Congrats to everyone in Uruguay. :) The first country to legalize. Hopefully the domino effect will follow through North America too.

Before the new legislation was passed, the consumption of marijuana in Uruguay was not penalized, but the sale and production of the drug was considered a criminal offense.

A number of conditions will govern the sale and production of the drug. Registered Uruguayans over the age of 18 will have the right to buy up to 40 grams of marijuana from pharmacies every month and cultivate a maximum of six plants on their property. The legislation will also allow for the creation of so-called cannabis clubs, composed of up to 45 members who will be able to grow a maximum of 100 plants.

sounds to me very similar to the medical system in the US and in canada...you either grow 6 plants max, or buy from the pharmacy a limit of 40g....i mean its a start...but nothing way over the top....not fully legal imo

This is still a huge win compared to outright prohibition. Uruguay is the first country in decades to legalize the cultivation and sale of marijuana. The laws about plant limits or bud limits will go away with time when people see that legal weed isn't harmful. It's hard to go straight from 100% prohibition to 100% legal with no restrictions.

They are the first country which re-legalised Cannabis on this planet! Thats an important step. But I think Colorado is making it more liberal in january. On the other hand I'm not sure about Cannabis grown by capitalists. We will see. The journey has just begun! :)) Gratulation to all Uruguaierians.

Let's all do our part to make 2013 / 2014 the tipping point in history for legalization. Amazing stuff when you look back 10 years...

Not to mention, politicians somewhere on this planet actually enact legislation with common sense? Holy shit...

while i tend to agree with you...i think if you have 2 choices, buy from pharmacy or grow your own 6 plants....then its not much freedom, i mean if your buying from the pharmacy, that must mean that either the pharmacy is supplied by the government, or by private corporations with private interests, not much different that the drug companies now...

the way i see it colorado is making a much larger step, and is much closer to the model we should be looking for..

:woohoo::woohoo:
for the flowery faux legality for personal grows in washington which the walcb decided personal medical grows will be illegal once more (still).
wave some cash in front those fools and wipe your ass with the poor medical patients who cannot afford or refuse conventional treatment.

perhaps Uraguay will discover that letting peeps grow their own will dilute and erode the taxes garnered. we can hope. i'm pretty sure bigPharma isn't digging it. they gonna hurt.

so legality is not the panacea we envisioned, if they gonna stop peeps from growing their own it just means the company store decided to stock it.

I'd guess the majority of potheads in Uruguay aren't interested in growing their own. Legal weed will be so cheap that they won't have a big incentive to grow. Legalization there is a big win for the average guy who just wants to get high without breaking the law.

I wonder where the number 6 came from. 6 might be enough for personal use for most people if they buy clones every time. Keeping a mother plant means you could only flower 5 at a time. Most growers like to keep multiple mother plants from different strains. If you start from seeds, 6 isn't enough to reliably find a keeper female. If they really have to put limits on personal grows, it would make more sense to limit the number of watts or the size of the grow area.

I prefer the laws in Colorado too. The problem there is the fact that it's still illegal under federal law. It won't always be, of course. It's only a matter of time before the federal prohibition laws are repealed.

Definitely a monumental effort to get it past the senate, and the President sounds like he is for it. Or did the President sign off on it already? I thought it was just the senate. Hate to be cynical but we are talking pot laws.

I think they will be interested in growing their own, and selling their own since foreigners won't be allowed to purchase retail cannabis.
