as long as he didn't hurt anyone that they wouldn't have a problem, no bribe even necessary. New sheriff was cowboy type who hated the reefer and wanted to bust anyone he could. He said that he wanted to see his kids grow up in person and not behind bars so he stopped.

Interesting stuff. I saw this post come up a few years back. Been living in the Athens County area for the last 7ish years. Never came across any Meigs Gold but as many said, plenty of Lemon-G and death/dark-star sometimes. The death/dark-star (heard it go by both names) is way too indica for me though. Instant knockout. Back when I was in school there was all kinds of stuff coming from all over the region... too bad I didn't fully appreciate what I was seeing bein a new head.
Anyway, it's been years since I bought a bag. Out of touch with the student body and few close ties with locals. I keep myself fairly well stocked though

Lots of good discussion here on Meigs county. I went to school in Southern Ohio in the early 90's am familiar with Meigs County and it's product. Spent a good amount of time in and around Athens. Anyone who remembers the Voodoo Birds would know the scene. Those guys used to play after hours shows at our pad and crash out afterwards. Good liquid as well as good herb. I don't think there was a specific strain, because these were all tight knit families growing and trading. I remember around Halloween being able to drive over to a farmers house and you could literally pick your own buds out of a 50 gallon trash bin. No fooling. Devastatingly strong herb compared to most of the Bricked Mexican available at that time. Beautiful Buds, well manicured. Piney, spicey. Narcotic with a slightly trippy edge. I know of Ohio folks a little farther North growing some amazing hybrids. Got to have some indica in there to finish outdoors on time. Corn field grows galore. LB's going for upward of $3000 even in the 90's. Miss those times and that lovely Miegs bud.

Hio meigs county's heyday was mid 80's after that the man came down hard in that area, even in that period it was a mixed batch not one paticular strain tho the gold might have been. Ohio green has allways been better than gold or purple. the best hybreds from up north are are now unstable inbreds and any seeds would be hybred. Cornfields aplenty in hio but they dont produce the best quality weeds. 32 and up for as long as I seen.

Ok so I'm obviously new here to icmag... found it because the other night I was talking to a friend about meigs gold and seen this thread.
Now before I start let me just say I've lived in meigs county for the last 10 or so years... I am 21 years old and I've been smoking pot since about the age of 13.
I am deeply rooted in the pot industry of meigs county and would like to shed some light for people who may be confused about "meigs county gold".
To start off, meigs gold is a dying strain as there become better ones available to us... g13 for instance... meigs gold is a strong skunky indica and unlike what most believe and say... it isn't gold or yellow in color... its actually a bright green and in some years dependent on the weather turns purple when grown in meigs county...
Now meigs gold currently isn't grown pure anymore... its mostly found crossed with Kali mist... very few people have original seeds of the "meigs gold".
Generally if you don't live near meigs county or know someone who does then you haven't smoked it... and 99% chance you don't have seeds...
Meigs gold is a strain of wild weed that was found in Vietnam and brought back during the war...
That's pretty much what I know...
If you have any questions or anything... want proof I'm from meigs or whatever just ask...
Also when I get a chance I'll post a pic of some king tut grown in meigs by one of our many growers =P

Meigs County Gold is alive and well and living in seed form in my freezer. My uncle, now passed away, worked closely with other growers in the area developing the line mid 70's through to the mid-80's. When he passed we found the seed in his stash, labeled 1975-1982, all in different packs based on year.
I took it upon myself to germ some from the pack labeled 1975. Strong lemon smell and flavor, tight growing, heavy weighing bush. But, as expected, potency is what you would find in those years and came nowhere near the quality we have in our bred lines today.
A bred for the od line, she hated being indoors. She wanted the big sky and sun to be truly happy.
