Immersion circulators for temperature controlled water bath

Just ran across this today:
Quite a deal for $200. Could be great for closed loop systems where the operator desires an exact temperature for the recovery chamber to facilitate butane recovery.

Unfortunately it is still pre-order right now. Those of you who are crafty can also build your own immersion circulators for under $100. Just google "diy sous vide"

I plan to use a Ranco ETC, but could use a 'circulator' to go with it.
Any ideas?

I've asked the same question before, but no one seems to know if they are explosion-proof. Since they are designed for wet locations you might assume such, but then again you mount them just like a pilot light...

Other than that they look perfect as they keep deadly accurate temps and forcefully circulate the water for improved heat impulsion. They don't have large heaters though, so you would need to use a large enough fluid reservoir to compensate.

I believe SkyHighler posted his opinion of the Ranco ETC which is that it is nothing more than a simple thermostat. You want a PID for real control, like the Dorkfood DSV if you are using water. Circulation can be achieved with stuff you probably already have laying around like an air pump.

I think the Ranco ETC and Dorkfood DSV are exactly the same unit.

Lol damn except Ranco is half the price. Looks like I might've been ripped off. One difference I can see between the Ranco and the Dorkfood, is that according to their literature, the Ranco can do both heating and cooling. The Dorkfood DSV doesn't include this functionality.

A closer comparison will reveal they're not even physically the same, the buttons are reversed.

For those of ya'll handy with a screwdriver, I picked up a Mypin digital self learning temperature controller for under $30 at http://www.rakuten.com/prod/ta4-rnr...re-control/230517930.html?listingId=213429172

I used a solid state relay that I paid $5 for from http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trk...ys&_nkw=solid+state+relays&_sacat=0&_from=R40

I picked up the Type K thermocouples up locally at Branom Instruments for $21 each, but they are available on line.
Why type K thermocoupler? I am putting together an immersion circulator right now for which I picked up a PT100 thermocouple... $1.32 shipped on ebay woot :D

I got this unit for some holiday dual-duty usage: http://www.williams-sonoma.com/prod...ma&srccode=cii_17588969&cpncode=34-82550575-2

and after a few precautions attempted to see if i could get it to ignite butane fumes - without success. This certainly doesn't constitute a UL listing, but it looks like these immersion circulators might be an interesting appliance for those looking for accurate temperature control throughout the extraction process.

....damn uuuuu. I am here cobbling my immersion circulator from china parts and you have a sweet polyscience.

also, i only got this thing after seeing it in my friend's biotech lab. If its good enough for a lab, its good enough for me :D

It works in my controller and the application.

I think the powerful circulating pump might be the even more important than the heating aspect. In the past I found the bottom of the collection chamber was always much colder than the surrounding water and thermoclines developed that required constant attention. Now everything maintains a uniform temperature - water and stainless steel both.
