Snype's RDWC Construction Tutorial For 250 Watts - 7,600 Watts!

Well, sorry to disappoint, but I don't have my pump so no pics of my RDWC yet.

BUT...I did put together a VEG-A system with the 1-1/2" male and female electrical connectors. I used the 1/8" washer that I posted. These parts made up my riser. I then used a CAP 1/2" grommet (I'd imagine any old grommet will do) for my feed line. And then she was done.

I don't get the drain times that you do, Snype, but I am in the less than 3 minutes range. I have to imagine it will do me very well in trying to grow roots vs what I was doing before...which was using the exact same tub as a DWC bucket.

The red cover is covering a big black res I made from a Lowe's tote purchase. I don't have the right timer yet so they are only getting a bit over an hour off time at the moment. Will remedy that soon.

I just have to note how happy I am that I came across all this info. Thanks to Snype and everyone else involved. :thank you::thank you::thank you:

Does the flood and drain system work better for developing roots in veg than regular DWC?

I built a DWC veg-a in a tote similar to paperchaser's.

I works well, but my roots dont look like Snypes. There are fewer but they are a lot longer and "ribbed" (if thats the right word).

You have to start with clones that look like this

yea thats nice:)

i started with jiffys so mine were not that pretty.

Im just transitioning from organics and havent invested or built a cloner yet. Cant keep haulin soil back and forth....to much chance. Been using those sun leaves grow rocks (shale) so i can just throw em outside and make something gravel when im done and pretty the place up. Anyone else use these? I cant find much info on them. Seem really nice.

There is a reason why my Veg-A is Flood and Drain with hanging plants for at least 7 days with a very specific flood time that increases through time. Maybe I talked about it in RDWC Part 1 but I will elaborate further in my future RDWC Part 2, coming in the near future.

Also the media can help make a nice root system. I use Rapid Rooters to start in hydroton 8.5" net bottom pots that hold 1.5 gal each of hydrtoton. Roots like it and grow efficiently. Doubleds mpb buckets can use a lot of hydroton and they can grow 3 lb plants in some of those systems. RRs also put rockwool to shame regarding root development and they are more KISS and effective than many other more complicated methods. These days it's not hydroton but supposedly even more aerating versions from:

Gold Label HydroCorn 45 Liter Bag
PLANT!T Clay Pebbles 45 Liters
Mother Earth Hydropebbles 50 Liter

mjkelly93, what exactly did you order? Im not very familiar with these things.... Is there a part number? Or size?

Sorry i hadnt gotten back to you sooner. I dont have a part number from them but i can tell you exactly whats on the invoice.

Washer 3/16" thickness x 1-7/8"IDx2-1/4"OD Neoprene, BLack 60-70durometer Quantity 250 Price 25.00
UPS Shipping $11.72
Total Due: $36.72

Its reliantrubberco.com. They respond fast and answer the phone when you call.

Overall as a customer id give them a 10/10 no problems whatsoever and price is fantastic.

Id ask about 50 durometer though. I forgot to mention that so i got 60s and they are a little on the hard side. I really had to tighten the nuts with channel locks to prevent leaks. 60s did work fine though after being tightened.

Nice! My new washer is a 50. The older ones that most of you got from me were 60's. The 50's are better. If your washer is close to mine, i will add it to the part list for easy access for you guys.

Yeah these 60s worked fine. I think a 50 would have worked better though. I forgot to ask about the durometer and he just gave me 60s. I guess thats the standard?

Plus the whole .10 a washer is sweet. That was by far the cheapest i was able to find and it was for 250. Some other sites were telling me 3-4 weeks turn around time, for a minimum quantity of a thousand, and they cost .22 a piece. I got em for half the price, a quarter of the quantity, and they were in my hands in less than a week.

Honestly, can't beat that company. It was just incredibly hard to find them. I remember i found them on like page 5 of the google search or something like that.

The guys name was Tim.

These systems keep getting cheaper! Easily under $400 for the 2,000 Watt model with everything included except cages! Thanks for your contribution!

Main assemblies are done. Just have to cut the connector pieces and fit everything up.

Just so I don't confuse those wondering.....My setup is a little wonky due to me using some already available parts laying around the house. One being going with a totally different filter (one which I have no clue if it will work or not so CERTAINLY don't follow my lead on this) that requires me to rework how the system flows and also use different fittings. Just wanted everyone to have the disclaimer. I need to write one in my signature. Something like...CAUTION: you just read the insane rantings of a want to be mad scientist....lol

2 quick other questions...

1: Is there a reason you use a washer on the inside of the bucket? I feel like I might be possibly misinterpreting this.

2: Do you pipe thread tape the 1-1/2" traps before you tighten the nut (in this case a female adapter) inside the bucket?

Thanks for all your help and time.

Maybe it's not needed. It makes me sleep better at night.

Hell no! Not when washers are used"
Thanks for all your help and time.

Answered in bold.

MJkelly, have you got the system and everything up and running ok then?

Snype, not trying to cheap out the system but....

do you think one of those commercial air pump 3's will do the trick in a bind? It says 65-70L a minute.

Reason im asking is i original planned for 6 site, then after purchasing parts, now want to expand to 10-12 so my alita is only good for the six site and kinda strapped for a month or so yet. They are fairly inexpensive and could be kept as a backup once things are back in line.

I have read they are kinda loud compared to an alita and thats where the costs difference comes in. Im not familiar with them at all though so will respect your opinion and bite the bullet if need be. The only other ones i have experience with is the GH one but it doesn't move enough air for sure even though mine is nice and quiet.

Well i just read something about some added heat transfer with those so maybe it isn't a good idea. Being that there is no chiller may not want to make it worse.
